Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Introduction Model theorists have often joked in recent years that the part of mathemat ical logic known as 'pure model theory' (or stability theory), as opposed to the older and more traditional 'model theory applied to algebra' , turns out to have more and more to do with other subjects ofmathematics and to yield gen uine applications to combinatorial geometry, differential algebra and algebraic geometry. We illustrate this by presenting the very striking application to diophantine geometry due to Ehud Hrushovski: using model theory, he has given the first proof valid in all characteristics of the 'Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields' (The Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields, Journal AMS 9 (1996), 667-690). More recently he has also given a new (model theoretic) proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for semi-abelian varieties over a number field. His proofyields the first effective bound for the cardinality ofthe finite sets involved (The Manin-Mumford conjecture, preprint). There have been previous instances of applications of model theory to alge bra or number theory, but these appl~cations had in common the feature that their proofs used a lot of algebra (or number theory) but only very basic tools and results from the model theory side: compactness, first-order definability, elementary equivalence.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This textbook is a gently-paced, comprehensive introduction to model theory suitable for students of philosophy, linguistics, computer science, or mathematics who specialise in logic. The book assumes no preliminary knowledge of logic or algebra beyond the barest rudiments of set theory. After a thorough discussion of the elements of model theory (languages, structures, morphisms), the reader is led into a study of key model-theoretic properties (quantifier elimination, model-completeness), ideas (types, Morley rank) and classic applications (to groups, vector spaces, algebraically closed and real closed fields). The book also discusses applications of model-theoretic ideas to philosophy and mathematical social science. More than 300 exercises with full solutions are designed to consolidate understanding and build confidence. A set-theoretic appendix covers in detail the theory of ordinal and cardinal numbers needed in the second half of the book.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Recent major advances in model theory include connections between model theory and Diophantine and real analytic geometry, permutation groups, and finite algebras. The present book contains lectures on recent results in algebraic model theory, covering topics from the following areas: geometric model theory, the model theory of analytic structures, permutation groups in model theory, the spectra of countable theories, and the structure of finite algebras. Audience: Graduate students in logic and others wishing to keep abreast of current trends in model theory. The lectures contain sufficient introductory material to be able to grasp the recent results presented.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume comprises selected contributions by the participants of the second 'Functor Categories, Model Theory, Algebraic Analysis and Constructive Methods' conference, which took place at the University of Almería, Spain, in July 2022.The conference was devoted to several seemingly unrelated fields: functor categories, model theory of modules, algebraic analysis (including linear control systems), and constructive category theory, to mention just a few. The fact that these fields are actually related is a very recent realization. The connections between these disciplines are changing in real time, and the goal of this volume is to provide an initial reference point for this emerging interdisciplinary field.Besides research articles, the volume includes two extended lectures: one on constructive methods in algebraic analysis and the other on the functorial approach to algebraic systems theory. Hence, in addition to its interestfor researchers, the volume will also be an invaluable resource for newcomers.
