Augustine was reacting against other, already established views of history-views that differed from his own. To understand the full measure of Augustines own peculiar genius, and the full significance of what he was trying to say, we must know the viewpoints he was rejecting, two of them in particular. On the one hand there were the conservative, pessimistic theories of the classical Roman historian Sallust; on the other, was the liberal, rationalistic optimism of the church historian Eusebius and other such Eastern representatives of the Constan-tinian settlement and the Hellenistic view of man. The issue at stake was the basic shape of history. Did it run downhill or uphill? Had Rome sunk into a decline and fall from some past era of virtue and inner strength, as Sallust claimed?
