Benjamin Ortmeyer skizziert den Weg Mengeles, der in der NS-Zeit zunachst als Rassengutachter an der Goethe-Universitat und spater als morderischer SS-Arzt im Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau tatig war, bis er schliesslich unter falschem Namen nach Sudamerika floh. Zu den Besonderheiten der Nachkriegszeit gehort, dass der deutsche Botschafter in Argentinien Mengele trotz allem einen deutschen Reisepass auf seinen richtigen Namen ausstellte. Der Fall Mengele zeigt, wie es einem Nazi-Verbrecher, der bei der Selektion an der Rampe, im Krankenbau und in einzelnen Blocks in Auschwitz-Birkenau unzahlige Menschen in den Tod schickte und grausame 'medizinische' Versuche an Zwillingskindern und anderen Haftlingen durchfuhrte, gelingen konnte, seiner Strafe zu entgehen. Der in diesem Band vollstandig dokumentierte umfassende Haftbefehl der Staatsanwaltschaft Frankfurter aus dem Jahr 1981 hat diese Verbrechen als Grundlage fur eine angestrebte Anklage in beeindruckender Weise zusammengefasst. Andere konnten sogar ihre wissenschaftliche Karriere nach 1945 nahezu ungestort fortsetzen, wie Mengeles ehemaliger Vorgesetzter, Otmar von Verschuer. Viele hatten Verschuer gern wieder an der Goethe-Universitat gesehen, aber aus Sorge um einen moglichen Reputationsverlust in der Weltoffentlichkeit entschied man sich gegen eine erneute Berufung, attestierte ihm aber zugleich, dass er angeblich 'alle Qualitaten besitzt, die ihn zum Forscher und Lehrer akademischer Jugend pradestinieren'. Auch diese Vorgange sind dokumentiert. Im Fall Mengele gelang es 1961 immerhin, auf Druck von Hermann Langbein und anderen Auschwitz-Uberlebenden, die Goethe-Universitat dazu zu bewegen, ein Verfahren zur Aberkennung von Mengeles Doktortitel einzuleiten. Den in diesem Band versammelten Dokumenten ist unter anderem zu entnehmen, wie der per Haftbefehl gesuchte Massenmorder Mengele durch einen Aushang an der Universitat dazu aufgefordert wurde, sich am 6. Juli 1961 um 11.15 Uhr 'im Dienstzimmer des Rektors' zu melden.
