Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - \*\*WINNER OF THE BOOKER PRIZE 2021\*\*Discover the powerful prizewinning story of a family in crisis.'Astonishing' Colm TóibínThe Promise charts the crash and burn of a white South African family, living on a farm outside Pretoria. The Swarts are gathering for Ma's funeral. The younger generation, Anton and Amor, detest everything the family stand for - not least the failed promise to the Black woman who has worked for them her whole life. After years of service, Salome was promised her own house, her own land. yet somehow, as each decade passes, that promise remains unfulfilled. The narrator's eye shifts and blinks: moving fluidly between characters, flying into their dreams; deliciously lethal in its observation. And as the country moves from old deep divisions to its new so-called fairer society, the lost promise of more than just one family hovers behind the novel's title. In this story of a diminished family, sharp and tender emotional truths hit home. Confident, deft and quietly powerful, The Promise is literary fiction at its finest.'Gorgeous and pleasurable' Tessa Hadley'The most important book of the last ten years' Edmund White'Simply: you must read it' Claire Messud 304 pp. Englisch.

Pp. Zustand: Sehr gut. 188 S. : graph. Darst. ; 21 cm Tadelloses Exemplar. This book tries to answer some intriguing questions concerning the power of agoral gatherings. The 20th century is discussed as an age of crowds and masses. The book asks why the communist system disappeared in Europe during the last two decades of the 20th century and examines the factors which determined the collapse of the main military, political, social, economic and even symbolic infrastructures of the communist system in Europe. It poses the question why the end of communism in Europe was a peaceful phenomenon - except in the Balkan Peninsula. The author also discusses the predictability of this kind of phenomenon. In order to answer these questions the book introduces and extends the notion of agoral gathering as a new concept in the area of collective behavior and interprets the large-scale political transformations in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s in terms of peaceful collective behaviors as a political alternative for post-communist countries. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - From the acclaimed composer and biographer Jan Swafford comes the definitive biography of one of the most lauded musical geniuses in history, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At the earliest ages it was apparent that Wolfgang Mozart's singular imagination was at work in every direction. He hated to be bored and hated to be idle, and through his life he responded to these threats with a repertoire of antidotes mental and physical. Whether in his rabidly obscene mode or not, Mozart was always hilarious. He went at every piece of his life, and perhaps most notably his social life, with tremendous gusto. His circle of friends and patrons was wide, encompassing anyone who appealed to his boundless appetites for music and all things pleasurable and fun.Mozart was known to be an inexplicable force of nature who could rise from a luminous improvisation at the keyboard to a leap over the furniture. He was forever drumming on things, tapping his feet, jabbering away, but who could grasp your hand and look at you with a profound, searching, and melancholy look in his blue eyes. Even in company there was often an air about Mozart of being not quite there. It was as if he lived onstage and off simultaneously, a character in life's tragicomedy but also outside of it watching, studying, gathering material for the fabric of his art.Like Jan Swafford's biographies Beethoven and Johannes Brahms, Mozart is the complete exhumation of a genius in his life and ours: a man who would enrich the world with his talent for centuries to come and who would immeasurably shape classical music. As Swafford reveals, it's nearly impossible to understand classical music's origins and indeed its evolutions, as well as the Baroque period, without studying the man himself. 810 pp. Englisch.

First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed to a translator into German of Wilde's works, ("Isidore Leo Pavia from his friend Alfred Douglas. December 1902") with later inscription by the recipient on half-title. Lord Alfred Douglas anonymously published his third volume (and second volume of poetry) in May 1899. It had an enthusiastic reception (the Daily Telegraph praised "work of a remarkably high order" and the Academy identified "a true gift of mellifluous versification"). However, it was the glowing review in the Outlook on 3 June 1899, headed "A Great Unknown", that was celebrated jointly by Wilde and Douglas. In a letter to Leonard Smithers from 8 June 1899, Wilde noted that "Bosie is naturally in high spirits over his first review in the Outlook; it certainly is splendid. It arrived while we were dining together at Avenue Kleber, and we celebrated the glory of the 'Great Unknown' at the Horse-Shoe Bar". Douglas presented this copy to Isidore Leo Pavia (1875-1945) who, in collaboration with Hermann Freiherr von Teschenberg, was the first translator of nearly all Wilde's works into German. James Agate (1877-1947), the diarist and theatre critic, provides some significant detail on Pavia. In Agate's first volume of autobiography, Ego (1935), Agate described him as "perpetually hard up, and a wit who spends his life pouring vinegar on troubled waters. Everybody's enemy except his own". Pavia would become Agate's secretary and partner. The final volume of Agate's autobiography, Ego 9 (1945) was dedicated to his memory. Writing on Hermann Freiherr von Teschenberg in The Wildean (January 2008), Horst Schroeder notes that ".the collaborator on all occasions was Isidore Leo Pavia. much of Pavia' s life is known to us only from hearsay, in this case from James Agate, into whom Pavia bumped by chance in a London pub some day about 1923, never to leave him again". The later recipient ("and now: From Isidore Leo Pavia to his friend Betty Ricketts. March 1925") is described by Agate as a "clever hostess who entertains her guests as well as feeds them. Plies you with drink and sets you down at a bridge-table with three good players. An impulsive, generous creature". Agate also reports a conversation with Pavia in 1934. Apparently Pavia "very impressively" told Agate that "Betty Ricketts has taken a great load off my mind. She has promised to have me cremated". Agate responded with the question "When?" Octavo. Original vellum-backed blue boards, titles to spine gilt. Vellum discoloured, extremities worn, covers soiled, browning and foxing to endpapers, occasional spliting between gatherings at gutter; nevertheless a good copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. "A NEWLY RECOGNISED AMERICANUM Folio, pp. [xii] 228. Roman letter. Fine, large engraved portrait of Rathborne by Simon de Passe bound at end, engraved title with allegorical figures of Arithmetica and Geometria surmounted by celestial and terrestrial globes and 'Artifex' trampling fools and dunces underfoot, and two vignettes of surveyors in the field with their various instruments by W[illiam] H[ole], further engraved portrait of the dedicatee, a young Charles I as Prince of Wales, by F. Delaram. Elaborate woodcut headpieces to opening of each book, geometric woodcut illustrations to text throughout, including a three-quarter page illustration of a quadrant, woodcut initials. The diagram on p 160 is believed to have inspired the configuration of the Pilgrim Land Survey of Cape Cod conducted in 1636. It is now known that Pilgrim William Brewster carried a copy of the Surveyor with him on the Mayflower. O3 is a cancel, fifth line of verso has "58 4/5". Light dampstaining to lower margin, slight discolouration to upper edge of a few leaves in initial gathering, occasional light thumbmark, paperflaw to outer edge of R3, generally very good. Contemporary vellum over pasteboard, the spine titled in brown ink in a 17th-century hand. A little spotting to outer edge of upper board. Edward Thorne's contemporary ownership inscription to title, also library of the Earls of Macclesfield, their nineteenth-century armorial bookplate to front pastedown, and armorial blindstamp to title and A3. FIRST EDITION. A very good copy of "the first comprehensive English textbook on Survey" (Singer, vol. III, p. 541). Rathborne addressed the difficulty for contemporary surveyors of computing the areas of fields and estates. He was an advocate of the new decimal arithmetic introduced by Simon Stevin in 1585, and made use of trigonometry, as well as being a staunch supporter of the then relatively new pocket-tables of logarithms. This is one of the most important works of the new kind of vernacular literature on surveying which began to appear at around this time. These offered practical advice for surveyors 'in the field', using relatively straightforward equipment, as opposed to concentrating on fanciful advances in scientific instruments. Rathborne presents the basic principles of geometry, and expounds upon their application, as well as discussing instruments useful to the art of surveying (some of them of his own invention, viz. the 'peractor' and the decimal chain, an improved version of which is still in use today), and finally discourses on the legal aspects of survey, thus setting out a comprehensive introduction to the practical process of surveying. The frontispiece portrait of the author here shows him in 1616 (aged 44), in a high ruff, at a desk holding a compass, with other, simple mathematical instruments in the lower spandrels (Hind II, p. 267). The portrait of the dedicatee, the future Charles I as Prince of Wales, by Francis Delaram, shows the future King wearing an elaborate lace collar, and the order of the garter, with his royal arms beneath. The stunning title-page engraving by William Hole, an English artist active around this time, and mainly known for his portraits and frontispieces, shows "surveyors at work with theodolite and plane-table, their instruments mounted on tripods readings are entered in an orderly manner in a field-book and plotting is done with a protractor and a mounted needle for pricking points. A bearing-dial or circle termed a 'circumferentor' is also in use, and the particular pattern described includes a table of horizontal equivalents on the alidade". (ibid., p. 542). STC 20748; Hind II, p. 267; Johnson 27:15; cf. Taylor, Tudor, pp. 154-5. Not in Alden. English".

A very good copy, crisp and clean, in contemporary English calf, covers bordered with a double blind rule, upper joint cracked at head, head chipped, spine a little rubbed, two corners worn. Exceptionally rare and important work, the second edition of Edward Wrights translation into English of Napier s seminal work on logarithms the Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio. In this edition the original 1616 title has been removed and replaced with a new gathering which includes all the new material for this edition a new title and an appendix of 8 leaves, all of which are placed at the beginning. Edward Wright was famous for his skill at navigation. He wrote Certaine errors in navigation in 1599 and was for a time a mathematical lecturer in London (a successor to Thomas Hood s lecturers just prior to the establishment of Gresham College). Wright was a friend of Henry Briggs, and it was through this connection that he first learned of Napier s logarithms. After Wright translated Napier s Descriptio, he sent the translation to Napier for approval. Napier endorsed Wright s work, but before it could be published, Wright died. Wright s son, Samuel, then assumed responsibility. It was he who wrote the dedication to the East India Company (which had supported Edward s mathematical work), but he, too, died before the work was through the press. It fell to Henry Briggs to complete the task. Briggs added a Preface to the Reader and a final short section describing an aid for finding the proportional parts needed to determine logarithms for numbers not in the table. What Briggs called an Instrumental Table is neither an instrument nor a table but rather a folding plate that today we would simply call a nomogram. Some copies of this edition include a sixteen-page appendix by William Oughtred not present here. John Napier was born into a prominent family of Scottish lairds. Little is known about his childhood and youth; he enrolled at St. Andrews University at the age of thirteen, but there is no record that he ever graduated. Napier later wrote that his fervent interest in theology was kindled at St. Andrews. It is probable that he left to study in Europe, and it must have been there that he acquired his knowledge of higher mathematics and his taste for classical literature. In 1572, just about the time of his marriage, Napier succeeded to the family estates. When time permitted from their daily running, he played an active role in the Scottish Protestant reform movement. What time he had left he used to study mathematics. The first edition in Latin was published in 1614 and is one of the most influential mathematical books ever published. It introduced the world to the concept of logarithms and their use. By simplifying arduous calculation, that is, by reducing multiplication and division to addition and subtraction, logarithms became the fundamental principle behind most of the methods of, and aides to, computation prior to the invention of the electronic computer. They also proved to be a fundamental component of many mathematical systems. The text explains the uses of logarithms in both plane and spherical trigonometry and adds many pages of tables. Napier s method of producing the table was not described, but Napier indicated that should this work be suitably.

Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. vi, 115pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket edgeworn, with a few edge chips along top. A tight, quite nice first edition of this gathering of eight essays by noted Civil War scholars that includes Don E. Fehrenbacher, David M. Potter, Avery O. Craven, Robert W. Johannsen. This copy bears a choice autograph addition, being extra-illustrated with a Typed Letter Signed from Roy F. Nichols (who contributes "Why the Democratic Party Divided" to this volume) tipped to the leaf facing the title page, 1p, 8½" X 11", Philadelphia, PA, 4 April 1961. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "University of Pennsylvania" letterhead listing Nichols as vice-provost and dean, he chats cordially with Gates (officer with the New York Civil War Round Table) about his upcoming visit to NYC, which Gates apparently arranged -- likely Nichols was a guest speaker for this Round table. Signed boldly in full in blue ballpoint. Nichols (1896-1973) was an American historian best known for his 1948 Pulitzer Prize winner, "The Disruption of American Democracy.".

4to (ca. 175 x 230 mm). Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper. 11-277 numbered leaves (lacking the first 10 ff. from the front of the volume, all likely from the Fihrist), per extensum, 16 lines in black Naskh, words and headings in red throughout, over ten leaves with full-page illustrations and diagrams, some of these in colour, including the double-page illustration of the globe as spheres, many tables and diagrams also appearing throughout the text. Contemporary leather-backed cloth boards, cloth with stamped tughra of sultan to covers (head-over-heels). A fine early 19th century manuscript copy of the famous scholarly encyclopedia, not printed until 1835 (in Bulaq). The "Marifetname", or "Book of Gnosis" is a compilation of astronomical, astrological, mathematical, anatomical, psychological, philosophical as well as mystical religious texts. It is famous for containing the first treatment of post-Copernican astronomy by a Muslim scholar, placing the sun at the center of the universe. - Ibrahim Haqqi Erzurumi (1703-80) is considered an outstanding figure of 18th century Ottoman Turkey. Based on an immense knowledge of the Sufi branch of Islam as well as his studies in Western science, he devoted himself to the domains of both religion and science, considering both a means of approaching God. - Although Ibrahim Haqqi completed his work in 1756, very few surviving manuscripts predate the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The British Library holds a copy (MS.Or.12964) compiled in 1235 H (1820 CE), and the earliest known manuscript copy was long thought to be that in the Khalili collection, dated 1226 H / 1811 CE (J. M. Rogers, Empire of the Sultans, 1995, no. 74, pp. 121 & 123), but a copy predating this by seven years was sold by Bloomsbury in 2014 (7 December sale, lot 123), and a manuscript dated to ca. 1760 was offered by Inlibris. - While this copy of the text is in a relatively informal hand, the diagrams have been executed to an excellent standard. The text and drawings were likely executed in different workshops, as the scribe allocated far more space than necessary for the illustrator, resulting in numerous blank pages throughout the text. - Leather spine worn with slight loss to leather at extremities, cloth also worn with loss. Contemporary foliation throughout, a few scuffs and smudges. Spine cracked with a few individual gatherings becoming loose. Overall a clean copy.

12mo, pp. xvi, 88, 93-164, 173-196, 201-242, 245-260, 265-346, 365-382, [2] + frontispiece. Irregular pagination as issued (see below). Original sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label. Some spotting and light soiling, small wormhole to lower margin at beginning. Rubbed, a bit worn and scratched, joints just cracking at ends, label defective. Ramsay, originally apprenticed as a wigmaker, transitioned into bookselling over the course of the 1710s, also publishing his own poetry. In 1720 he produced a title-page, 'Poems, by Allan Ramsay', to accompany gatherings-up of stock of individual poems which he had been publishing separately for some time. The experiment was evidently a success as he continued the process through several more editions, tacking gently in the direction of regularising the contents: the first versions had separate pagination for most poems, then parts were reset as necessary and pagination altered. In later editions pagination was theoretically continuous - except that volumes were still assembled from whichever parts happened to be on hand, while individual poems were sold off separately and may have run out of stock. As a result no two copies have exactly the same contents, and none match the table of contents. Furthermore, the individual poems have their own title-pages with dates that can vary individually from copy to copy. Burns Martin and Foxon each go into some detail of the constituent parts of the earlier editions, and this fourth edition follows exactly that pattern: the contents leaf at the end lists six poems not present in this volume - with corresponding gaps in pagination - but there are an similar number of poems unlisted in the contents present. (Burns Martin records: 'The system of pagination is even more amazing than in the other two octavos'.) Ramsay clearly continued reprinting and issuing copies for some years, with several poems in this volume having dates later than the general title-page: 'The morning interview' is dated 1731; 'Tartana' 1732; and 'Scriblers lash'd' and 'Content' 1728. The portrait frontispiece, furthermore, is an engraving of a drawing done by Ramsay's son in 1729 and so could not have been issued with the edition if it had been produced in 1727. Ramsay must have continued generating copies using his 1727 title-page for at least five years afterward. This copy provides additional bibliographical interest (and proof that the contents are as intended) by means of its binding, which has identical tooling to that of several other surviving copies, though here in wholly unrestored state. Furthermore, the third compartment has its centre left blank, and it appears to have either been numbered in blind or had a numbering piece (now lost), most likely with the number 'I' - which would correspond with the fact that a 'second volume' was issued, entirely separately but intended (as per Martin) to accompany this one, in 1729. Octavo, paperbound (stiff, illus. rose wrappers), uncut, tissue-protected frontis., 46 pp. Illustrated. Very Good, with sunned spine and edgewear that includes light chipping. From book: Mary-Alice, eating her very soft-boiled egg and her square of buttered toast, was serenely unaware of the stormy forces gathering about the breakfast table until she heard her mother say, with a sob in her voice, "But I hate to think, Michael, that she won't have what we had." "What did we have?" "Oh, all the beautiful beliefs about Christmas Day. And now, we've lost them, you and I -- we've lost the shepherds and the angels singing, and the Babe in the Manger, and we've lost the Star." Mary-Alice reached for another square of toast, but was stopped by her mother's question, "How many have you had, Mary-Alice?" "Two." "Drink your milk before you have another." Mary-Alice, having drained her glass, demanded: "How did the star get losted?" "There, you see?" said her mother tensely. "See what?" Michael had risen, and stood looking down at his wife. "What can we tell her? Am I to repeat to her what you have just said to me -- that Christmas Day is a pagan hold-over, that the Wise Men and all the rest are just -- poetic fantasies?" "We must face the truth." "But what is the truth, Michael?". Christmas, Illustrated. bb/lh.
