Hardcover. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: On Alexander's Track to the Indus by Aurel Stein is a gripping personal narrative of his 19051906 expedition tracing the route of Alexander the Great through the rugged terrain of the North-West Frontier of India (now Pakistan). Blending historical inquiry with adventurous travel, Stein investigates ancient sites, inscriptions, and local traditions to map Alexander's path toward the Indus River. The book combines meticulous archaeological observations with vivid descriptions of the landscape, people, and challenges faced during the journey. It serves as both a scholarly exploration of classical history and an engaging travel memoir, revealing Stein's deep passion for uncovering the ancient past. About The Author: Aurel Stein (18621943) was a Hungarian-British archaeologist renowned for his pioneering explorations in Central and South Asia. His major works include Kalha?a's R?jatara?gi??, a translation and study of Kashmir's historical chronicle, and Ancient Khotan, a detailed archaeological report on Silk Road sites. In Sand-Buried Ruins of Khotan and Ruins of Desert Cathay, he vividly describes his excavations of long-lost Buddhist cities. Innermost Asia and On Alexander's Track to the Indus further document his extensive travels through remote regions. Stein combined archaeology, philology, and geography, contributing profoundly to the understanding of ancient Asian civilizations and Silk Road cultures. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Hungarian-born archaeologist Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943) is probably best remembered today for his explorations in Chinese Turkestan, and especially his discovery of the Buddhist treasure of Dunhuang, described in his earlier works, Sand-Buried Ruins of Khotan and Ruins of Desert Cathay (also reissued in this series). Stein was equally interested in the territory north-west of the North-West Frontier, and in this highly illustrated 1929 work he describes an expedition to survey the route of Alexander the Great's invasion of India in 326 BCE. Having long been intrigued by 'that comparatively small area to the west of the Indus which Alexander's march of conquest towards India for a brief span of time illuminates as it were with the light of a meteor', and by archaeological remains showing a blend of Hellenistic and Buddhist art, Stein offers a fascinating account of an ancient clash of civilisations.
