Neuware - Wissen über Gott und Engel, über Winde und Meteore, über Grammatik und Rhetorik, Informationen darüber, wie man eine Harfe baut, die einen zum Einschlafen bringt, aber auch darüber, wie man böse Geister bändigt, finden sich in den über hundert Publikationen, die unter dem Namen Johann Jacob Wecker (1528-1586/88) in vier Sprachen bis in die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts erschienen sind. Um dieses vielfältige Wissen zu versammeln, wurde kompiliert - es wurde aus Bestehendem Neues hergestellt. Für die Praktik der Kompilation war ein Netzwerk von Menschen, aber auch von Dingen unabdingbar; ohne deren Zusammenspiel wäre eine so vielfältige und vielfache Buchproduktion nicht möglich gewesen. Um derart viele Bücher publizieren zu können, war nicht nur das Kompilieren bedeutsam, sondern auch das Übersetzen und Auskoppeln von Teilen zwecks Herstellung neuer Bücher. Das Machen von Büchern aus Büchern bildete die Grundlage des Erfolgs dieser Publikationen, die in der Forschung bislang kaum Beachtung fanden.

Wahrscheinlich unter dem Pseudonym Alessio Piemontese (Alexius Pedemontanus) verfasste der Kartograph und Physiker Girolamo Ruscelli (um 1500/1504-1566) ein alchemistisches Werk, welches 1555 erstmals in italienischer Sprache unter dem Titel "De' secreti del reuerendo donno Alessio Piemontese, prima parte, diuisa in sei libri" veröffentlicht und recht bald in verschiedene Sprachen übersetzt wurde. In diesem Buch beschäftigt sich der Autor u.a. mit verschiedenen therapeutischen Möglichkeiten bei sämtlichen Erkrankungen sowie Rezepturen und mögliche hilfreiche Substanzen bei allerlei Zuständen für den Hausgebrauch. Sein Interesse für verschiedene wissenschaftliche und auch mysteriöse Zusammenhänge mündete in die Gründung der Akademie der Geheimnisse" in Neapel. Er schrieb Bücher zu unterschiedlichsten Themen und war auch als Übersetzer von klassischen Werken tätig. - Der Schweizer Arzt, Medicus und Verfasser diverser Schriften Johann Jacob Wecker (1528-1586) lebte und arbeitete ab 1566 in Colmar als Stadtphysicus, bzw. Stadtarzt. Zedlers Grosses vollständiges Universal-Lexicon aller Wissenschaft und Künste" schreibt über das vorliegende Buch: Seine [Weckers] Schriften sind: 1. Ein Übersetzung von des Alexii Pedemontani Bücher de Secretis aus dem Welschen ins Lateinische, welche er weit vermehrter zu Basel 1563 in 8, heraus gab." (S. 899, Band 53, online) Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich hier allerdings um einen Druckfehler im Zedler, denn das Buch wurde auß Welscher und Lateinischer sprach in Teutsch gebracht." Rare first and only edition of this treatise on the plague, which proposes among other remedies metallic and alchemical medicines, occult medicaments and the power of the Kabbalah against the disease.?The possible relations between the study of the Cabala and the practice of medicine are well illustrated by the case of Johann Pistorius of Nidde (1546-1608). In the preface to a pest tract of 1568 he had attacked the blind worship of Hippocrates, Galen and antiquity which, he said, had been too prevalent in the sixteenth century thus far. He argued that as the ancients in their day had advanced natural science, so modern men were not so weak-minded that they could make no further new discoveries. He felt that at present there was a keener spirit of investigation in the air. In the text he recommended metallic and alchemical medicines, the bezoar stone, occult medicaments, the bone from the heart of a stag, the stone from the head of an asp, and the chick of a stork, not yet able to fly but already feathered, burned alive to ashes in an earthen pot, taken with wine, as most efficacious for the pest. Another ingredient in one of his compounds was one hundred and eighty scorpions captured at the rising of Sirius. A remedy of pure quintessences prepared from one hundred and fifty simples in such artful proportions that it seemed sent from the sky, he refused to divulge further at present. He discussed for some eight pages, however, the question whether there was curative power in words [?] Nearly twenty years later Pistorius began the publication of his library of writers on the Cabala but does not seem to have carried it farther than the first volume. He says he began to study the doctrine of the Cabala when little more than a boy and collected many books on it in Hebrew and Latin. Of these he now printed Reuchlin's De verbo mirifico and De arte cabalistica, Riccio's De coelesti agricultura, Archangelus de Burgo Novo, Leo Hebraeus De amore, rabbi Joseph's Gate of Light, and one or two other treatises. Fourteen years later Pistorius was attacked by Jacob Heilbronner in a work entitled Daemonomania Pistoriana and dedicated to Frederick, duke of Wurtemberg and Tech, and count of Montbéliard (1593-16. Based on Swiss physician and philosopher Johannes Jacob Weckerâs De secreti libri xvi [Book of Secrets], first published in 1582, Eighteen Book of the Secrets of Art & Nature was conceived as âan Encyclopaedia of Arts and Sciences, interwoven with facetious Conceits to recreate the fancyâ. The compiler, Dr R. Read or Reade gives a long list of âAuthors made use of in this Treatiseâ which adds, Culpeper, Digby, Galileo, Harvey, Hobbs, Lady Howard and Platt to those used by Wecker. He has also inserted his own name between Rondolet and Rhasis. Wecker's original list remains one of the most unusual assortments of authors ever assembled. As is seen in other 16th and 17th century Books of Secrets, every imaginable topic of natural science, natural magic, arts, trades, sports and pastimes is included with a substantial compilation of recipes, experiments, and observations extracted from classical, medieval, and contemporary authors. Books of Secrets constituted one of the most popular genres in early modern scientific publishing and supplied a great deal of practical information to an emerging new, middle-class readership, leading some historians to link them with the emerging secularistic values of the early modern period and to see them as contributing to the making of an age of how-to. The "Secrets" are collected from about 150 different authors, including secrets of metal, glass, jewels, and how to counterfeit them; hail, rain, snow, thunder, lightning, hurricanes, natural magic, alchemics, mathematics, music and astrology. Johann Jacob Wecker (1528-86) was a physician at Basle. It derives from the work attributed to Alessio Piemontese (pseudon of Girolamo Ruscelli) , the first edition of which entitled De' secreti del reverendo donno Alessio Piemontese sei libri was printed in Venice in 1555. Wecker translated it into Latin and published, with additions, in Basel in 1559 and Lyon 1561. Occult sciences (magic, alchemy, astrology, divination, Kabbalah) , demonology and angelology, witchcraft, sorcery and necromancy, spirits, ghosts and apparitions; talismans and magical seals.
