His sister, with whom he had long committed incest, was also involved in his Satanic practice and revealed a witch's mark on her forehead. Unlike the Major, she confessed her sins to a minister before she was hung. The second story takes place near Chester, and concerns a pregnant young woman whose lover has her murdered. Her ghost repeatedly appears to a miller. He goes to a magistrate to report the crime and the murderers are brought to justice. In the third story, two officials staying near Woodstock are plagued by poltergeist-like tricks played on them by the Devil. This work was originally published in 1685, written to 'prove the existence of devils, spirits, witches, and apparitions'.With a contemporary owner's inscription to each front free endpaper, noting that each volume consists of twenty-six chapbooks. Chapbooks are published in Scotland and the north of England, and dated c1830-60 via Jisc. In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip heads and tails and joints, with areas of rubbing to boards. Small loss to spine label of volume II. Hinges strained but firmly held. Inscriptions to front free endpaper. Thomas and Sally, libretto by Isaac Bickerstaffe, is a light pastoral opera, written as an 'after piece' to a spoken play, and has the distinction of being the first English comic opera to be sung throughout. The work was first performed in November 1760 at the Theatre Royal, and starred Charlotte Brent as Sally, the milk maid, in constant peril from the unwanted attentions of the Squire, but ultimately rescued by Thomas, a sailor, returning from service at sea, defending king and country. Despite some nautical critics objecting to its sea-language as technically inaccurate, the opera proved to be very popular, particularly in America, where it inspired a slew of sea songs, including one by Susanna Rowson. American's proclivity for the work continued into the 20th century with the successful Broadway Revival by the Intimate Opera Company.
