Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Documentation and testimony from Da Corte's 2020 reinvention of a classic 1960s happeningIn early March 2020, on the cusp of the COVID-19 shutdown, an audience gathered to witness a reinvention of Allan Kaprow's happening, Chicken, by Philadelphia-based artist Alex Da Corte (born 1980). Performed at the site of Kaprow's original--the Gershman Y at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia--Da Corte's first live performance reimagined Kaprow's chaotic event, which had been orchestrated in 1962 under the auspices of the first Pop art exhibition on the East Coast. While the focus of activity for the performers of Kaprow's Chicken involved the hawking of live and boiled chickens and their eggs, Da Corte's performers frantically peddled exquisite yellow orbs made from a variety of materials that represented the moon.Including sketches and reproductions of the objects and costumes constructed for Da Corte's revision, as well as performance images, scripts, essays and personal accounts reflecting on the event's impact and significance over the ensuing year, this publication becomes a living document of a moment in time.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Drawing on pop-culture archetypes and commercial materials, Da Corte's foam, shampoo and glass paintings receive their first dedicated museum survey and publicationPublished with Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Merging modernist color theory and Postminimalist spatial experiments with the crowded, beautiful trash-scape of contemporary culture, Alex Da Corte (born 1980) addresses sexuality, invisible labor, taste, power and desire. While most previous showcases have focused on Da Corte's installations, The Whale is the first exhibition to survey his rich and eccentric relationship with painting over the past decade. As is to be expected with his irreverent approach, Da Corte paints with both traditional and unconventional materials. His Shampoo Paintings are created with drugstore hair products, while his Puffy Paintings consist of upholstered neoprene. Other works include his reverse paintings on glass, most commonly used in celluloid animation and commercial sign-making. Many of these paintings are published in book form for the first time, accompanied by Da Corte's 'Voice Memos' that elucidate his creative process.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'A great and unlikely success story, Da Corte creates funny and therapeutic works in the hope of easing the 'exquisite pain' of modern life.' -New York TimesThis comprehensive monograph celebrates the acclaimed Philadelphia-based installation artist Alex Da Corte (born 1980), famed for his show-stopping 2021 Roof Garden Commission for the Met, As Long as the Sun Lasts. Da Corte's Day-Glo works are distinctly rooted in traditional American arts and culture--tellingly, as a teenager he planned to become an animator for Disney--and the artist himself often appears in his films, impersonating iconic figures such as Popeye, the Statue of Liberty, Fred Rogers or Eminem. Throughout, the pop flavor of Da Corte's aesthetics is mixed with a satirical existentialism: his works often combine sadness and effortless play, connecting our sense of self with consumer culture--from the films we watch to the objects we buy, give and throw away.Published for a major retrospective at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and documenting all of his major works to date, Alex Da Corte: Mr. Remember matches the artist's high-production, ultra-chromatic sensibility in its gorgeous production, with a three-color cloth binding, silver foil on the cover, a paperback volume sewn into the book and an abundance of riotous color throughout, with more than 100 pages of installation views from previous exhibitions.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Unpacking the popular culture, fine art and Americana references at the heart of Da Corte's Rubber Pencil Devil, on the occasion of his new Glenstone commissionThis volume accompanies Venezuelan American artist Alex Da Corte's (born 1980) ambitious 2025 presentation at Glenstone Museum. It marks the first installation of Rubber Pencil Devil (Hell House) (2022), a 17-foot-tall neon-covered house commissioned by Glenstone that holds Da Corte's groundbreaking video work Rubber Pencil Devil (2018), originally presented at the 57th Carnegie International. At nearly three hours long, the video is composed of 57 vignettes that reflect on the concept of 'America' through uncanny, tender and at times violent scenes. Including previously unpublished archival documents alongside comprehensive new photographs of costumes, props and installations, this volume marks the first in-depth study of Rubber Pencil Devil. Ingrid Schaffner and David Getsy expand upon Da Corte's artistic trajectory over the past two decades, while author Simon Wu uses the artwork as a point of creative departure for an original piece of fiction.…
