Paperback. Zustand: Good. For decades, historians have primarily analyzed charges of black-on-white rape in the South through accounts of lynching or manifestly unfair trial proceedings, suggesting that white southerners invariably responded with extralegal violence and sham trials when white women accused black men of assault. Lisa Lindquist Dorr challenges this view with a careful study of legal records, newspapers, and clemency files from early-twentieth-century Virginia. White Virginians' inflammatory rhetoric, she argues, did not necessarily predict black men's ultimate punishment. While trials were often grand public spectacles at which white men acted to protect white women and to police interracial relationships, Dorr points to cracks in white solidarity across class and gender lines. At the same time, trials and pardon proceedings presented African Americans with opportunities to challenge white racial power. Taken together, these cases uncover a world in which the mandates of segregation did not always hold sway, in which whites and blacks interacted in the most intimate of ways, and in which white women and white men saw their interests in conflict. In Dorr's account, cases of black-on-white rape illuminate the paradoxes at the heart of segregated southern society: the tension between civilization and savagery, the desire for orderly and predictable racial boundaries despite conflicts among whites and relationships across racial boundaries, and the dignity of African Americans in a system dependent on their supposed inferiority. The rhetoric of protecting white women spoke of white supremacy and patriarchy, but its practice revealed the limits of both.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Key events of the Civil Rights Movement will be brought to life in this exciting and informative new series. The year 1960 was a turning point in the civil rights movement as young Black men and women became peaceful warriors for change. In February, four Black college students, known as the Greensboro Four, were refused service at a lunch counter in North Carolina. Their sit-in inspired similar protests across the country, demonstrating the ideals of civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance. In November, as the year drew to a close, the nation's eyes were on Ruby Bridges, a Black first grader who bravely integrated the William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Desegregation would create a crisis of law and order throughout the South as the decade continued. ABOUT THE SERIES: The years from 1955 to 1965 are at the heart of the civil rights movement-from the Montgomery bus boycott to the Voting Rights Act. The contributions of key activists, including Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Barbara Nash, and Malcolm X, are part of the narrative. Demonstrations of passive resistance and legal challenges were often met with bloodshed and violence against Black Americans fighting to end segregation and discrimination. Yet the courage of those yearning for equal opportunities under the law ultimately produced legislation affirming that every American should have the same constitutional rights, regardless of color, race, or gender. With stunning photographs throughout and rich back matter, each book focuses on a specific year and chronologically follows the detailed events that occurred and the changes that took place.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Brendan Kennelly is one of Ireland?s most distinguished poets. He achieved inter-national recognition with his shocking epic poem Cromwell, following this with the even more notorious Book of Judas, which topped the Irish bestsellers list. His latest piece of mischief, Poetry My Arse, out-Judases Cromwell, sinking its teeth into the pants of poetry itself. But his poetry has always taken on the mantle of the outcast, revealing as well as reviling, as A Time for Voices clearly shows. This selection draws on thirty years of his poetry, including classics such as My Dark Fathers, The Visitor and Poem from a Three Year Old, as well as a spattering from Cromwell. A Time for Voices is now out of print. All the poems from the book were reprinted in his later retrospective, Familiar Strangers: New & Selected Poems 1960-2004. ?I believe poetry must always be a flight from deadening authoritative egotism and must find its voices in the byways, laneways, backyards, nooks and crannies of self. It is critics who talk of ?an authentic voice?; but a poet, living his uncertainties, is riddled with different voices, many of them in vicious conflict. The poem is the arena where these voices engage each other in open and hidden conflict, and continue to do so until they are all heard.? ? Brendan Kennelly. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER . A fascinating explanation for why white America has become fractured and divided in education and class, from the acclaimed author of Human Diversity. "I'll be shocked if there's another book that so compellingly describes the most important trends in American society."-David Brooks, New York Times In Coming Apart, Charles Murray explores the formation of American classes that are different in kind from anything we have ever known, focusing on whites as a way of driving home the fact that the trends he describes do not break along lines of race or ethnicity. Drawing on five decades of statistics and research, Coming Apart demonstrates that a new upper class and a new lower class have diverged so far in core behaviors and values that they barely recognize their underlying American kinship-divergence that has nothing to do with income inequality and that has grown during good economic times and bad. The top and bottom of white America increasingly live in different cultures, Murray argues, with the powerful upper class living in enclaves surrounded by their own kind, ignorant about life in mainstream America, and the lower class suffering from erosions of family and community life that strike at the heart of the pursuit of happiness. That divergence puts the success of the American project at risk. The evidence in Coming Apart is about white America. Its message is about all of America.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Instant New York Times Bestseller The riveting new book on the momentous year, campaign, and election that shaped American history It's January 2, 1960: the day that Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy declared his candidacy; and with this opening scene, Chris Wallace offers readers a front-row seat to history. From the challenge of primary battles in a nation that had never elected a Catholic president, to the intense machinations of the national conventions--where JFK chose Lyndon Johnson as his running mate over the impassioned objections of his brother Bobby--this is a nonfiction political thriller filled with intrigue, cinematic action, and fresh reporting. Like with many popular histories, readers may be familiar with the story, but few will know the behind-the-scenes details, told here with gripping effect. Featuring some of history's most remarkable characters, page-turning action, and vivid details, Countdown 1960 follows a group of extraordinary politicians, civil rights leaders, Hollywood stars, labor bosses, and mobsters during a pivotal year in American history. The election of 1960 ushered in the modern era of presidential politics, with televised debates, private planes, and slick advertising. In fact, television played a massive role. More than 70 million Americans watched one or all four debates. The public turned to television to watch campaign rallies. And on the night of the election, the contest between Kennedy and Nixon was so close that Americans were glued to their televisions long after dawn to see who won. The election of 1960 holds stunning parallels to our current political climate. There were--potentially valid--claims of voter fraud and a stolen election. There was also a presidential candidate faced with the decision of whether to contest the result or honor the peaceful transfer of power.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. John Drury's clear, marvelously erudite, and richly detailed introduction to the Everyman's Library edition of the New Testament reminds us why the King James Version, first published in 1611, has been the favorite of English readers for centuries. Despite a plethora of new translations in the second half of the twentieth century, the King James Version retains its power and appeal because it has the intrinsic value of a classic and is an enduring masterpiece. Drury outlines the fascinating history of this magisterial translation, marveling at the patient generosity with which the translators sifted through and distilled a century of previous scholarship. He points out that their work has endured not only because of the astonishing care they took to reflect faithfully the syntax of the original Hebrew and Greek--which enabled them to dispense with the densely entangled prose style that characterized English writing at the time--but also because of their concern to writers from Milton to Coleridge to George Eliot. From the doctrinal richness of the letters of St. Paul to those four masterpieces of storytelling, the Gospels, the New Testament has served as a source of inspiration for centuries. To quote George Steiner on the centrality of the Bible: What you have in hand is not a book. It is the book. That, of course, is what 'Bible' means. It is the book which, not only in Western humanity, defines the concept of a text. All our other books, however different in matter or method, relate, be it indirectly, to this book of books . . . All other books are inhabited by the murmur of that distant source.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Ted Williams capped a storybook baseball career with a storybook ending, hitting a home run in his last at bat in the major leagues. That blast, on a dreary September 28, 1960, at Boston's Fenway Park, ushered in a post-playing career during which the Red Sox legend would become a first-ballot Hall of Famer just six years later. During his retirement, he maintained his longtime active assistance of the Jimmy Fund in its fight against cancer, encouraged youngsters at his Ted Williams Baseball Camp, and coached current and future big leaguers in Red Sox spring training. In 1969, he was named American League Manager of the Year; in 1991, he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom from George H.W. Bush; and in 1995, a Boston tunnel was dedicated in his honor. In one of his last appearances, Ted joined fellow nominees for baseball's All-Century Team at the 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park--creating an iconic, lasting image of the man known as The Kid, the Splendid Splinter, and Teddy Ballgame.…
