Hardcover. Original Cloth. 8vo. 240 pages. 25 cm. First U. S. Edition. Published in conjuction with the film The Last Days. Originally published: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1999. Profusely illustrated, with an epilogue by Randolph L. Braham. Presented by Steven Spielberg and Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation; with an introduction by David Cesarani; historical consultants, Michael Berenbaum, Randolph Braham. "The German plan for annihilation of the Jews-called the 'Final Solution'-set the goal that not a single survivor would be left to bear witness to the events. Fifty years later, Steven Spielberg established Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation to record the testimony of as many survivors as possible. From the ashes of the Holocaust these voices now emerge to share their stories and to represent the nearly six million Jews who did not survive. Survivors and liberators share what they experienced in gripping, firsthand testimony. Archival photographs document history, and powerful color images chronicle the survivors' emotional return to the places of their pasts: from homes unseen for fifty years to the ghettos and concentration camps of their imprisonment. Top scholars have been brought together to share their insights into one of humanity's darkest chapters. These elements are poignantly synthesized in The Last Days as a warning for all mankind. Lapped by incessant, white-foamed, crested waves, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the centre of the Bay of Bengal. These idyllic islands in the sun are fringed with dazzling beaches of white sand with richly-clad forests forming a backdrop, while colourful beds of coral reefs shimmer through the clear blue an turquoise sea water. Some of the most exotic flora and fauna are to be found on the 321 islands forming this archipelago. There are trees which have yellow hibiscus-like flowers which blossom only at night, other which bear huge yet delicate pale-pink flowers sitting on a bed of glossy leaves. The rarest of the rare birds, the Megapode, is to be found in the Great Nicobar island. Of the original inhabitants of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, only six aboriginal tribes have survived. One of these, the Andamanese, have to this day not learnt how to make fire. The Onges, cook everything by putting it under the fire rather than over it. The Sentinelese shoot poison arrows at anyone approaching Sentinel Island, while the Jarawas, armed with bows and arrows, disappear into the dense jungles when strangers appear. The Nicobarese, who have a keen sense of smell, can distinguish people from different places by their 'odour'. The Shompens who live in the thick forests of Great Nicobar, being both shy and suspicious, have rejected all contact with the outside world. Andaman & Nicobar: Islands in the Sun is a pioneering attempt at discovering these islands. Colourful pictures and a lucidly written text bring to life an exotic world. 102 pp., num. color figs, hc 4. Artikel-Nr.: W23037.

Nelson McCoy and W. F. McCoy, his uncle. Using the most primitive of methods and materials, they none the less produced stoneware crocks and jars in such quantities that they not only supplied the local market, but transported loads of ware down the river as well. On his boat in addition to his pottery, he carried a small stock of items such as the isolated farm wives were apt to have need of. During one such journey, McCoy's raft hit a sand bar in the Mississippi River and capsized . . . everything was lost! But when the river was more successfully executed, he found no difficulty in selling his merchandise. Lotz and Sons, of New Orleans, who continued in business there for over a century, were always eager to buy McCoy Pottery! His mission completed, McCoy would sell his raft, and with some of his earnings, book passage back up the river to his home. The hardships endured by those early potters are hard for us who have been nurtured in an era of mechanization to even imagine. Stoneware clays required a substantial kiln due to the high temperatures necessary for firing. Fire wood had to be cut, clay had to be dug and processed . molds had to be made, and machinery fashioned by hand. The business of marketing could begin only after Spring thaws. From October until late April, roads were impassable. But inside the pottery, work was in full swing, stockpiling a supply of ware for later delivery. Although top quality stoneware clay was theirs for the digging, it required a certain amount of processing to make it of a uniform consistency. Lumps were ground up, pebbles and foreign objects removed, and enough water added to form a pliable, workable material. After the ware was formed by hand turning or jiggering on the wheel, it was set on long boards to dry, then transferred to the kiln for firing. The kilns were fired with cord wood, and the smell of wood smoke clinging to his clothing often served to identify a man as a potter! The glaze was produced either by an application of slip clay, which when fired melted to form a smooth, glossy surface, or simply by common salt, which was heated and thrown into the kiln at maximum temperature. The salt would instantly form a vapor that would adhere to the stoneware, leaving a smooth, grey-white surface. This salt glazed stoneware was often decorated by hand with cobalt - one of the few minerals capable of withstanding the intense heat of the kiln. Streaks and daubs of color and simple floral outlines were used, but the most popular motif was the bird - hence the name "Blue Bird" pottery. We don't know how long this pottery continued to produce, nor how much of this early stoneware survived. More than likely most of it was not marked . . . the rare jars that were, bear these stenciled letters: W. F. McCoy, Wholesale dealer in stoneware, Zanesville, Ohio, 1848. (See page 49) W. Nelson McCoy was later elected mayor of Zanesville, and is reported to have been the first Odd Fellow in the city. Softcover, 15,5 x 23 cm, 168 pages, full color, English, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9783899554311. The world is opening up more and more. Progressive globalisation, the continuous fall of national borders and trade barriers and relaxed copyright rules are clear evidence. For that very reason, however, a countermovement is spreading that starts where the opening process reaches its limits and tips over into an actual threat for many people. Not only in the barriers built between the USA and Mexico or the radical action taken against online sharing platforms, but also the increase in gated communities or the rapid growth of neopopulist protest parties bear witness to that. Traditional defence strategies such as barrier-building or counterattack are, however, inadequate long-term guarantees of security and prosperity. In fact, they even jeopardise these goals. 0 g.
