A first edition of Simpson's account of the monuments of the Anglican parish church of St John-at-Hackney, which was built in 1789, replacing the former 16th-century parish church. This is a very scarce work that was printed for private circulation. Bound in half calf, with 3 plates depicting the church and two of the monuments, and illustrations accompanying the text. This is the second part of a four-part work consisting of: 'Some notices of the Life of Henry Lord Percy, Sixth Earl of Northumberland, and of the Parish Church of St. Augustine, afterwards St. John at Hackney'; 'Some account of the monuments in Hackney Church'; 'Memorials of St. John at Hackney' and 'Index of names, etc. to Memorials of St. John at Hackney'. Stamps from St Saviour's Lodge on 28 Great Cambridge Street, on the back of the frontispiece, on the title page and on the first page of the first and second chapters. Appendix to the rear with extracts of the vestry minutes. Half calf binding. Externally smart, though there is some wear to the spine and the extremities, and the front board is detached.
