On two sides of a four page piece of paper discussing an invitation to visit a Mrs. Falle, who was originally Mary Greene Hubbard Sturgis, the daughter of Russell Sturgis who had made his fortune in the opium trade before joining Barings Bank and later becoming its head. She was one of the American socialites, so called American dollar princesses, who married into the European titled nobility, peerage, or royalty- in this case Although to be fair - or not - Bertram Falle was not a baron when Mary married him, but, according to distant relative, she purchased the title for him in 1934 for £50,000, with what must be assumed "drug money"! Anne de Selincour married the British essayist and journalist, Basil de Sélincourt in 1908. During World War I she and her husband were volunteer workers in hospitals and orphanages in France. Her novels explored the contrast in values between Americans and Europeans. Her best-selling novel Tante was made into a 1919 film, The Impossible Woman, and The Little French Girl into a 1925 film of the same name. In 1931, she was elected to the United States National Institute of Arts and Letters. Four of her books were on the list of bestselling novels in the United States for 1912, 1924, 1927, and 1929 as determined by The New York Times.
