Zustand: Very good plus. First edition of this Victorian almanack for children, with lovely illustrations by Kate Greenaway. Kate Greenaway achieved great success in 1878 with her first solo publication UNDER THE WINDOW, and quickly became a household name. This achievement came after years of study at the National Art Training School and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Elizabeth Thompson (later Lady Butler), Edward Burne-Jones, and Walter Crane. Her style, featuring rosy-cheeked children and young adults, captures a romantic and cheerful brand of Victorian childhood nostalgia; she was one of the most well-known illustrators of the Golden Age, and her art adorns everything from books to greeting cards to home decor. The 1884 ALMANACK came in five binding variations. It features a calendar for the year with figures performing seasonally-appropriate duties, much like the labors of the month in a Book of Hours. This is followed by four illustrations of people dressed for the spring, summer, fall, and winter, and two pages of postal information. An attractive little production. 4'' x 3''. Original cloth-backed color pictorial boards. All edges stained green. Dark green endleaves. Illustrated in color throughout. [36] pages. Boards mildly uniformly toned with slight rubbing. Occasional light offsetting of illustrations. Colors vibrant.

[36] pp. The almanac is illustrated by Greenaway with a full page full color frontispiece, full color title page vignette and sixteen full page full color drawings, one for each of the twelve months and one for each of the four seasons; engraved and printed by Edmund Evans; slight darkening and scattered spotting to preliminaries plus a tiny, unobtrusive dark stain, measuring approximately 1/16" x 5/16", at the bottom edge of each page close to the gutter. The condition of the book is VERY GOOD +.

A most charming set of Greenaway's petite publications, beautifully illustrated with her designs and her visions of children and the natural world. Greenaway was one of the most successful illustrators and artists of the Victorian era. Her classic motif of children in eighteenth and early-nineteenth century clothing warmed her audience's hearts, providing an escape to a simpler, dreamier reality. Greenaway formed close professional relationships with other artists of the day like John Ruskin and Randolph Caldecott. Her work remains timeless. The 1883 and 1897 volumes lack their free front endpapers, a slim crack to each board on the 1886 volume, otherwise the almanacks occasionally present light general rubbing and wear to their extremities.
