Superb, tight first edition of this hefty compilation of letters home from this officer with the 129th Regiment Illinois Infantry -- and a choi…ce presentation copy, bearing a full-page inscription and signature in black fineline on half-title page: "For Nancy & Adlai -- / Yet another Illinois / couple who have served / their State and Nation / with distinction. / With warmest personal / regards & respect. / John Culver / USS. Iowa. / May 6, 1979 / Washington D.C." John Culver (1932-2018) was a noted Iowa attorney and politician who served that state as a Democrat both in the U.S. House (1965-75) and the Senate (1975-81) -- and whether related to the Civil War officer remains unclear. Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021) served Illinois as U.S. Senator from 1969 to 1981.

In den WarenkorbSee her entry and that of Macqueen-Pope in the Oxford DNB. The two items are in fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper. Both with the valediction and signature in a large flowing hand, and the second letter also with an autograph postscript. Both are 1p, 4to, and folded three times. ONE (7 July 1952): Addressed to 'Popie… my dear' and with autograph valediction 'Yours always / Julia'. She has 'not been too well for over a year', and the previous year her 'stupid heart did foolish things', and she was 'ordered to bed for six weeks or more'. She is still 'not allowed to do too much'. She concludes: 'I suppose it is something to have lived to eighty-four, and it is not so easy to throw off things as when one was young. Still, I have had a very good innings, haven't I, and should be contented. I am.' TWO (19 June 1953): Addressed to 'Dear thoughtful Popie', with autograph valediction 'My love / Julia', with autograph postscript 'Everything seems "touched" in this letter!!!' (As the following indicates she uses the word 'touched' twice.) She was 'very touched by your very sweet and I must say flattering telegram to old Julia'. He was 'a dear to take the trouble to remember the eightyfive-year-old girl and she is always touched by the charming little compliments you pay her'. She hopes they will 'meet again soon at a little luncheon', and will arrange that later on.

In den Warenkorband was interred in the Bridgewater-on-Loddon Cemetery, 27th June, 1880. [Sandhurst?] : [s.n.], 1880. Die-cut mourning card, 75 x 114 mm; light foxing, otherwise in very good condition. A poignant mourning card recording the accidental death of Robert Gibson near Serpentine Creek, northwest of Bendigo, in June 1880. Robert had m…arried 17-year-old Catherine Lily Threlfall, of Inglewood, two years earlier, in 1878. Not only was Catherine now widowed at just 19, but she was also expecting the couple's first child at the time of the tragedy: their son, Robert John Gibson, named in honour of the father who would never hold him, was born a short time later. The following report appeared in Bendigo Advertiser, 24 June 1880: 'FATAL GUN ACCIDENT.Our Inglewood correspondent furnishes, andalso a correspondent at theSerpentine, particulars by telegraph of a shocking accidentwhich happened on Tuesday to a young mannamed Robert Gibson,a native of the colony,who went out in the afternoon opossum shooting with a double-barrel gun. As be did notreturn at night, it was feared that an accidenthad occurred, and a number of the neighborswent out to search for him. They however returned unsuccessful. At daylight another searchwas instituted, and this time he was found byMr. Mossop lying dead on the ground, withthe left side of his head completely blownaway. The gun was lying between hislegs and the ramrod grasped in hishand. How the accident happened canonly be surmised. It is believed that he wasloading one barrel when the other accidentallywent off, and shot him in the head. He leavesa widow, a daughter of Mr. Threfall, Bridgewater, aged nineteen years, and to whom he wasmarried a little over a year ago. His motherresides in Sandhurst, and the intelligence of hisawful death must have been a sad blow to her.Deceased was twenty-four years of age, and hadbeen in the employment of Mr. Joel Horwood,of Bridgewater Park, for about ten years. Hewas always a steady, useful, and industriousservant, and at the time of his death, had charge ofMr. Horwood's estate and stock at Serpentine. A magisterial inquiry was held at Serpentine yesterday afternoon, and a finding recorded that deceased was accidentally shot bythe discharge of firearms.'.
