Zustand: Como nuevo. The first fully-fledged example of revenge tragedy, the genre that became so influential in later Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, The Spanish Tragedy (1589) occupies a very special place in the history of English Renaissance drama. Hieronimo, Knight-Marshal of Spain during its war with Portugal, fails to obtain justice when his son is murdered for courting Bel-Imperia, the Duke of Castile's daughter, and decides to take justice into his own hands. In a scene replete with meta-theatrical implications, Hieronimo and Bel-Imperia stage a playlet with Portuguese and Spanish nobles as actors, stabbing them with real 'fake' daggers before they kill themselves. This edition, which appends the scenes that were added in 1602, discusses Elizabethan attitudes to revenge, the Senecan features of the play and the significance of the Anglo-Spanish conflict in the 1580s. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. On 16 May 1811 a combined British, Portuguese and Spanish force commanded by the British general Beresford met the French army under Soult at Albuera in southern Spain. What followed was one of the bloodiest and most controversial battles of the Peninsular War. Yet despite the battle's significance in the wider campaign to expel Napoleon's armies from Spain, the story of Albuera has rarely received the coverage accorded to other battles of the war. In this ground-breaking book, Michael Oliver and Richard Partridge seek to set the historical record straight. They examine the carnage of Albuera in unprecedented detail, and they give a lucid account of the circumstances and the conflicting allied and French strategies that gave rise to this awful confrontation. They also offer vivid portraits of the personalities and military skills of the notable commanders who took part. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Zustand: Muy bueno. Wellington's Peninsular War provides a concise and comprehensive account that can be enjoyed by both professional and amateur historians and which includes details of the battlefields as they are today and how to find and explore them. The Peninsular War (1808-1841) was part of the twenty year struggle against Napoleon Bonaparte that involved campaigns in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, the West Indies, South America and South Africa and until 1914 was known as 'The Great War'. The author has presented a balanced picture of the whole campaign and gives due credit to the Spanish and Portuguese efforts without which victory would not have been possible. Arranged in sections, the author starts with a review of the whole war and the background to it and follows with a complete chronological account of the war year by year. Finally a chapter on each of the major battles includes maps and photographs of the battlefields, orders of battle and instructions on how to find the battlefield today and what to see there. The maps show the ground as it was at the time but also include modern features to identify where the fighting took place enabling the reader to stand where Wellington would have stood when surveying the battlefield. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Though pressed many times to write about his battles and campaigns, the Duke of Wellington always replied that people should refer to his published despatches, and he refused to add further to his official correspondence, famously remarking that: The history of a battle, is not unlike the history of a ball. Some individuals may recollect all the little events of which the great result is the battle won or lost, but no individual can recollect the order in which, or the exact moment at which, they occurred, which makes all the difference as to their value or importance.' Yet Wellington did, in effect, write a history of the Peninsular War in the form of four lengthy memoranda, summarising the conduct of the war in 1809, 1810 and 1811 respectively. These lengthy accounts demonstrate Wellington's unmatched appreciation of the nature of the war in Spain and Portugal, and relate to the operations of the French and Spanish forces as well as the Anglo-Portuguese army under his command. Unlike personal diaries or journals written by individual soldiers, with their inevitably limited knowledge, Wellington was in an unparalleled position to provide a comprehensive overview of the war. Equally, the memoranda were written as the war unfolded, not tainted with the knowledge of hindsight, providing a unique contemporaneous commentary. Brought together by renowned historian Stuart Reid with reports and key despatches from the other years of the campaign, the result is the story of the Peninsular War told through the writings of the man who knew and understood the conflict in Iberia better than any other. These memoranda and despatches have never been published before in a single connected narrative. Therefore, Wellington's History of the Peninsular War 1808-1814 offers a uniquely accessible perspective on the conflict in the own words of Britain's greatest general. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - NEW ENTRY IN THE BEST-SELLING RING OF FIRE SERIES FROM NEBULA AND DRAGON AWARD NOMINEE CHARLES E. GANNON AND ROBERT E. WATERSDomingos Fernandes Calabar started out as a military advisor for the Portuguese in Brazil. But to his superiors, he was still nothing more than a mameluco, a man of mixed blood. Until, that is, the Dutch arrived and he switched sides. Then the Portuguese had a new label for him: "traitorous dog." But when Dutch admiral Maarten Tromp arrives, having barely survived the disastrous Battle of Dunkirk, Calabar's job changes again. Now he has to help engineer a swift Dutch exodus to a safer place before word of Tromp's defeat reaches Spanish ears. Partnered with the Sephardic pirate Moses Cohen Henriques Eanes, the two aid the battered Dutch fleet by striking at the Portuguese and Spanish, both on land and sea. Until, that is, Calabar learns that bitter personal enemies have grabbed his family, put them in chains, and sold them to a slaveship bound for the Spanish Main. Calabar must now choose: continue to help the Dutch, or save his wife and children Tromp and other strong allies want to put an end to slavery, too, but their strategies and timetable are measured in months and years. Calabar doesn't have that kind of time and can't rely on their methods. The struggle to recover his family, and to free the millions more suffering in shackles, is one he must win in his own way and on his own terms. Because ultimately, this is not just Calabar's fight. This is Calabar's war. About 1636: Calabar's War: ". . . dives into the story of . . . Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A wonderfully concise and very readable history of Portugal, perfect for travellers This brief yet comprehensive history begins with the Stone Age and the Roman era; continues to the Visigoths, the development of Christian Portugal and the expulsion of the Moors; on to Spanish rule from the sixteenth century, and its collapse. There is a strong focus on Portugal's global impact, particularly during the age of European exploration and expansion, and on how the world transformed Portugal: the first of the Atlantic empires, and still a major empire in the 1820s, retaining territories in Africa until the 1970s and in Asia until as recently as the 1990s. Black examines the nineteenth-century French invasion, the Peninsular War, Brazilian independence, successive revolutions and the end of the monarchy; he shows how Republican Portugal gave way to the dictatorship of Salazar, which was toppled in turn by the Carnation Revolution of 1974. The book also covers contemporary history, from the leadership of Soares to the recent fiscal crisis. Throughout, Black considers the character of the country's principal regions, including the Azores, Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands; he describes key national sites, such as the Baroque palaces at Mafra, Pombal and elsewhere; and explores Portuguese food, wine and arts. 256 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Miguel Hernández is, along with Antonio Machado, Juan Ramón Jiménez, and Federico García Lorca, one of the greatest Spanish poets of the twentieth century. This volume spans the whole of Hernández's brief writing life, and includes his most celebrated poems, from the early lyrics written in traditional forms, such as the moving elegy Hernández wrote to his friend and mentor Ramon Sijé (one of the most famous elegies ever written in the Spanish language), to the spiritual eroticism of his love poems, and the heart-wrenching, luminous lines written in the trenches of war. Also included in this edition are tributes to Hernández by Federico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda (interviewed by Robert Bly), Rafael Alberti, and Vicente Aleixandre. Pastoral nature, love, and war are recurring themes in Hernández's poetry, his words a dazzling reminder that force can never defeat spirit, that courage is its own reward. 128 pp. Englisch.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Peninsular War has been extensively studied by British historians for decades, even centuries, but the Spanish contribution to the conflict, which was fundamental to the defeat of Napoleon's armies, has been largely relegated to minor role. This book is an attempt to rebalance our understanding of the campaign in Iberia, written by a Spanish historian and translated into English for the first time. The book does not attempt to minimise the problems the Spanish experienced nor the catastrophic defeats suffered by the Spanish Army, but the reasons for these setbacks are viewed and analysed from the Spanish viewpoint. With the finest elements of the Spanish Army serving with the French forces in Denmark, Spain was virtually undefended when Napoleon's armies marched into the Iberian Peninsula. New armies had to be raised virtually from scratch to fight the invader in a country where, as the Duke of Wellington remarked, small armies were beaten and large armies starved. The logistical and political difficulties faced by the Spaniards are fully explored and explained. It is the big battles, nevertheless, which receive the most attention; both the great battles such as Tudela and Oca a and the surprising victory at Bail n, and the smaller, lesser-known combats which took place across the Peninsula. The defeats, even destruction, of their armies, did not deter the Spaniards; in fact quite the contrary. Their cities, most notably Zaragoza, defied Napoleon's legions for months in some of the most savage fighting of any conflict as their streets were turned to rubble. Across the country, the ordinary citizens took up arms, attacking isolated French outposts and capturing enemy messengers and patrols - and the term guerrilla warfare came into being. Napoleon's marshals had never encountered such fanaticism and Spain became a posting dreaded by the French soldiers. As the war progressed, the Spanish armies became strong enough to win several battles, contributing decisively to the defeat of Napoleon in conjunction with the magnificent achievements of Sir Arthur Wellesley and his Anglo-Portuguese army. This unique book will help the British reader understand the Spanish vision of the war, dismantling some false myths and exposing the reality of a country with an indomitable spirit that never accepted the new order that Napoleon tried to impose. It is the book that has been missing from the literature of the Peninsular War for far too long. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. When the book was published it caused a sensation in the literary world.Drawing on the traditional Spanish ballad form, Lorca described his Romancero Gitano as 'the poem of Andalucía.A book that hardly expresses visible Andalusia at all, but where hidden Andalucía trembles'.Seeking to relate the nature of his proud and troubled region of Spain, he drew on a traditional gypsy form; yet the homely, unpretentious style of these poems barely disguises the undercurrents of conflicted identity never far from Lorca's work.

Originalbroschur / Paperback. -- Stent, bypass, screening Since the end of World War II, English has reigned supreme over the language of medicine. But this has not always been the case. For example, many words relating to infectious diseases come from German. French, for its part, has also strongly influenced the vocabulary of obstetrics and cardiology. -- What is the state of health of all these medical languages today? How is French fighting for its survival? What does Spanish suffer from? What does Brazilian Portuguese do to thrive? What remedies has Italian prescribed? Is German really moribund? -- This book offers a thorough analysis of the main medical languages of today. Six authors trace their history from their common Greco-Latin origin and examine them in relation to the anglicization from which they all suffer to various degrees. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband berieben, sonst sehr gut / binding rubbed, otherwise very good. - INTRODUCTION The Short-title Catalogue of Books printed in Spain and of Spanish Books printed elsewhere in Europe before 1601 now in the British Museum was the first of the Library's series of short-title catalogues of books in foreign languages of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Published in 1921, it bears on the titlepage the name of the compiler, Henry Thomas, D.Litt., and it has a prefatory note by the Principal Keeper, Alfred W. Pollard, dated 22 February 1921. This was followed by the French short-title catalogue in 1924, in which the compilers (Henry Thomas, assisted by A. F. Johnson and A. G. MacFarlane) are no longer named on the titlepage. Then came Thomas's Portuguese short-title catalogue in 1940 and the same author's Spanish-American list in 1944. After the Second World War the series was resumed with the Italian short-title catalogue in 1958 (with a Supplement in 1986), the German in 1962, and the Netherlands and Belgium in 1965. The first two catalogues of the series, Spanish and French, were decidedly experimental and hurried productions, so that no attempt was made either to include an index of printers and publishers or to identify the printers or place of printing of books which bear no imprints or colophons. In subsequent years, Sir Henry Thomas (he was knighted in 1946 and died in 1952), despite his arduous administrative burdens during the Second World War, culminating in his appointment as Principal Keeper of Printed Books from 1943 until his retirement in 1947, continued incessantly his researches on Spanish bibliography, and made numerous contributions to the subject in the form of articles and facsimile reprints of rare items accompanied by bibliographical introductions. In 1971 the British Museum published part X of its Catalogue of books printed in the XVth century now in the British Museum, in which full descriptions are given of all the Library's Spanish and Portuguese incunabula. This has enabled the present catalogue to dispense with those Haebler numbers which Thomas gave them in 1921 for the Spanish incunabula. But even between 1971 and 1985 the British Museum (the British Library since 1973) has acquired twelve more Spanish incunabula, including the only fifteenth-century imprint from Tortosa and the earliest dated books printed in Seville, Valencia and Saragossa. These came mostly from the renowned Broxbourne Library of the late Albert Ehrman. In 1978 Cambridge University Press published F. J. Norton's monumental work A descriptive catalogue of printing in Spain and Portugal 15011520, in which detailed descriptions of 1369 Spanish and 43 Portuguese editions of those years are provided. References to Norton numbers are given throughout the present catalogue for the British Library's holdings. It may be said therefore that the bibliography of printing in Spain and Portugal from circa 1470 to 1520 has now been thoroughly covered, and although the British Library still owns copies of far fewer than half of these totals, there can be very few Iberian presses of the period which are not represented in its collections. Every effort has been made to identify the printers of all those books in the British Library which were produced in Spain or in Spanish without imprint, many of these being unique copies as far as is known; and every effort has also been made to date them as accurately as possible. Full indexes have been provided of printers and booksellers, and there are also separate indexes of towns, both within and outside Spain. Signature collations and certain explanatory footnotes have been added only in those cases where it was felt that such information would help the reader to identify the edition of the copy in hand, or else to justify the ascription made to a particular town or printer. The rules of cataloguing in the British Library, particularly with regard to anonymous books, have been in recent years considerably modified. The result is that in the present catalogue, as in the General Catalogue, a number of works will no longer be found under the same headings as they were in 1921, since these headings are now obsolete. For instance, a work entitled 'Relación de las cosas de España' will now be found under 'Relación' if it has no author, not under 'Spain.Appendix'; and such headings as Dictionaries' and 'Ephemerides' have been abolished. Certain well-known anonymous works of literature, however, especially chivalresque romances, will still be found under their accepted and familiar headings. Buch. Zustand: Neu.

The Portuguese had sailed the ocean blue, and the Spanish were feverishly exploring the Pacific. But there was still much to be discovered in the Old World. So when the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II issued a call for Christians to cross the ocean to evangelize the Native Americans, the Jesuitsa religious order of priestswere the perfect choice. The Jesuits set sail from Spain in 1542 with a group of Spanish soldiers and a group of Native Americans. The journey was treacherous and the group was beset by disease, but they eventually made it to the New World. In 1565, they founded the first Jesuit mission in North Americaon the banks of the Saint Lawrence River in present-day Quebec. It was there; 8vo; 216 pages.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - WINNER OF THE WOLFSON HISTORY PRIZE 2020A SUNDAY TIMES, FINANCIAL TIMES, THE TIMES AND BBC HISTORY MAGAZINE BOOK OF THE YEARFor most of human history, the seas and oceans have been the main means of long-distance trade and communication between peoples - for the spread of ideas and religion as well as commerce. This book traces the history of human movement and interaction around and across the world's greatest bodies of water, charting our relationship with the oceans from the time of the first voyagers. David Abulafia begins with the earliest of seafaring societies - the Polynesians of the Pacific, the possessors of intuitive navigational skills long before the invention of the compass, who by the first century were trading between their far-flung islands. By the seventh century, trading routes stretched from the coasts of Arabia and Africa to southern China and Japan, bringing together the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific and linking half the world through the international spice trade. In the Atlantic, centuries before the little kingdom of Portugal carved out its powerful, seaborne empire, many peoples sought new lands across the sea - the Bretons, the Frisians and, most notably, the Vikings, now known to be the first Europeans to reach North America. As Portuguese supremacy dwindled in the late sixteenth century, the Spanish, the Dutch and then the British each successively ruled the waves.Following merchants, explorers, pirates, cartographers and travellers in their quests for spices, gold, ivory, slaves, lands for settlement and knowledge of what lay beyond, Abulafia has created an extraordinary narrative of humanity and the oceans. From the earliest forays of peoples in hand-hewn canoes through uncharted waters to the routes now taken daily by supertankers in their thousands, The Boundless Sea shows how maritime networks came to form a continuum of interaction and interconnection across the globe: 90 per cent of global trade is still conducted by sea. This is history of the grandest scale and scope, and from a bracingly different perspective - not, as in most global histories, from the land, but from the boundless seas.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This study details the preparation, planning and execution of the invasion of Portugal in 1810 by the French Armée de Portugal under Marshal Massena, and the defensive measures taken by the British and their Portuguese and Spanish allies. It also covers the practice of all armies involved during this campaign, working from original sources. These sources provide a different interpretation of some key aspects of the campaign to those which are generally accepted. The work focusses on the strategic, operational, and tactical planning undertaken by both sides in preparation for the invasion, and the actual progress of the campaign. A narrative of the battles and sieges, with analysis at the tactical-level, also brings out the differences in planning and intelligence gathering. This particular campaign is important as it has attracted little attention from historians, and was crucial as a turning point in the Peninsular War. This was the last time that Portugal was invaded by the French during the Peninsular War, and the allies' handling of the campaign contrasted sharply with that of the French. Its success also gave Wellington political security against the 'croakers' back in England. The research demonstrates the difficulties both armies had in prosecuting their plans during the campaign, and highlights the stark differences in the approach taken by each commander.

  • Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An often neglected aspect of Marlborough¿s war is its crucial campaign in Spain and Portugal, also known as the First Peninsula War of 1702¿1712. Whilst this campaign was critical to the outcome of the war, relatively little information is available about it or the army that fought it. This work not only provides a detailed look at the army that fought the Spanish and Portuguese campaigns of Marlborough¿s war, but it also offers an insight into the course of the war in Iberia. It aims to provide more detail and understanding of a relatively little known part of a war that helped to shape and strengthened Britain¿s position amongst the main European players. Several chapters look at the national contingents that made up the confederate armies fighting in Spain and Portugal. The work concentrates not only on the reasonably well known British contribution but also on the equally important role of the less well known Austrian, Dutch, Palatine, Portuguese and Spanish contingents. These chapters provide general information about the units involved, their organisation, tactics and other relevant detail. In other chapters the work concentrates in detail on the developments in the Spanish and Portuguese campaigns in each year of the war. Details of the composition of the armies in each campaign, their activities and battles, the size of the units, if known, in each year are provided. Attention is paid not only to the most famous engagement at Almanza but also to the other battles and skirmishes of the Iberian campaigns. The book provides a complete guide to the forces fighting in Marlborough¿s armies in Iberia. It will be a valuable addition to the library of both the casual reader and the serious history student with interest in this important part of British and European history. It not only offers for the first time an overview of all the contributions to the war effort in Iberia, but also presents the reader with a valuable contrast not only to Marlborough¿s campaigns of the time, but also perhaps to Wellington¿s later campaign.
