Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - On The Alternation Of Generations: Or The Propagation And Development Of Animals Through Alternate Generations is a scientific book written by Johannes Japetus Smith Steenstrup in 1845. The book explores the phenomenon of alternation of generations, which refers to the process by which certai…n animals reproduce and develop through a series of distinct stages, alternating between sexual and asexual reproduction. Steenstrup's work is based on extensive research and observation of various animal species, including jellyfish, sea anemones, and insects. He presents a detailed analysis of the different stages of the life cycle of these animals, and how they alternate between sexual and asexual reproduction. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a specific animal species and its life cycle. Steenstrup also discusses the implications of alternation of generations for the study of biology and evolution, and how this phenomenon challenges traditional notions of reproduction and development. Overall, On The Alternation Of Generations is a groundbreaking work in the field of biology, and remains an important reference for scientists and researchers studying the complex processes of animal reproduction and development.A Peculiar Form Of Fostering The Young In The Lower Classes Of Animals. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

In den WarenkorbFirst English edition. Publisher's original blue cloth with decorative monogram in gilt to the upper cover and titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with three engraved folding plates. A very good copy, the binding secure with a split to the cloth at the head of the rear joint, cracking to the hinge between pp.…16-17, and some rubbing and marking to the boards. The contents with an engraved armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, a neat previous owner's name in ink to the front endpaper, a water mark to the front pastedown/endpaper, and some spotting to the preliminary pages and engraved plates are otherwise in good order. One of the key works by the Danish biologist and correspondent of Charles Darwin, Johannes Japetus Smith Steenstrup (1813-1897), outlining his theory of the 'alternation of generations'. Through this study, Steenstrup demonstrated "that certain animals produce offspring which never resemble them but which, on the other hand, bring forth progeny which return in form and nature to their grandparents or more distant ancestors". [Garrison and Morton, 217]. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. All items are catalogued by humans. "The second major publication - (the first dealing with geology) - of 1842 was "Om Forplantning og Udvikling gjennem vexlende Generationsrækker.", (the work offered), Steenstrup's comprehensive presentation of the form of reproduction that he called 'alternation of generations', that is, the alternation of asexual and sexual reproduction, or metagenesis. This phenomenon had previously been described by Chamisso, but Steenstrup included a greater number of observations, based on a significantly wider range of subjects, and provided an importent chapter on its meaning. Steenstrup's growing reputation, won him an appointment as professor of zoology at the University of Copenhagen, where he tought from 1846 until 1885."(DSB XII, p. 9).
