Acco…unting for approximately one third of total world trade and including around 80 million people outside their home bases in complex supply and dependency networks, they seize seemingly endless economic power what has given way to strong opposition and causes fear amongst ordinary people who feel at the mercy of their power.In my paper I will try to clarify the relationship between MNCs and nation states and therefore answer the question what kind of forces drive MNCs, which objectives they have and which measures they take to reach their individual aims.The paper will start with the definition of MNCs (chapter 2) and their emergence. I will then refer theories of MNC evolution that are closely linked to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and patterns of labour division (chapter 3 and 4). The following chapter shall explore the power relationship between nation states and MNCs in general (chapter 5). The example of oil extraction through Royal Dutch Shell in the Nigeria's delta region will further illustrate the interdependencies especially many resource rich but underdeveloped or developing countries face and identify the sources of friction between government, state, peoples, NGOs and MNCs. The findings will be summarized and an outlook on possible future developments will be given in the last chapter (or Chapter 6).

INTRODUCTION : This study is an attempt to gain insights into the relationships between different regions in Cyprus during the Middle Bronze Age, using the decorative patterns on White Painted Pottery. Although largely independent of previous classifications of… the material the earlier studies and conclusions provide the broad background for this specific analysis. In this chapter the theoretical and methodological bases of the present study are discussed in relation to the general pattern of Cypriot prehistoric studies, and several problems of more general interest are considered. Despite the large scale but unorganised activities of di Cesnola and others earlier in the nineteenth cen- tury, the first real contribution toward a prehistory of Cyprus was the work of Sandwith, who in 1871 separated out the major pottery types, and arranged the cemeteries into five classes on the basis of the different wares found in each. The first two of these classes of cemetery were defined by the presence of Red Polished or of Base-Ring and White-Slip Wares, and which are therefore equivalent to earlier and later Bronze Age periods. At this time the different pottery styles were associated with ethnic or racial groups rather than interpreted in terms of a general techno- logical scheme.3 Although adoption of this basic classification was slow at first, with the larger body of well documented material from the various excavations carried out by the Cyprus Exploration Fund, by OhnefalschRichter, and by Myres in the last decade of the nineteenth century, the general pattern of development of what was now being referred to as the "Bronze Age" was becoming more clearly recognised. The general paradigm of Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages had been developed in Denmark earlier in the century, and had become generally accepted in other areas as a universal evolutionary scheme. Before the end of the century Myres and Ohnefalsch-Richter had begun the subdivision of the Cypriot Bronze Age, at least with a recognition of earlier and later tombs, using techniques which are clear from Myres' analysis of his 1894 excavations¹º (fig. la). This analysis was based on the identification of the major types of pottery a general technological grouping - and the presence or absence of these wares in the tombs. A simple seriation of the tombs on this basis is presented in tabular form by Myres, refining both the types and the methods outlined by Sandwith, and allowing the closer subdivision of the material, as well as setting an important precedent for later work on Cypriot prehistory. Other attempts at subdividing the material more formally were made,¹¹ but the scheme developed by Myres and published in more detail in 1914,12 remained unchanged until Gjerstad began his work on the island in 1923.
