Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Established in 1917 to train Royal Flying Corps aircrew, during WWI Duxford was also the base for two United States Aero Squadrons, 137 and 159, and by the end was a mobilisation airfield for three DH9 day bomber squadrons. During the 1920s and 30s, expansion continued apace, with three fighter squadrons, 19, 29 and 111, and the presence of many illustrious names, including Harry Broadhurst, Johnny Kent and Frank Whittle. The first aerodrome in Fighter Command to receive the Spitfire (in August 1938), Duxford rose to supreme prominence during the early part of the Second World War. Part of 12 Group detailed to protect the industrial midlands and north east Britain, the base's role during the Battle of Britain was mired in controversy due to the 'Big Wing' tactics of Douglas Bader and Trafford Leigh-Mallory. From October 1942 to the end of the war, Duxford was essentially an American base for, variously, the 8th Air Force, 357th and 78th Fighter Groups. Postwar the RAF operated jets from the station until 1961 when the future was put on hold. Managing to avoid the ignominy of becoming a prison or sports complex, the Imperial War Museum finally came to the rescue making Duxford into today's premier international air museum. Richard Smith's research has led him to numerous previously unpublished collections from which he has unearthed some marvellous images of historical significance. This book is a must for the collector, historian or veteran of the times. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"Here is a character composed of truth, sincerity and courage. He hates deceit and detests a lie. But this Jeffersonian Democrat possesses a rarer integrity which we call intellectual integrity. Appointed to the Banking and Currency Committee in 1904, the supreme opportunity soon came to him to be the chief architect of the Federal Reserve System. He became the great post-WWI Secretary of the treasury and won Woodrow Wilson's intimacy, trust and praise. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - AD 406. Abandoned by friends and hounded by enemies, Roman cavalry commander Marcus Flavius Victor and a small band of loyal warriors know that the time has come to leave an increasingly fractured Britannia.Their journey takes them across the bleak, pirate-infested seas of the Mare Germanicum to Saxonia and on into the dark heart of barbarism. It seems the Britons' only salvation lies with an old comrade, General Stilicho - based far to the east but still within the sanctuary of the Empire. But the general has troubles of his own: his influence with the Emperor Honorius is waning, and a great warrior people are on the march - for Radagaisus, king of the Ostrogoths, has promised his subjects all the riches of Italia, and they will leave a sea of Roman bones in their wake. But as Marcus and his companions battle their way towards what they hope will a safe haven of sorts, they stumble across a secret which could decide the fate of the Empire. But who can they really trust, and can Marcus reach Stilicho in time - because his every step is dogged by a son who wants him dead.Set during the desperate twilight years of Rome's once all-powerful empire, The Barbarian is the action-packed and thrillingly authentic new historical novel from one of the genre's very best. 351 pp. Englisch.

First Edition. Cloth with gilt decorated elephant and donkey emblems of the Republican and Democratic Parties. Dust jacket with some wear and small tears on spine and upper edges. Contents near fine, jacket very good. Inscribed by Duncan to his friend the photo-editor John G Morris. "November 1969. For John - Happy Thanksgiving and Super Saludos - Dave". This is a superb photographic record of the 1968 Conventions. Near Fine/Very Good David Douglas Duncan John G. Morris (born in 1916) is probably the most celebrated living photo-editor. He worked with many of the finest photographers - Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith. As the London Picture Editor of "Life" during WWII, he was responsible for editing and publishing Capa's coverage of D-Day. Later, Morris became the Picture Editor of "Ladies Home Journal", Executive Editor of Magnum Photos, and Picture Editor of The New York Times. He still tours the world lecturing about photo-journalism "If it [a photo] has a message, the message has to come through. But, it should evoke something from the heart. It should pull at you. Not only should it inform you, it should hook you".

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - From the daring and critically-acclaimed master of historical fiction Conn Iggulden, SHIANG is the second book in the Empire of Salt, an epic fantasy series of spellbinding imagination . . . IF THESE STONES COULD SPEAK, THEY WOULD CALL FOR WAR.In Shiang, the young king rules without dissent. Mazer swordsmen stand watch on every corner, looking for the first sign of rebellion. This city is a place of quiet and slow dignity, like a man eating rice with a razor pressed against his throat. Yet with one sharp movement, order is overturned. The balance of centuries is undone in the sudden spill of blood - and in the darkness, something terrible returns to Shiang. Far to the west, four Shiang masters approach the city walls of Darien. The sword saint and his companions have crossed a continent to bring an old man home for punishment. They will not be denied, even if the whole city stands in their way. TWO ANCIENT CITIES. ONE FINAL WAR. 368 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Moving and inspired book . An evocative and deeply affecting requiem for what might have been.' - Douglas Smith, author of Rasputin and Former PeopleA World on Edge reveals Europe in 1918, left in ruins by World War I. But with the end of hostilities, a radical new start seems not only possible, but essential, even unavoidable. Unorthodox ideas light up the age like the comets that have recently passed overhead: new politics, new societies, new art and culture, new thinking. The struggle to determine the future has begun. The sculptor Käthe Kollwitz, whose son died in the war, was translating sorrow and loss into art. Ho Chi Minh was working as a dishwasher in Paris and dreaming of liberating Vietnam, his homeland. Captain Harry S. Truman was running a men's haberdashery in Kansas City, hardly expecting that he was about to go bankrupt - and later become president of the United States. Professor Moina Michael was about to invent the 'remembrance poppy', a symbol of sacrifice that will stand for generations to come. Meanwhile Virginia Woolf had just published her first book and was questioning whether that sacrifice was worth it, while the artist George Grosz was so revolted by the violence on the streets of Berlin that he decides everything is meaningless. For rulers and revolutionaries, a world of power and privilege was dying - while for others, a dream of overthrowing democracy was being born. With novelistic virtuosity, historian Daniel Schönpflug describes this watershed year as it was experienced on the ground - open ended, unfathomable, its outcome unclear. Told from the vantage points of people, famous and ordinary, good and evil, who lived through the turmoil and combining a multitude of acutely observed details, Schönpflug composes a brilliantly conceived panorama of a world suspended between enthusiasm and disappointment, and of a moment in which the window of opportunity was suddenly open, only to quickly close shut once again. 352 pp. Deutsch.
