Duodecimo, 360 pp., 194 hymns many with full musical notation; in excellent condition in old sprinkled and polished calf, later spine ornately gilt with red leather label; in a full calf protective bookform case. Rare and important: a delightful copy of this Hawaiian hymnal with extensive four-part musical scoring, the very first music to be printed in the Islands. The title translates as 'The rules of music, for hymns and psalms [with which] to praise God.' This title refers to the first section of the work (56 pp.), which is a musical instruction manual, beginning with 'names for various notes (sharps, flats, clefs, etc.) and ways of reading music; then scales and octaves (here La, Mi, Pa, Ko, Li, Ha, No, La); music notes with scores; and finally music and words.' (Forbes) The second part is a hymnal with 194 hymns. Copies were known to have been distributed before the work as a whole was completed (and some copies are known with only the first 56-page section). Following this is a second title-page for 'Na hiimeni Hawaii, me na leomele; oia ka lua o na hapa o ke kumu leomele' (Hawaiian hymns, with their music; the second part of the rules of music). It would appear that the work was issued in a run of 10,000 - the standard figure for many issues from the zealous and active Mission Press. Such enormous original printing figures are in stark contrast to present rarity: only a minute fraction of the original printings have survived, and the few survivors are more often than not in poor condition. This is a particularly attractive example. . Provenance: With contemporary ink inscription "Hymn Book. Presented by [indecipherable]".

Small loss to lower right corner of first issue (not affecting text); the other issues in fine condition, in protective mylar. Complete run of this Czech avant-garde theatre journal, which arose as a polemical forum for a less conservative, more visually inventive and experimental theatre, and was edited by the poetist writer Jaroslav Seifert. With theoretical essays and manifestos by F. X. ?alda, Jan Barto?, E. F. Burian, Arno?t Dvo?ák, Karel Teige, Ji?í Karásek ze Lvovic, Vít?zslav Nezval; poetry by Halas and Hora; excerpts of plays by Nezval, Barto?, Alfred Jarry, and others. Also contains shorter glosses about cultural events related to theatre. With drawings by Toyen, Jaroslav Král, Franti?ek Muzika, and Arch. Heythum and appealing, understated typographic design throughout, to both front and rear wrappers. 1 vols. 8vo. 1 vols. 8vo. A Scottish poet and literary man, Motherwell edited "The Harp of Renfrewshire" in 1819, wrote "Renfrewshire Characters and Scenery" as "Isaac Brown" in 1824 and in 1827 his work "Minstrelsy Ancient and Modern" brought him to the attention and subsequent friendship of Sir Walter Scott. He collaborated with Hogg on the 1835 edition of Burns. He was also at one time the editor of the "Glasgow Courier" and the "Paisley Advertiser." He was among the earliest to use Scandinavian mythology in his verse, an authority on ballads and was known for the wide range of emotion expressed in his verse. Among his best known poems were "Jeanie Morison" and "The Battle Flag of Sigurd." With a manuscript attestation reading "The preceeding verses are Motherwell, and in his hand writing. David Robertson, Glasgow, 6 Aug. 1849." David Robertson had published "The Poetical Works of William Motherwell" in Glasgow, 1847, the engraved title of which accompanies the manuscript. Consisting of three-sixteen line verses apparently addressed to "May," a manuscript correction and light soiling, else very good.

pp. 199-201, [blank 202].Rare royal proclamation, issued 22 August 1766 by King Joseph I of Portugal (1714-1750-1777) and registered and certified by his secretary Joaquim Joseph Borralho, granting August Ludwig Thimne the exclusive privilege and patent for ten years to set up a factory in Porto or Lisbon to produce foil from silver and other metals for setting diamonds and other precious stones. The proclamation forbids the import of contraband foil into Portugal, giving Thimne the sole rights to the production and sale of the foil. Thimne discovered how to manufacture foil to set diamonds and other gems and stones in 18th-century Portugal, where the setting of diamonds and gems and the creation of spectacular jewellery became more and more important.A highly interesting proclamation on the Portuguese diamond and gemstone industry, especially on underlaying with foil as an appearance modification technique used for 18th-century Portuguese jewelry, not only granting Thimne a privilege, but also regulating the production for the Portuguese market. The bifolium is almost completely torn into two leaves on the fold line, but otherwise in very good condition.l Portuguese and Brazilian books in the John Carter Brown Library, 1537 to 1839 (2009), 766/5; WorldCat 81024902? [3], [1 blank] pp.This is an extremely rare early nineteenth-century Brazilian royal pamphlet calling for the revamping of the court system in Pernambuco. Only one other copy is known to exist, held today at the John Carter Brown Library in Richmond, RI. According to Camargo-Borba de Moraes, another edition of this texts exists with minor differences in the spelling. The pamphlet addresses the issue of a lack of justice administration in the villas and courts of the Pernambuco district in Brazil. Issued by Queen Maria I of Portugal, the opening paragraphs of the pamphlet describe the current state of judicial affairs in the region as unsatisfying, since "a single man cannot carry out the tasks sufficiently in a region so large". It further details that "my subjects do not enjoy the guaranteed security of their lives and property as they are lawfully entitled to" (p. 1). To remedy this, the pamphlet proposes a six-part solution that involves dividing the state into two sections for easier management. The "Alvará with the force of Law" signed by the royal family on January 15, 1810, and countersigned by the count of Aguiar creates a new judicial district called "Sertão de Pernambuco." This district covers a larger area than the previous administration and will be governed according to the wishes of the queen. The pamphlet also outlines the appointment of a new bailiff and clerk to assist with the execution of the. The queen grants the new officeholder the power to delegate judicial power to local deputies throughout the district to rule on minor cases in his stead. This pamphlet was published in 1810 during a tumultuous period in Brazilian history. Brazil's independence was sparked by the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in the country, and Portugal's occupation by Napoleon's army made it unable to function as Brazil's metropole. This resulted in the opening of Brazil's ports to foreign trade and the establishment of new bureaucratic institutions in the country. Despite rebellions in several regions, including Pernambuco, Brazil remained territorially intact, with the exception of the loss of what is now Uruguay. With some pencil annotations and a very small manuscript number (266) in brown ink, all in the top right corner of leaf [A]1r. The back board is very slightly scruffed, with some minor foxing, mainly to the margins of the leaves.l Camargo-Borba de Moraes, bibl. da impressão régia vol. 2, 112; WorldCat 82824116 (1 copy: John Carter Brown Library).

1451, [1 blank] pp.Second edition of the entire Bible in the Hawaiian language, but the first edition (in octavo) to be published in a single volume. The translation, a joint effort of American missionaries and Hawaiian advisers, was a monumental work of language and scholarship. "Neither of the two very different groups of people who produced the Baibala - the missionary scholars working with ancient texts and the Hawaiian chiefs and advisors, guardians of a millennium of traditional Kanaka learning - could have produced even a pedestrian Bible translation on their own. Together, through over a decade of incessant and mostly fruitful labor and cooperation, they created a work for the ages, among the best Bible translations of their century, and an enduring literary monument today" (Lyon). The first gospels in the Hawaiian language were printed in 1827-1828, ultimately leading to a complete translation of the New Testament in 1835, which was revised in 1837. The first translation of the Old Testament was published in 1838 and, together with the 1837 New Testament incorporated in a complete edition of the Bible in three volumes. In 1843 these texts were reprinted, with several mistakes corrected, in a more compact version and then bound together to form this edition of the Bible. Apparently sales of the 10,000 copies printed were slow, with records showing that "between 400 and 600 Bibles were bound and presumably distributed each year" (Forbes). This slow distribution could explain why no new edition of the complete Bible in Hawaiian appeared until 1868.With an 1853 owner's inscription on the title-page. Slightly foxed and with several sections slightly browned; a very good copy.l Forbes 1416; Judd 165; Lyon, "No ka Baibala Hemolele: The making of the Hawaiian Bible", in: Palapala I (2017), pp. 113-151.
