In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: g to vg-. First edition. Small quarto. 94pp. Black pebbled cloth with gilt lettering and ruling on the front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Jonathan D. Stevenson, and an additional engraved portrait of the author. The publication documents the actions and members of the First Regiment of New York Volunteers during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and their postwar lives, up until the time of the books publication. The author, Francis D. Clark, who had been one of the members of the Regiment, begun research for the book 12 years earlier, in 1870. Through an extensive period of correspondence with other comrades from the regiment, personal interviews and governmental record from the War Department, Clark was able to compile this historical document. His work and publication was funded by moneys raised from fellow members of the regiment and in the intervening years Clark had published two brief updates to his work via pamphlets, one in 1871 and 1874. Over the years many of the members of the regiment had decided to stay in California, which coincidentally was in the beginning throws of the Gold Rush, while other had moved back to New York, or to other locations. A significant number of people had died, or their whereabouts were unknown. The author also documents anniversary reunions of the soldiers. The personnel statistics are organized into lists and charters by company and then by name. Binding with some light rubbing to extremities. Some light closed tears and bumping to the head and tail of the spine. There is a smudge at the top right corner of the front cover. Interior with a 1.5" closed tear at the front free endpaper. Sporadic minor water spots, smudges and/or pencil markings throughout. Binding in good, interior in overall very good- condition. Jonathan Drake Stevenson (18001894) a New York born politician who served in the New York State Assembly and then was the commanding officer of the First Regiment of New York Volunteers during the Mexican-American War in California. He entered California mining and real estate businesses after the war, and died in San Francisco on February 14, 1894.

Systems tend toward equilibrium, and so in the decades of conflict shifting from the East Coast westward, the soldiery for fighting the Mexican War came to be drawn from places as far-flung as New York. This first volunteer regiment, raised by Jonathan Drake Stevenson (a New York State Assemblyman) in 1846, was as much an instrument of combat as of redistribution. The Secretary of War particularly sought unmarried men with various training with a view to their remaining in California after the conflict ended. The regiment sailed around Cape Horn and participated in a handful of battles, but the interest in its history is drawn largely on the Nachleben of its men. Most did indeed stay in California and, just in time for the Gold Rush of 1848, many of its veterans thrived in commerce and government. Francis Clark served in D Company of the regiment, and undertook the present work, both recording the history and achievements of the regiment as well as the accomplishments and whereabouts (if still alive, or else when and how deceased) of its veterans. Clark would go on to be Justice of the Peace in San Joaquin County 1852-1854. Much is made of the issues of the book: viz. without the second portrait of Clark and without the appendix; it is generally agreed that the print-run was ca. 400. Presentation copies are rare on the market, and the book has come to auction only 5 times this century.Graff 733; Howes C 432; Tuturow 3523.
