The articles within this work first appeared in the Bell's Life in London sporting paper printed weekly between 1824-1852. The chapters cover subjects including sporting months, etiquette and social roles. They give a sense of the challenged faced in the hunting season and what should be done to improve this. Includes 7 coloured plates showing tradition hunting scenes and 43 black and white illustrations reproduced from wood engraving by Henry Alken. These illustrations were created by Henry Alken who is best known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes. Collated complete. Binding of half maroon leather over red boards with 5 raised bands, gilt titles and tooled gilt lines to spine in very good condition with a little rubbing to edges of spine and bottom edge with some loss of leather to bottom tips of boards and a few minor marks to boards. Inside, bar the odd spot of foxing all pages and plates in excellent clean and bright condition, no aging or toning. A lovely copy of this limited edition which famously satirically explored the key characters and archetypes of fox hunting by Surtees, editor, novelist, and sporting writer who William Morris described as "a master of life". It is superbly illustrated by Henry Thomas Alken an English painter and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes.

Surtees's fox-hunting classicmore social satire than manualparades the hunt's stock characters (masters, whips, black coats, bold riders, overdressed neophytes) and the rituals of a great meet, all delivered with dry, observational wit. The book helped cement Surtees's reputation as the comic anatomist of Victorian sporting life. Background: Robert Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. GORDON RAY p.36, said of Alken, "He worked in color aquatint in a style akin to that of Rowlandson and the early George Cruikshank, passing from the broader caricature in his early books to a more sober recording of the passing scene in his later." TOOLEY calls the red cloth a later binding, but notes copies in red do conform to the first issue text.
