In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 84 folio album bound in soft green morocco, gilt title to front cover, blank pages coloured pink, pale green, lemon, pale brown with watercolour-painting quality paper sheets interspersed. The book belonged to Miss Hilda King to whom it was presented on Feb 24th 1913 by her friends on the eve of her departure for Teheran where she worked as a governess/nurse. Already a published author of , children's stories (for the Family Herald, October 1911-a copy tipped-in) her identity is confirmed by her entry for a crochet competition which links her to the Indo European Telegraph Company, then a rival to the Anglo-Indian telegraph service and a surviving company from the infamous Reuter Concession of the 1880's, later to become Cable and Wireless. Many of the autograph messages are farewells and in Tehran she received tokens of affection from European families. Amongst these are three competent paintings of flowers by daughters of Gazala Bey, Jeanne, Isabelle and Victoria Gazala, dated 1914 who may appear in a copy of a photograph of Hilda and her charges. Gazala Bey Abd al Ahad Suleiman Dominique (1854 -1929) was a Catholic Ottoman Turk born in Baghdad who trained at the Faculty of Medicine in the Sorbonne and became Responsible Doctor for the Health Service at the Imperial Court of Persia, Medical Officer at the Turkish Embassy in Teheran, Health and Sanitary Inspector in the Capital of Libya, Member of the Constitutional Assembly in Iraq and Principal Deputy for the Province of Basrah. Other inscriptions by Leroy van Gertruyden, H.M. Abrahamian (writing in Armenian), S.C. Basil, Sateriq Abrahamian (writing in Persian). Usual paintings, portraits and numorous illustration stypical of the period. Hilda King left Tehran in April 1915 (?)-last entry dated 1920. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".

In den WarenkorbHard Cover. Folio album of photographs, newspaper clippings and ephemera relating to Mayor of Harrogate J. H. Newsome's life and specifically his year in office, as compiled by himself. With 57 original monochrome press photographs, mainly approximately 16 cm x 12 cm mounted two to a leaf, rectos only, some with printed captions; 36 items of ephemera including menus, programmes, invitations and official cards relating to events in Harrogate and district during the term of office and 26 newspaper clippings of varying size. A unique and detailed record of Mayor of Harrogate John Henry Newsome's year in Mayoral office from November 1933-34 together with other significant personal ephemera. An active member of the 1911 Starbeck Strike (which is depicted on a postcard photograph in the album), Newsome's election was controversial with a number of councillors abstaining from the vote in protest at the election of a socialist, which is referred to in some of the newspaper clippings in the album; Newsome was Harrogate's first socialist Mayor. The collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the social history and civic functions of a major provincial town during the inter-war period, and a comprehensive record of life in office. Of particular note to historians of the town are a photograph of the opening of the Harrogate Art Gallery in 1930 showing the Earl of Harewood making his speech, ephemera relating to the opening of the new Sun Colonnade in Valley Gardens in 1933 and the brochure for the Jubilee of the Incorporation of the Borough Thanksgiving Service; historians of the county will be interested in the official greetings cards from a number of other Yorkshire civic worthies. Full black morocco with gilt titles to spine and upper board. Also laid-in are 4 large photographs: one pair of matching images approximately 21 cm x 16 cm, mounted on card depicting respectively Mrs Newsome, and Mr & Mrs Newsome; image of the 1933 15th Anniversary of Armistice Celebrations approximately 37 cm x 28 cm; large image approximately 30 cm x 25 cm depicting six ladies in civic regalia with trophies. Additionally, a matching pair of studio portrait photographs mounted on stiff card approximately 25 cm x 28 cm, depicting the Mayor and the Mayoress with pencilled caption to reverse of each, housed in a brown envelope. Also included is a boxed solid silver armorial watch fob enamelled in red, white and blue, engraved to reverse " Coun. John Henry Newsome J.P. Mayor of Harrogate 1933-34". Album covers scuffed with wear to corners and front joint just starting; a little scattered light foxing to contents, mainly to mount leaves, and loose Armistice Celebration photograph nicked & creased to edge. Very good condition overall, including the watch fob. A unique record of the civil life of Harrogate during the inter-war years. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Folio measuring 11.5" x 10". 68pp. Contemporary black binder with ephemera from the 1850s-1950s. Tiny tears and chips thus near fine with fine photographs. A scrapbook detailing the Stanger and Russell family tree from Gloucester County New Jersey written by Nina Russell Knight in the 1950s. Contains 105 silver gelatin photographs in black and white or color photographs measuring between 6" x 3.75" to 3.5" x 3.5", as well as various ephemera such as news articles, genealogy trees, and invitations. The scrapbook was created by Nina Russell Knight with photographs and ephemera from the 1850s through the 1950s detailing her family lineage from Gloucester County, New Jersey. On the front page a small embroidery design by Emily Stanger is featured with her sister Harriet's calligraphy. Harriet and her sister were born in 1825 and several pictures feature them and their parents. There is a small genealogy tree laid in for the Stanger family going on to the fifth generation however, it ends at the second generation for Harriet's family. A small article is laid in about Solomon H. Stanger who in 1779 purchased 200 acres of land in Gloucester County and started glass making in the town that is now known as Glassboro. Though the connection is not written in the scrapbook, Solomon H. Stanger is the uncle of Harriet and Susie Stanger who also grew up in Gloucester County. Other paper ephemera include invitations to baby showers and academic awards for various children from the family. Many of the photographs feature different family members by generation. Most of the photographs also include the negatives. One color picture shows a 100 year old wooden cradle handmade by Jacob Stanger with a small blonde doll sitting inside. Another picture features Harriet Stanger at 81 years old with a warm smile unusual to that time frame. There are quite a few pictures on Nina Knight's parents and her home which was built by her father. Several photos show the extended family of Nina and her sister Susie, their parents, cousin's, and children. Nina was born in 1888 in New Jersey. She set up her family's 15th annual reunion in 1959 and was in charge of the historical notes and pictures for the family tree. Nina was married to Aaron Knight but did not have any children. Nina passed away in 1961 after finishing what she could of her family's scrapbook and was buried in Tansboro, New Jersey. An interesting look on the extensive family tree created by a young woman for her extended family living in New Jersey from 1850-1950.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Quarto. 12" x 9.75". Full leather 14-ring binder, stamped in gilt. 24 mylar sleeved leaves with 34 photographs (14 in color, the rest black and white) and 23 items of ephemera inserted on both sides. An additional 3 color photos, and five duplicates of one of the 8"x10" photos laid in. 16 of the photos (all black and white) measure 8" x 10", the rest around 3.25" x 5". Album near fine with bottom corner of joints just starting to crack; contents generally fine. Crown Estates was meant to be a subdivision in Rialto, California offering homes, "of top quality . . . completely equipped and engineered to make day-by-day living less tedious." Its builder, Ron Epstein, planned the site near the intersection of Meridian Avenue and 6th Street. Although a newspaper puff piece implied the building of 40 homes, we're not sure Epstein was able to accomplish anything more than a couple of models. The album offered here documents his marketing efforts. Epstein took out full-page newspaper ads in August, 1959 and also conducted a promotion where the crowns used by the Miss Universe, Miss U.S.A., and Miss America pageants respectively were displayed in the sales office which also served as the model home. Several examples of the print advertising as well as images of the crowns and models are included. Other photos include interior and exterior shots of model homes. The staged internal shots show couples enjoying dinner and a child sitting in the living room with her father. There are three photos of artist renderings of homes along with floor plans. The marketing made a big deal of "The ManorVac", a built-in vacuum cleaner, and several of the larger photos feature a model amazed at the modern wonder of a cleaning machine attached to her home. Ephemera consists mostly of newspaper advertisements but also includes four copies of a double sided company flier and four copies of a brochure. An interesting look at an imaginitive real estate promotion in California at the end of the 1950s, which seems to rely laregely on the ease of vacuuming!

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 172 x 120mm; pp. [8, index], [129 numbered leaves, filled] rear endpapers used. A revealing volume of newspaper cuttings, mainly from 1906 8, put together by Edward G. Spencer-Churchill, Winston's cousin and an aspiring politician himself. At this early point there are close parallels between the two men's careers. Spencer-Churchill was studying all the major 1906 General Election issues, which were also Winston's concerns at the time - Chinese labour in the colonies, and education reform at home. Some of the clippings are of Spencer-Churchill's own published letters to newspapers, but he also records the activities of his more famous cousin, at one point noting in manuscript 'Winston in H of C' alongside a clipping. There is some pencil highlighting to the clippings, and the volume ends with a series of typed and manuscript pages concerning tariffs and investments - including a signed letter from an employee of the Tariff Commission. Tariff reform was the major issue within the Conservative Party in the period leading up to the 1906 General Election. Good condition: binding a little shaken; cover with partially removed label.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Oblong quarto, [50] pages of contents, comprising approximately 180 items mounted neatly on thick card album leaves. Cloth stained and a little worn; a few leaves partially detached from their cloth hinges; the contents are in very good condition. Richard Swan enlisted in Melbourne on 12 August 1915. He was on active duty in France for the duration of the war, and embarked on HMAT A36 'Boonah' on 20 April 1919. John Swan enlisted in Melbourne on 5 July 1915; he spent most of his years overseas in London. The album appears to have been compiled by their mother Edith. The contents are quite a miscellany, and they include three vintage photographs of Gallipoli; 'Anzac Poems and the Landing at Gaba Tepe. By Returned Soldiers' (a 16-page booklet published in Melbourne in 1918); 25 photographs of military interest (including signed portraits); 17 snapshots of London; a 1917 Christmas card from the '3rd L H F. Amb. Palestine'; and a processed letter from the National Service Bureau, 1 November 1917, thanking a family member 'for volunteering your services in connection with the industrial trouble recently experienced' (the Australian General Strike of 1917) . Approximately 70 snapshots depict the Swans enjoying post-war life with family and friends. At the end of the album are eight letters or telegrams and a handful of newspaper cuttings relating to Richard Swan's return voyage to Australia (confusion reigned). Not last, but definitely not least is a duplicate typescript of 'The Day', the anti-war poem by Henry Chappell, first published on 22 August 1914.

In den WarenkorbA delightful Jazz Age scrapbook that doubles as liber amicorum and guest book, assembled by the pianist and singer Anny Gloss, recording, in part, her career with the Ninon Fleuron Jazz Ladies, opening a window into the experiences of European women in jazz during the music's formative years. The first set of newspaper clippings record that in 1928 Gloss was teamed with the American "Jazz Queen" Elsie Teele at the "charming and elegant" Viennese bar, the Bonbonnière (with Teele billed as "the female Whiteman" - she gave the Austrian premier of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in 1927). Much of the album is then devoted to Gloss's experiences at Hotel Radetzky in Hinterbrühl, Lower Austria, where she performed as part of the Ninon Fleuron Jazz Ladies. At the time, the other members of the band were the eponymous Ninon Fleuron (drums, pseudonym of Rosa Sophie Radio, 1899-1974), Mariska Gerö (violin), and Gretl Heller (piano). One advert mentions them "Singing the Latest American Song-hits", while a newspaper clipping praises their "rendering of classical music". The album contains numerous messages (sometimes addressed to her directly) from friends, audience members, and well-wishers. While most of these are in German, some are in English ("Your music makes me feel 10 years younger"). The Ninon Fleuron Jazz Ladies (which had various personnel) came to an abrupt end with Hitler's invasion of Austria in 1938. Gloss also performed under the name Anni Hölzl, as demonstrated by the cast list for a 1931 performance of Der Kärntner Totentanz and the programme for a concert in which she had a soprano solo (1933). Octavo (241 x 190 mm), ff. 60 (final 20 ff. blank). Contents generally on rectos only, numerous items of ephemera pasted in, including c.20 newspaper clippings, 15 original silver gelatin photographs (of which two are signed by Ninon Fleuron), messages and autographs in various hands, one watercolour sketch of the Karlskirche, Vienna, one concert programme loosely enclosed. Original patterned cloth covers, light orange endpapers. Binding just slightly shaken otherwise in excellent condition.

In den Warenkorbmanuscript titles ('The Abdication of Edward VIII'; 'The Coronation of King George VI.'; 'The War') and manuscript commentary, mostly captions but with some longer passages, all in the hand of Antoinette Brett (née Heckscher), Viscountess Esher (see below), a few later clippings, including relating to VE Day, pp. [80], large folio, quarter white cloth with patterned cloth sides, printed label (blank) to upper board, some minor soiling but in very good condition. An absorbing documentary of turbulent times, the fact of it being largely formed of newspaper clippings available to any belying a significant detail of its provenance: the album was formed by Antoinette Brett, née Heckscher, daughter of the German-born American capitalist August Heckscher and the wife of Oliver Brett, the 3rd Viscount Esher. Not only does her background suggest a possible additional aspect of interest to the Anglo-American union a much less happy version of her own but there is a tangible proximity to events that is represented both in her commentary, which supplements the printed gossip with that of her own circle ('Lord Wigram told O. [i.e., Oliver, her husband]', etc.), and in the presence of such ephemera as the notice to Peers of the forthcoming 'Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VIII' (with her caption: 'The Coronation that never took place'), and both the invitation (addressed to 'Right Trusty and Wellbeloved Cousin' and signed 'Norfolk' on the King's behalf) and the ticket of admission for the Viscount and his wife to attend the eventual 'Coronation of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth' at Westminster Abbey this last faced with the photographic portrait of the Eshers in their robes. Even were it simply the work of an outsider, this would be a wonderful feat of compilation, richly illustrated and with a broad survey opinion including her own but the inside perspective that enters at relevant junctures elevates it beyond everyday examples. Oliver Brett's father, Lord Esher, had been a confidant and adviser to Edward VII and retained his proximity to the royal family during the reign of George V. The fact of Churchill being referred to as 'Winston' in her captions both in the Abdication section ('Winston, fishing in troubled waters') and during the War ('Some of Winston's perorations') is more likely a token of true familiarity rather than false (see, 'Boris'). The quality of the work continues into the section on the War, where her interest in poetry is manifest in the various examples gathered to accompany the accounts of reporters; she notes the entry 'at last' of America into the War and includes a typed copy of an extract from the Duke of Norfolk's account of the Sinking of the Bismarck.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good overall. A photograph album commemorating the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910, along with the family's photographs of a trip to Japan. The exhibition took place at White City, London in Great Britain from 14 May 1910 to 29 October 1910. It was the largest international exposition that the Empire of Japan had ever participated in and was driven by a desire of Japan to develop a more favorable public image in Great Britain. The album opens with a shipboard printed telegram, "The Tenyo Maru Wireless Telegram" dated May 8, 1910, announcing that King Edward had died on May 6th and the English were mourning and in a state of confusion. As such, the opening of the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition was "postponed for about one week. The banquet of Prince Asaka is also postponed." There follows a series of hand painted photographs approx. 6 x 2.5". There are colored postcards, art postcards, and approximately 30 b&w photographs of the family on their visit to Japan. The album also includes invitations, 3 watercolor views, a menu, calling cards from Lady Semon and family, place cards for Mr. & Mrs. Rutherfurd (possibly the owners of the album). Mr. Rutherfurd is a massively tall and heavy fellow, especially alongside the Japanese. Hildesheimer, Raphael Tuck & Sons, etc. In addition to the printed material are 6 pieces of original art, including three pith paintings of birds with fringed edges, and three painted cards, also featuring birds, including one with a miniature printed calendar affixed. Two of the pith paintings have toned, possibly from the adhesive, and one of the card paintings has some paper residue affixed to it. One painted card is signed Knarr. While the name on the ownership label appears to be Chinese the material in the album is is for the most part Anglo. The pith illustrations indicate some Chinese influence, and two cards include a Chinese word alongside the English greeting, but that's it for Chinese material.
