In den WarenkorbPen, black ink and watercolor on paper; Sheet: 327 x 487 mm; Image: 240 x 354 mm Leo von Klenze was a German architect, painter and writer. In addition to Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841), he is regarded as the most important architect of classicism. At the age of 16, Klenze began studying architecture in Berlin and was a pupil of Aloys Hirt (1759-1837). In 1806 he made his first Grand Tour to Italy, which was to be followed by many more. In 1808 Klenze became court architect of King Jérôme Bonaparte in Kassel. In 1815 he was hired by Maximilian I Joseph King of Bavaria as his private architect and moved with his family to Munich. There he built numerous buildings over decades, which still shape the cityscape today. In 1810, Maximilian commissioned the German architect Carl von Fischer (1782-1820) with the construction of the new National Theater in Munich. On October 12, 1818, the house was opened and only a few years later, on January 14, 1823, a fire destroyed the whole building down to its foundations. The reconstruction was entrusted to Leo von Klenze, who, however, had to follow Fischer's design. Nevertheless, Klenze made a major change to the original plan. He replaced Fischer's hip roof above the main building with a double pitched roof, thereby doubling the gable motif of the vestibule. The present drawing already shows Klenze's modification and must have been made around the year 1823, when the reconstruction of the theater began. In January 1825 the theater was finally reopened. This present drawing was lately unknown. No other facade designs by Klenze for the National Theater are known. In den WarenkorbChinese money in a Russian collection --- The scarce catalogue of Asian numismatics compiled by Baron Stanislas de Chaudoir, one of the greatest coin collectors of the early 19th century. With an unusual bibliography, only in Chinese ideograms, of 88 Chinese works relating to the subject. A lovely example of the rarer first Russian issue, in a fine Russian binding. Stanislas de Chaudoir (17901858) was a Russian aristocrat with a passion for numismatics and antiquities. In the second half of the 18th century his father Jean Joseph relocated from Bavaria to Poland, where Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria granted nobility to him and his family. Stanislas subsequently established himself in Zhytomir, nowadays Ukraine. There, over the course of his life, he assembled an extensive collection of antiquities from the Kievan Rus and the Greek Black Sea colonies. Part of the Chaudoir's collection was purchased by the Hermitage Museum during his lifetime; the most valuable items, however, were subsequently taken to England by the Chaudoir's second wife Lucia after his death. His particular passion was numismatics and his collection, which included the rarest coins from all over the world, surpassed those of many European museums by the quantity and quality of objects. Chaudoir also owned a vast library, comprising 30 000 volumes with a large number of titles dedicated to numismatics. A seven-volume catalogue of the library, compiled by Chaudoir himself, was never published and is still preserved in manuscript in Ukraine. After having published, in the late 1830s, a catalogue of his Russian coins in French and Russian, Chaudoir embarked on making his Asian treasures available to a larger public, and published this richly illustrated catalogue. Like its predecessor, it made use of both languages: all plates bear captions in French and Russian; however it seems that the descriptive text was only published in French (about 80 pp.), constituting a larger part of the run for Russian and foreign audience. The large majority of public libraries in the West that hold this work have the French version, entitled Recueil de monnaies de la Chine, du Japon, de la Corée, d'Annam, et de Java, au nombre de plus de mille. The remaining part of the plates was bound with a Russian title but no accompanying text, as here. Of great rarity: WorldCat locates only two copies of this Russian version (in Leipzig and Geneva, in the Bibliothèque d'art et d'archéologie), both similar to this copy, and fewer than ten of the French; to which we could add a Russian example of the atlas alone (like here) in the library of the American Numismatic Society (which also has a full copy of the French). We could not trace any copies at Western auctions in the past fifty years. The catalogue seems to have been re-issued with a new title page in Russian in 1857. We came across one copy with the same collation as ours but with the imprint "S. Peterburg, 1857" on the title page. Provenance: Muzey Rossiyskoy Akademii Nauk [Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences] (stamp to title); Library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Physical description:Folio (about 39.5 25.5 cm). Title and 61 lithographed plates with captions in French and Russian. Contemporary green half morocco over green grained paper covers, spine lettered in gilt. Condition:Binding very lightly rubbed; rare light spotting internally - an attractive copy. Bibliography:Löwendahl: China illustrata nova. Supplement, 1759, not in Obolianinov.

Contemporary half calf over wooden boards; both covers elaborately decorated with ornamental plating and inlays of bone, brass, and mother-of-pearl (front cover very slightly cracked and brass plating loosened at the top left corner). Pocket in inside of lower cover; sheath with original thin pencil. Narrow gilt rules to spine. A single central clasp. All edges gilt. Remarkable, wide-ranging friendship album of Princess Anna of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-65), only daughter of the Hessian general Karl of Hesse and Princess Elizabeth of Prussia. In May 1865 she married Grad Duke Frederick Francis II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin but died of puerperal fever a week after the birth of her only child. Both her parents as well as her later husband have signed her album. - The entries are mainly by members of the European aristocracy, including Archduke Albert of Austria-Teschen (1817-95), Czar Alexander II of Russia (1818-81), Princess Alice of Great Britain (1843-78), Duke Frederick of Anhalt (1831-1904), Countess Charlotte Fugger (1830-76), Gustav Prince of Vasa (1799-1877), Prince Henry XXII Reuss-Greiz (1846-1902), Helena Louise of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Duchess of Orléans and Chartres (1814-58), Duke Joseph of Saxe-Altenburg (1789-1868), Joséphine de Beauharnais, Queen of Sweden and Norway (1807-76), Louis Philippe Albert d'Orléans, Comte de Paris (1838-94), King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1912), King Maximilian II of Bavaria (1811-64), Princess Sophie of Orange-Nassau, Grandduchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1824-97), Countess Théodolinde of Württemberg, Princess of Leuchtenberg (1814-57), Princess Therese of Oldenburg, née Nassau Weilburg (1815-71), Prince Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe (1834-1906), and many others. The later "Swan King" Ludwig II has signed his name twice: once as a six-year old, together with his mother Marie Friederike of Prussia (1825-89), and again as a twelve-year-old, alone. Other entries by children include Mary Victoria Hamilton (1850-1922), who would marry Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1869, and the later ethnologist, zoologist and botanist Therese of Bavaria (1850-1925). Other contributors from the field of science and scholarship include the explorer Adalbert von Barnim (1841-60), the geologist Wilhelm von Branca (1844-1928), and the theologian Carl Heinrich August von Burger (1805-84). - Pages numbered in pencil up to p. 160 by a later hand. Provenance note on the final page of text (p. 133) by Marie of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg (1850-1922): "This book belonged to the Grand Duchess Anna of Mecklenburg née Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt; it was later given to Duke John Albert of Mecklenburg in Dezember 1919 [.]".

In den Warenkorb1 f. of dedication, 100 lithogr. plates in splendid original colour raised in silver and gold. Stored loosely in 8 original wrappers as issued. Small oblong 4to (245 x 150 mm). Half calf portfolio with giltstamped title to spine. Complete set of pattern books for coaches; the most beautiful and comprehensive series of its kind ever published. The personal copy of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, to whom the work was dedicated. Exceedingly rare; only three complete copies are known in libraries and collections worldwide (the copy in the Bavarian State Library is incomplete, containing fascicules I-IV only). The magnificent work by the Munich draughtsman contains one hundred designs for sophisticated state coaches and everyday vehicles. The plates, beautifully coloured and many of them heightened in gold and silver, show open and closed coaches with two or four wheels, transport carriages, omnibuses, company cars, sleighs, railway carriages and a hearse; the plate printed in gold shows a sample of a monogram for coachmen's blankets or coach doors. - "Neueste Wagen" was most probably commissioned by Vinzenz Zanna & Comp. - publishers in Augsburg specialized in the distribution of maps since 1833 - and it is assumed that the careful hand-colouring of the plates was done on their premises. Dinkel's work, known in a few copies only, appeared in eight fascicules, each containing 12 and the last one 16 outline lithographs. Zanna dedicated Dinkel's work to Duke Maximilian of Bavaria (1808-88), father of the famous Empress Sisi. The dedication leaf is known in two versions: the paper embossed with a lozenge-shaped pattern recalling the Bavarian colors (as here) and with coloured lettering but without embossing. - Original wrappers slightly stained near the edges, otherwise a perfect copy from the Library of the Dukes of Bavaria at Tegernsee Castle. - Engelmann, Suppl., 23 (mentions only 6 issues of 12 ff. each). Facsimile with commentary: R. H. Wackernagel, Joseph Dinkel, Wagenmoden im Biedermeier. Stadtwagen, Reise- und Sportfahrzeuge zwischen 1830 und 1840. In den WarenkorbSecond Edition in Latin. 208 x 160 mm. (8 1/8 x 6 1/4"). 9 p.l., 262 pp.Translated from French into Latin by Joseph Claude Destouches. VERY ATTRACTIVE LATE 18TH CENTURY ETRUSCAN CALF IN THE STYLE OF EDWARDS OF HALIFAX, covers with gilt border, central panel framed by stencilled palmettes within double gilt rules, an Etruscan-style vase at center within a stencilled sunburst, raised bands, spine panels with blind-stamped Etruscan vase, black morocco label, gilt-rolled turn-ins, all edges gilt. With printer's elaborate engraved device on title page, engraved portrait of Elector Maximilian-Joseph of Bavaria at the head of the dedication to him, engraved allegorical headpiece at the opening of Book I, wood-engraved tailpieces at end of each section. Small wormhole near head of front joint, two corners a bit bumped, minor foxing to title and final page, other trivial imperfections, but QUITE A FINE, WIDE-MARGINED COPY, clean, fresh, and bright internally, and in a binding with only minor defects. This beautifully preserved and attractive Neoclassical binding is a fitting cover for a Latin edition of Fénelon's Homeric coming-of-age tale. Edwards of Halifax is credited with developing the process of acid staining calf by using stencils, a method known most notably to produce, as here, their so-called Etruscan calf bindings (after the Etruscan vase decoration they resembled). The process was also adopted by binders on the Continent, and became a fashionable choice for bindings in the late 19th century, when the present binding was surely produced. It is difficult to say whether this binding was done by the Edwards firm or by an imitator, but in any case, the quality of execution is very high. The popularity of Fénelon's account of the adventures of the son of Odysseus also spread, in this case beyond his native France, and it became a favorite of schoolboys far removed from the young Dauphin for whom it was originally composed. First printed in 1759, our Latin translation offered an opportunity for young men to practice reading that classical language. The engravings here were newly designed and executed for this edition by German painter and engraver Georg Sigmund Rösch (d. 1766).
