Combining tree and food crops with animals to meet human needs is an ancient strategy of farmers in Asia and other parts of the world. But modern scientists are rather like the character in Molieres play who discovers he speaks prose they have assigned to such traditional practices a classification scheme some systematic measures and a name agro forestry and are apt to feel they have opened a new field. Nevertheless scientists and developers are challenged to solve a range of problems that reflect complex and interrelated biophysical and socioeconomic factors in order to improve on and promote new variations of this ancient strategy. This book provides theoretical and applied perspectives from political science anthropology economics and sociology to help identify and apply modern practices and technologies that are appropriate to the means needs and skills of Asian farmers. It identifies the kinds of knowledge and experience that are useful for resolving observed problems rather than for achieving political balance between competing disciplines. Readers will have an overview of the kinds of agro forestry problems that the social sciences can address and of available substantive findings that can contribute to agro forestry practice and education. This overview provides a solid introduction to how systematic social knowledge when applied to agro forestry activities can be a powerful aid to basic problem solution in research planning management and policy. 188 pp.

The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of Environmental Sciences, Geoecology, Agroforestry, Geography, Geoarcheology and Geotourism. The Mediterranean Basin, Middle East and surrounding regions are ecologically unique due to large differences in climatic, geographical, and geological features, which grant countries of these regions with significant socio-economic potentials in terms of fertile agricultural lands, rich natural resources, and the existence of strategic resources such as crude oil and natural gas. However, the valuation of ecosystem functions, goods and services of natural and cultural heritages and bioressources of these regions is still little known. This volume offers an overview of the latest information and ideas on the physical environment of these regions, assessment and monitoring of natural bioressources including flora and fauna, and the use of cutting-edge methods for the development of sustainable agricultural systems. It gives also new socio-economic insights on geotourism and archaeology.Main topics include:1. Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Agrisilvicultural Systems2. Environmental Impacts and Restoration Ecology of Natural and Agricultural Habitats3. Investigations and Applications in Environmental Biotechnology4. Spatiotemporal Patterns of Marine Biodiversity and Terrestrial Paleobiodiversity5. Socio-economics of Geotourism and Archaeology.

The two main objectives of the workshop were, firstly, to bring together what is understood about the processes underlying agroforestry practice, and, secondly, to provide a forum to explore relevant models and modelling approaches. The workshop was also able to play a role in examining the agroforestry systems encountered in temperate and Mediterranean areas, including both traditional and more innovative agroforestry practices. The main aspects discussed were: ecological interactions amongst components, environmental impact, economics and policy modelling.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The primary objective of this book is to offer practical means for strengthening the economics and policy dimension of the agroforestry discipline. This book, written by the leading experts in economics and agroforestry, encompasses case studies from Australia, China, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Mexico, Micronesia, Tanzania, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The applied economic methodologies encompass a wide variety of case studies including enterprise/farm budget models through Faustmann models, Policy Analysis Matrix, production function approach, risk assessment models, dynamic programming, linear programming, meta-modeling, contingent valuation, attribute-based choice experiments, econometric modeling, and institutional economic analysis. It is our belief that these methodologies help agroforestry students and professionals conduct rigorous assessment of economic and policy aspects of agroforestry systems and to produce less biased and more credible information. Furthermore, the economic and policy issues explored in the book - profitability, environmental benefits, risk reduction, household constraints, rural development, and institutional arrangements - are central to further agroforestry adoption in both tropical and temperate regions. All of the chapters in this volume were subject to rigorous peer review by at least one other contributing author and one external reviewer. We would like to acknowledge the indispensable collaboration of those who provided careful external reviews: Ken Andrasko, Chris Andrew, Peter Boxall, Norman Breuer, Bill Hyde, Tom Holmes, Sherry Larkin, Jagannadharao Matta, Venkatrao Nagubadi, Roz Naylor, Thomas Randolph, Gerald Shively, Changyou Sun, Bo Jellesmark Thorsen, and Yaoqi Zhang.
