Zustand: Befriedigend. Jonas Hanway (1712-1786) was a British philanthropist and traveller. In 1729, Jonas was apprenticed to a merchant in Lisbon. In 1743, after he had been in business for himself for some time in London, he became a partner with Mr Dingley, a merchant in St Petersburg, and in this way was led to travel in Russia and Persia. Leaving St Petersburg on 10 September 1743, and passing south by Moscow, Tsaritsyn and Astrakhan, he embarked on the Caspian Sea on 22 November and arrived at Astrabad on 18 December. Here his goods were seized by Mohammed Hassan Beg, and it was only after great privations that he reached the camp of Nadir Shah, under whose protection he recovered most (85%) of his property. His return journey was embarrassed by sickness (at Resht), attacks from pirates, and six weeks' quarantine; he only arrived at St Petersburg on 1 January 1745. He again left the Russian capital on 9 July 1750 and travelled through Germany and the Netherlands to England (28 October). The rest of his life was mostly spent in London, where the narrative of his travels (published in 1753) soon made him a man of note, and where he devoted himself to philanthropy and good citizenship. The 'historical account' is by Jonas Hanway, who amongst his many other activities (such as popularising the umbrella) founded the Marine Society in 1756. During the war years of 1756-1763, more than ten thousand men and boys were thus fitted out for duty at sea. From the library of Sir Timothy Waldo (d. 1786), wealthy lawyer and City merchant who purchased Hever Castle in Kent in 1749. According to the list of subscribers Waldo, contributed 30 guineas to the scheme. Offered with a seventh edition of 1829, in contemporary tree calf and gilt anchor device repeated on the spine. Erstausgabe
First Edition. 4 vols in 3, 4to, with 4 frontispieces, 15 plates, and 9 folding maps; half-titles to vols III and IV (all called for), vols III and IV titled The Revolutions of Persia; very occasional light spotting, a few short tears to joints of maps; a very good set in contemporary British speckled calf, spines gilt in compartments with gilt red and green morocco lettering-pieces, board-edges roll-tooled in gilt, edges speckled red; lightly rubbed with a few small scuffs, end-caps a little chipped with short splits to joints; 1780s armorial bookplate of Arthur and Elizabeth Holdsworth, Widdicomb [Widicombe] to upper pastedowns, engraved by Coventry after Baines.First edition of Hanway's narrative of his trade mission to Russia, Persia, and the Caspian Sea. Having joined the Russia Company in 1743, Jonas Hanway (17121786) sailed for Riga in April that year, before travelling on to St Petersburg, Moscow, and Astrakhan in an attempt to re-establish the fragile trade route to Persia via the Caspian Sea. His mission proved unsuccessful: he was robbed by Khyars and later concluded 'that the trade held no great promise, for Persia was too poor and Russia was wholly disinclined to see the expansion of Persian power on its southern frontier' (ODNB). Published after his return to London in 1750, his Account is notable as one of the first European reports of the Caspian region, for its considerable information on the Russian court, where he spent several years, and the German cities visited on his return journey, and for its extensive contemporary history of Persia. The present set bears a striking and unusual contemporary bookplate, with the names of both Arthur Holdsworth (c. 17571787) and his wife, Elizabeth née Holdsworth (c. 17601827). A prominent Devon merchant and ship-owner, Holdsworth served as Governor of Dartmouth Castle from 1777 until his death and as Member of Parliament for Dartmouth from 1780. Edition : Second Edition, Contemporary full calf, rebacked expertly, 5 raised bands in 6 compartments, compartments with gilt floral motifs, red and black morocco labels on two and three respectively., Jonas Hanway (1712-1786) was a merchant and philanthropist. This is the first of several books by this resourceful traveler, best known as the ?pioneer user? of the umbrella (Cox). His trip down the Volga River was fraught with danger, including an armed robbery by bandits in Astrabad (in modern Russia) during a rebellion. He later received 85% in restitution after the rebellion was quelled and the instigator (a rebel governor) put to death. Once he returned to London from his trip in 1750, he filled several public positions, had a street in London named after him, and was posthumously honoured by a monument to him in Westiminster Abbey (Cox). Curiously, Dr. Johnson is said to have harshly rebuked Hanway?s essay criticizing tea-drinking (DNB)., Size : 4to (202mm x 270mm)., Illustrated with 18 plates and 9 fold out maps., Volume : Two Volumes, P.
