Zustand: New. The influence of development aid on the foreign policy implementation of middle power countries has not been widely studied in the existing academic literature. In addition, states' perceived prestige, as an added indicator to measure a country's middle power status, has not been explored in the literature. As such, this study attempts to academically contribute to the existing literature by investigating how development aid affects the foreign policy of a middle power country in its relationship with the aid receiving country. Through both primary and secondary empirical data collected, the theoretical framework was studied by applying Türkiye's development and cooperation agency, TIKA's, influence on Turkish foreign policy on Somalia and Bosnia and Herzegovina between 2002 and 2018 as a case study. This case study was precisely selected as Türkiye has been a rising middle power state since the early 2000s and the use of development aid as foreign policy instrument has been considered one of the key successes in establishing a prestigious presence worldwide. Ultimately, this book attempts to answer the following theoretical questions: a) What is a middle power country? b) How does prestige contribute to the middle power status of a country? And, c) Do state development agencies positively or negatively affect middle power countries' foreign policies? Editors: Translator: 174 pages.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A twentieth-century innovation, foreign aid has become a familiar and even expected element in international relations. But scholars and government officials continue to debate why countries provide it: some claim that it is primarily a tool of diplomacy, some argue that it is largely intended to support development in poor countries, and still others point out its myriad newer uses. Carol Lancaster effectively puts this dispute to rest here by providing the most comprehensive answer yet to the question of why governments give foreign aid. She argues that because of domestic politics in aid-giving countries, it has always been--and will continue to be--used to achieve a mixture of different goals. Drawing on her expertise in both comparative politics and international relations and on her experience as a former public official, Lancaster provides five in-depth case studies--the United States, Japan, France, Germany, and Denmark--that demonstrate how domestic politics and international pressures combine to shape how and why donor governments give aid. In doing so, she explores the impact on foreign aid of political institutions, interest groups, and the ways governments organize their giving. Her findings provide essential insight for scholars of international relations and comparative politics, as well as anyone involved with foreign aid or foreign policy.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This edited collection draws upon interdisciplinary research to explore new dimensions in the politics of image and aid. While development communication and public diplomacy are established research fields, there is little scholarship that seeks to understand how the two areas relate to one another. However, international development doctrine in the US, UK and elsewhere increasingly suggests that they are integrated-or at the very least should be-at the level of national strategy. This timely volume considers a variety of cases in diverse regions, drawing upon a combination of theoretical and conceptual lenses that combine a focus on both aid and image. The result is a text that seeks to establish a new body of knowledge on how contemporary debates into public diplomacy, soft power and the national image are fundamentally changing not just the communication of aid, but its wider strategies, modalities and practices.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Knowledge Diplomacy and African Higher Education explores the emergent and dynamic global model of the aid-driven, research-intensive African university as a potential panacea for national and economic development in rapidly shifting contexts. Anchored in the concept of knowledge diplomacy, the book interrogates the logics and practices that shape development agencies' interventions, revealing how emergent forms of aid, research and doctoral education are being institutionalised within African higher education systems.Based on a study of Swedish aid-driven research co-operation and empirical data from interviews with staff and students from universities in Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi and Ethiopia, this is the first comprehensive analysis to move beyond deterministic colonial, neo-colonial and neo-liberal explanations of university transformation in offering a more nuanced account of how African universities are being reinvented - from predominantly teaching-oriented institutions into research-driven, globally engaged universities - through the agentic moral and intellectual leadership of African scholars themselves. This highly original book challenges readers to re-examine comfortable assumptions about the promises and paralysis of foreign aid-driven research co-operation and its articulation with development in African higher education. This book will appeal to scholars of comparative and international education, higher education, development practitioners, diplomats and policymakers engaged in strengthening science systems and international research collaboration.
