A remarkably well-preserved crêpe paper book collection of Japanese fairy tales translated into Spanish. Hasegawa published two Spanish sets each of ten volumes. This set titled "Leyendas y Narraciones Japonesas" contains following works: 1. La Boda De los Ratones; 2. La Sierpe de Ocho Cabezas; 3. La Liebre de Inaba; 4. El Espejo de Matsuyama; 5. La Medusa Candida; 6. El Principe Brillante; 7. La Olla Mágica; 8. Sippeitaro; 9. El Brazo del Ogro; 10. La Cascada Maravillosa.Small 18mo (15.2 x 10.3 cm). Fukuro-toji bound, spine covered, silk ties. Each book contains about 9 -11 lvs including covers. Beautifully illustrated with woodcuts throughout. As issued, kept in its original paper box, original tissue wraps preserved (two sets). A rare set, unique in mint condition (first volume has a very light mark from a paper band holding the books together). Takejirõ Hasegawa (1853-1938) was a Tokyo-based publisher who specialised in Japanese books translated into European languages. He employed renowned foreign residents as translators and noted Japanese artists as illustrators. Gonzalo Jiménez de la Espada (1874-1938), a Spanish orientalist and teacher who resided in Tokyo between 1907 and 1917.

Richly illustrated throughout, of which many in bright colours paper. Original silk-covered boards, with colour illustration on upper cover, somewhat rubbed along edges. Front hinge partly split. Mary Unger, America-born who married Alfred Unger and moved to Yokohama in 1900. Alfred Unger had purchased the Boehmer Nursery in Yokohama in 1890 from it's founder Louis Boehmer. The company was established in 1882 and was the first nursery to export plants to Europe and America. At the time of Unger's takeover, another nursery, the Yokohama Nursery Company, had been formed. They produced lavish catalogues with full-colour illustrations of plants. To compete, Alfred Unger turned to the renowned publisher Takejiro Hasegawa to help him develop a comparable product with woodcut illustrations in combination with text written by his wife, Mary. This work, The Favourite Flowers of Japan, was a successful result of their collaboration. This is a rare, wonderful copy of a beautiful publication. Deals with twenty-four different kinds of flowers and plants. Including plum, peach and cherry blossoms, camellias, magnolias, lotus, chrysanthemum, orchids, iris, bamboo and it's especially known for the bonsai or "dwarf tree" illustrations. The book was first published in 1901. The title states second edition but we are unsure about this. Checking the collation with Baxley's copy we think it might be a reissue of the second edition or perhaps the third edition. (see Baxley). The first two editions have a two-page publication list at end which is not present in our copy but doesn't seem to be missing.At end it says: "Please turn over for a an Abridged List of [publications]" - which is not present in our copy - but it doesn't seem to be missing. Our copy is in its original state which is unusual since the binding is weak.

Tokyo, Hasegawa Takejiro, Meiji 32 [i.e. Edwards (1864-1936), a free-lance journalist and traveller, came to Japan in 1898 ?for a six-month assignment to write articles on Japanese theatre for two British magazines, the Sketch and the Studio.? (Sharf: Takejiro Hasegawa (1994), p. 41). The present work takes a humerous look at ex-patriate life in Japan: The Missionary at Karuizawa, the Minister at Chiuzenji, the Globe-trotter at Kamakura, the Professor in Nirvana etc. Some of the characters appear to have been based on a real resident of Japan. ?1. The Merchant at Yokohama. Air: 'When I first put this uniform on' (Sullivan): When I first came to live in Japan/ My duty was simple and plain/ To dazzle the nation with civilization/ Implying more money than brain/ In a mansion as big as the Bluff/ I had servants and horses enough/ while the native possessions/ Outside the concessions/ Appeared to me very poor stuff.? Richly illustrated in color and provided with three color prints on crepe paper. 1st edition. Somewhat worn on the edges. Name written in the first page ('C. v.d. Woude', a relative by marriage of Huib van Krimpen). One of Takejiro Hasegawa's more sumptuous crepe paper releases for the European and American markets. Extraordinarily beautiful, often moving and serene prints that show Japanese life. (There exists also a later reprint by another publisher (Nishinomiya), with its mark on the lower cover.).

First and only edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the first page to "Mr William Abbs, from Mrs Patton, 1909". This is a beautiful example of the work of the publisher Takejiro Hasegawa, whose signature crepe paper books remain highly prized today. Institutional records note only one copy of Japanese Topsyturvy-Dom in the UK (University of Cambridge), with copies correspondingly scarce in commerce. Hasegawa (1853-1938) began his publishing business in 1884, specialising in attractive English-language books made using crepe paper. Their appeal to foreign audiences lay in Hasegawa's ingenious combination of Western book culture - for example reading left to right - with seemingly exotic Japanese elements such as woodblock printing and fine paper. "The crepe paper editions were especially prized by Hasegawa's foreign clientele as being uniquely Japanese, a feature which, together with their superior quality woodblock-print illustrations, elevated them to a collectable art form. The books can be seen in parallel with the international Arts and Crafts movement, which was simultaneously occurring on both sides of the Atlantic and epitomised in the revival of the art of the book as a symbol of idealised craftsmanship" (O'Connell, p. 61). In Japanese Topsyturvy-Dom, Emily Sophia Patton (1831-1912) describes the differences between Japanese and Western culture and customs, all the while gently satirising those Europeans who proclaim the superiority of the Western way of life. For example, discussing "Food, and Table Etiquette", she writes that, "It is also taken as a delicate compliment to the host, and a recognition of the good cheer he has provided, if the guest eructate [sic] audibly during the repast; and it is not considered any evidence of ill-breeding, if the acts of mastication and drinking are performed noisily, and not silently as with us" (p. 13). The British-born Patton was a naturalized Australian musician who introduced the Tonic Sol-fa sight-singing method into Japan and China through her successful singing conservatories. Described as one of the 19th century's "outstanding figures in music education" (Stevens, p. 40), she was also an experienced author and traveller, journeying to remote areas of Japan and visiting several cities in China. "As an author, a journalist and a social chronicler, she provided valuable insights - from a European perspective - into the life, customs and events in Japan, China and other neighbouring countries at that time" (ibid., pp. 47-48). 12mo. 66 leaves. Printed on double leaves of crepe paper in Japanese style. Woodblock illustrations by Suzuki Kason. Bramhall was an author of children's verses written in and usually set in Japan. Takejiro Hasegawa had a long association with Western missionaries and Westerners in Tokyo. It is through this association that he started printing woodblock illustrated books in the Western languages. OCLC lists 24 copies worldwide. Of the outer cover, which is crepe like the pages, only the front cover remains, detached and very frayed with some tears and portions missing. Interior in very good condition. (SPEC-1-14).

Innen mit altem Widmungsvermerk und altem Buchzeichen *Zorn *auf dem Innendeckel vorn, Titelblatt und 1. Blatt zum rechten Außenrand hin stärker angeknickt, ansonsten von guter Innenerhaltung. One son eventually forgets to return to the gravesite, while the other continues to remember and leave flowers. Eventually he is rewarded with good fortune, wealth, and his father's protective spirit. Text in English. Wrappers sunned, with a few small closed tears and stains. Interior with a few sporadic light water stains throughout. Wrappers in good, interior in very good- condition overall.
