The influence of this one restaurant on how we eat today cannot be overstated, particularly in underscoring the essential importance of organic, locally grown, ecologically harvested produce. When Alice Waters opened Chez Panisse in 1971, it was the culmination of her conviction that each of us can change our world—born with the campus protests at UC Berkeley in 1964—and the vision of a place where her friends could gather and exchange ideas around the table. Chez Panisse has become a national treasure, the center of a food revolution, and a place where new ideas and collaborations continue to emerge, and its abundant and colorful history is celebrated in this beautifully produced and illustrated album. ### 200 Farbabbildungen, 322 Seiten, , Altpreis: 56,00. Albumen print (23 x 29 cm), pasted on original card. Title in negative, manuscript title on card; light spotting, card margins chipped. This photograph features the Damascus Gate, the most used entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem. The Damascus Gate, as it stands in this picture, was built in 1537 under the rule of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and has not changed form since. In this photograph, a group of Arabs are seen to be leaving the Old City through the Damascus Gate and gathering in the plaza outside it. Félix Bonfils (8 March 1831 – 1885) was a French photographer and writer who was active in the Middle East. He was born in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort and died in Alès. Félix worked as a bookbinder but in 1860 he joined General d'Hautpoul's expedition to the Levant. Soon after returning from Lebanon he became a photographer. The family moved to Beirut in 1867 where they opened a photographic studio called "Maison Bonfils". Four years later Felix reported the results of what must have been staggering labor: 15,000 prints of Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Greece, and 9,000 stereoscopic views. Those negatives were made on glass plates, coated with a collodion solution sensitised with silver nitrate. The plates had to be prepared on the spot-usually in a tent in the Middle East. Then they were exposed and developed immediately afterwards. Prints could be made later, quite literally by sunlight: paper impregnated with a silver salt solution was stretched against the glass plate in a frame, and then exposed out of doors under direct sunlight. Though the prints, golden in tone, were beautiful, the photographers had to use egg white, or albumen, as a binding agent on the paper and this eventually became unpleasant since the Bonfils family apparently prepared the egg-white themselves. Lydie Bonfils, Felix's wife, in 1917 was heard to mutter, 'I never want to smell another egg again,' and supposedly forbade them at her breakfast table thereafter. Artikel-Nr.: 59402.

Worsley's political career as member of parliament for the Isle of Wight constituencies for Newport (1774-83) and subsequently Newtown (1790-3) were hampered by a mixture of limited skill, a somewhat abrasive personality and the very public collapse of his marriage, but "antiquarian studies were always an important refuge. His father and grandfather had begun work on The History of the Isle of Wight and Worsley brought it to completion, albeit with unacknowledged contributions from the Newport attorney Richard Clarke. It was published in 1781 after four years' labour and was well received, Worsley having been elected both FSA and FRS in 1778 on its strength. He found it satisfying work, gathering materials patiently and searching the sources with some expertise. Modern opinion considers it 'well researched, organized, and written, and handsomely produced' (Hicks, 166)" (ODNB). Provenance: from the library of Major J. R. Abbey (1894-1969), who built the standard collection of travel books illustrated in aquatint and lithography, with his bookplate to the front free endpaper, and a note to the rear free endpaper recording purchase at the posthumous 1942 sale of Sir Charles Chadwyck-Healey, 1st Baronet (1845-1919), with his bookplate to the front pastedown. 6 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A fine set. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. First editions of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted: "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity." 6 volumes, octavo (208 x 132 mm). Finely bound by Zaehnsdorf for Hatchards in later 20th-century blue crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt, double gilt fillets to covers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Bookplate of John F. Butler to pastedowns. Spines very slightly faded, a few tiny marks to covers, light foxing to a few pages, else a near-fine set. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. First UK editions, first impressions, of Churchill's masterpiece, in a handsome binding. The Second World War ranks as one of the supreme historical achievements of the 20th century, and is commonly cited as a major factor in Churchill being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". The UK editions were published a few months after the US editions and, unlike the latter, included Churchill's last-minute revisions. Cohen A240.4 (I-VI).a. Artikel-Nr.: 124673.
Buch. Softcover. Verlagsfrisch New copy Rural History in Europe (RURHE 14) The Golden Age of State Enquiries Rural Enquiries in the Nineteenth Century. From Fact Gathering to Political Instrument N. Vivier (ed.) 291 p., 2 b/w ill., 10 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm, 2014 ISBN: 978-2-503-55284-2 Languages: English Paperback The publication is available. Retail price: EUR 69,00 The heart of the nineteenth century was the golden age of state enquiries in Europe. This international comparative study highlights the importance of transnational cultural tranfers and the enquiries as a means of construction of the nation state. Any state intervention in society requires a high degree of knowledge. This is usually given by a state-sponsored enquiry. Some of these surveys can be traced back to Antiquity, but by the nineteenth century enquiries proved to be different because the nature of the state and the distribution of political influence had changed, and the scientific and financial means to investigate had progressed. This new context prompted states to launch large enquiries to assess transformations in the rural world: new techniques, opening to long distance trade. The heart of the nineteenth century was the golden age of state enquiries. Inspired by the nascent sociology, they fulfilled the desire for scientific knowledge accessible to everyone and the search for innovative solutions for the improvement of agriculture and rural life. Most of those enquiries about the countryside are well known by historians who have built their work on the vast data collections. In a different approach, the present volume does not focus on their content; it examines the origins and functioning of the enquiries as new and important objects of historical research. Fourteen studies are gathered from across twelve countries. The main focus is on Western Europe, with broadening perspectives to the East (Ottoman Empire) and West (Canada and Mexico). The International comparative perspectives highlight the importance of transnational cultural transfers in the nineteenth-century Atlantic world. French and British methods were considered models of progress and of a civilized state. Statistical methods and the needs of the administration were discussed and adapted in each state according to their conception of state power, in the context of the construction of the nation state. Nadine Vivier is Professor of social and economic history at the University of Maine (Le Mans, France). Her research interests focus on rural societies from 1750 to 2000 in France and in Europe. 0. Taschenbuch. Neuware - This collection of articles offers only a glimpse of the variety of topics that arise around the conversation table of which Walter Sawatsky is part. He converses in the three languages used in this book and is comfortably at home in many countries and contexts in Europe, West and East, new and old. In recognition of a North American Mennonite s continuing involvement among the churches of Europe, this collection of articles by some of the people who belong to that wider network has been assembled. The authors write as representatives of educational institutions, scholarly associations, mission agencies, and churches, but also as friends and colleagues who have been encouraged and inspired by Walter Sawatsky. It is an expression of deep appreciation for a person who has contributed faithfully, not only at numerous conferences and public gatherings, but also in many of Europe s hidden places. Above all, it is intended as an encouragement and welcome for Walter Sawatsky to continue his tireless historical and missiological reflection and connect many others to the conversation. 419 pp. Englisch, Russisch. Buch. Neuware - This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides the most in-depth study of capital punishment in Scotland between the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth century to date. Based upon an extensive gathering and analysis of previously untapped resources, it takes the reader on a journey from the courtrooms of Scotland to the theatre of the gallows. It introduces them to several of the malefactors who faced the hangman's noose and explores the traditional hallmarks of the spectacle of the scaffold. It demonstrates that the period between 1740 and 1834 was one of discussion, debate and fundamental change in the use of the death sentence and how it was staged in practice. In addition, the study provides an innovative investigation of the post-mortem punishment of the criminal corpse. It offers the reader an insight into the scene at the foot of the gibbets from which criminal bodies were displayed and around the dissection tables of Scotland's main universities where criminal bodies were used as cadavers for anatomical demonstration. In doing so it reveals an intermediate stage in the long-term disappearance of public bodily punishment. 248 pp. Englisch. Neu. Artikel-Nr.: 9783319620176.

br. Foreword by Edward de Bono. Designed by the partners. The best graphic design does more than capture attention and make the audience linger. It prolongs the encounter, compelling the reader not only to notice, but to remember. This book is about making graphics memorable by using witty thinking. It argues that ideas which happen in the mind, stay in the mind. Beryl McAlhone and David Stuart begin by explaining what wit is and how it works. They make the case for wit in graphic design, seeing humour as the shortest distance between two people. The different routes designers can take are explainedincluding ambiguity, missing links, substitution and double-takes - to clarify the options available at the start of an assignment. A Smile in the Mind documents the power of intellectual playfulness as it invades even the corporate heartland of annual reports and the dry territory of technical literature. Designers can refer to examples for every category of graphics, from direct mail to information graphics, and for a variety of sectors from leisure and the arts to manufacturing and the law. For the finale, witty designers answer the big question: how did they get the idea? They offer a peep into their private working methods, as they check out word lists, look at things sideways, or put several jobs on the table at once. Gathering together the best examples of graphic wit over the past three decades, A Smile in the Mind shows work from over 300 designers in the USA, Britain, Europe and Japan. cm.25x28, pp.240, Coll.Design. Taschenbuch. Neuware - Oceanographic data collection, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation and tactical surveillance are the applications of Underwater sensor nodes. Moreover, unmanned or autonomous underwater vehicles (UUVs, AUVs), equipped with sensors, will enable the exploration of natural undersea resources and gathering of scientific data in collaborative monitoring missions. Underwater acoustic networking is the enabling technology for these applications. Underwater networks consist of a variable number of sensors and vehicles that are deployed to perform collaborative monitoring tasks over a given area. In this thesis, we have made a detailed survey of different research work on underwater sensor network. Furthermore, we provide our research overview and comparative study in a table format. 52 pp. Englisch. Neu. Artikel-Nr.: 9786139969005.

Buch. Neuware - The Tenth Round Table on Law and Semiotics was the first Round Table 'on the Road' in Amherst and it celebrates a decade of semiotic scholarship on law. This volume is a report from that gathering and reflects its general focus as well as the specific theme - the context of cultures, identity, immigration and their literatures. A number of other crosscurrents - such as the meaning of semiotics and the reach of our endeavor, the uses of history and analytic techniques, and creative play with love and humor - will be evident. Perhaps the ongoing interest in what semiotics is will turn out to be the characteristic feature of this volume. Newcomers want to know what they are getting into and veterans are generally happy with new blood. These orientations are all evident. The result, evident in the diversity of papers, is another thematic current - how far one can stray and still be part of the community. 263 pp. Englisch. Neu. Artikel-Nr.: 9780820430201.

Hardcover. XII 254 p., incl. 1 table, 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503507712. This volume contains the proceedings of two gatherings held in 1999: a symposium on medieval literacy, Charters: the Development of Writing in Medieval Society held on 29 April 1999 in Utrecht, and three consecutive sessions on Charters and the Use of the Written Word during the International Medieval Congress at Leeds on 12 July 1999. The subject of these gatherings was the development of writing in medieval society. There have been periods of growth and of decrease in the quantity of writing produced in the medieval centuries. The present volume is concerned rather with qualitative developments. Which developments can be distinguished in the roles played by writing in medieval societies? In which fields was writing used, and by whom? Why did these changes take place? When attempting to answer these questions, the scholar confronts basic questions about the sources at ones disposal. Why were documents written? Why were they preserved and in what form? As a consequence, the contributions are clearly source-oriented. Charters, the sources to which most attention is devoted, have been continuously present throughout the Middle Ages. Moreover, they had an impact on most layers of society. The auxiliary science of diplomatics has helped scholars understand many historical problems; in this volume it is applied to the study of writing and the uses of writing. 0 g. Artikel-Nr.: 44823.
[Boston, 1912]. Broadside. 15½ x 8 inches. Printed all in red. Verso with old scrapbook mounting remnants; tiny small closed tear, almost imperceptible, recto. Robert Charles Benchley (1889-1989) honed and developed his skills as a humorist and actor while at Harvard (Class of 1912). Benchley was an active, and by all accounts, a very entertaining student. He participated with the Harvard Advocate and the Harvard Lampoon, serving as art editor for the latter. Theatrically, he performed in various productions for Harvard's Hasty Pudding Club. On April 26, 1912 at the Hotel Somerset, the Harvard Club of Boston presented an evening of entertainment. Under the evening's third segment of activities, Benchley provided the opening act: "The Marvelous Child", described on this broadside as being an entertainment that "Shows what a Game Chicken can do in the Egg." The Harvard Alumni Bulletin described the night: "About 500 members of the Harvard Club of Boston attended the smoker, concert, and vaudeville entertainment . The entertainment was furnished by R.C. Benchley, M.E. Crumpacker, J. Ralph Bunker, Floyd J. Neale, Pliny Jewell, and Joseph S. Seabird. Malcolm Lang conducted the orchestra." With his name cited first, Benchley's star was clearly rising in his senior year at Harvard. Benchley's act was followed by M. Crumpacker's "The Wolverine Wizard" which was a combination of "African Antics" and "Voodoo Vaudeville." The evening was convivial. "Rules" of the gathering insisted that guests socialize with individuals with whom they had never met. Cigars were to be smoked freely and attendees were encouraged to pretend to be interested in the evening's spectacle whether they were or were not. The text of the broadside concludes with a statement that reinforces this happy bit of time and enjoyment: "Don't Go Home Unless You Want To." An exceptionally early Benchley rarity from the future Algonquin Round Table wit. Benchley would publish his first book Of All Things! nine years later in 1921. Ref. Whether at the family home in Wales or when we spend holidays in the small hilltop village we are from in northern Italy, we have always heard Dad say that 'la tavola' (the table) is the central focus of our lives. It's where we cook, eat and socialise as a family.' Michela, Emanuela and Romina Chiappa grew up in Wales in the heart of a close-knit Italian community where food was always at the centre of family and social gatherings. Whether searching for porcini in the hills near their parents' home, or making pasta for Christmas Eve with the whole family, to sharing food at the annual Welsh-Italian summer picnic, the three sisters have been immersed in the Italian way of cooking all their lives. In their first cookbook they share their cherished family recipes, including all the pasta dishes recently seen in their Channel 4 series Simply Italian. From snacks, soups and salads, to mains, side dishes and desserts, Simply Italian brings you good, simple, fresh Italian food. Michela works as an agent in a sports management company, as well running a coffee and pizza café in Cardiff with her husband. Of the sisters, she's the risotto expert and also loves to make pasta sauces. Romina works for a luxury fashion brand is London, and loves to bake for friends and family. Emanuela runs an online business selling bespoke homemade gifts for children, and works as a nanny. She loves to cook time-consuming meals and entertain large groups. 304 pp. Englisch. Neu.
