In 1777 Samuel Johnson wrote for Shaw the Proposals for Printing by Subscription.an Analysis of the Scotch Celtic Language (see Fleeman 77.3SP). The following year Strahan printed a mere 350 copi…es of the work in quarto, with 182 subscribers taking 296 copies, leaving just 54 for sale. "Shaw's 'Preface' includes several verbal borrowings from Johnson's 'Proposals', and some echoes of Johnson's description of Iona from the Journey [to the Western Islands of Scotland, 1775]" (Fleeman). Shaw credits Johnson on p. xvii: "To the advice and encouragement of Dr. Johnson, the friend of letters and humanity, the public is indebted for these sheets." Fleeman 78.7SA/2a.
