"I draw first, and then I paint like Jean-Michel. I think the paintings we make together are better when we don't know who has done what" Andy Warhol. In the spring of 2023, Fondation Louis Vuitton will be holding Basquiat x Warhol Painting 4 hands, the most important exhibition ever devoted to the collaborative work of these two artists. The exhibition will feature more than 100 jointly signed paintings, in addition to individual works by Basquiat and Warhol, and works by other major artists (Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Kenny Scharf, etc.) in order to recreate the New York downtown art scene of the 1980s. From 1984 to 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 1988) and Andy Warhol (1928 1987) jointly produced about 160 paintings, some of the largest in their respective careers. A genuine artistic dialogue of style and form had developed between them that dealt equally well with crucial issues such as the integration of the African-American community into the narrative of North America, a continent where Warhol was a major manufacturer of icons. SELLING POINTS: . Published to accompany an exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton from 5 April to 28 August 2023 . Gutes Exemplar. - Titelblatt von David Armstrong SIGNIERT (Berlin, 1999). - Englisch. - Nachwort von Nan Goldin. - David Bradley Armstrong (* 24. Mai 1954 in Arlington; 26. (wiki) // . The simple, direct composition of Armstrong's photographs belies their complex meanings. As one looks through the book and into a young man's eyes there lies a vulnerability before the camera, yet we see beyond the surface of the page into the very core of his soul. As the subject returns your gaze you see through him, and a connection is made. So too with the landscapes; the viewer is inexplicably drawn into a world that is both familiar and transcendental. Armstrong's photographs are subdued, yet infused with an intense longing. Armstrong started his photographic journey by taking portraits of the people who give meaning to his life. He "wanted to make pictures that were simple, direct and accessible, about the relationship between myself, the sitter, and the light." Yet in the light, the air, the very quality of place, the landscapes eventually superseded the human subjects. Through this juxtaposition of portraits and landscapes we come to understand the intuitive quality of Armstrong's vision. The photographs show the desire and possibility of rescinding the constraints of our world and entering one that is beautiful, sensual and timeless. Vier Jahre später folgte Before Night Falls (2000).

Zustand: Near Fine. WILDLY INSCRIBED BY "QUEEN OF THE 80s DOWNTOWN SCENE" PATTI ASTOR on the title page. Also includes a wonderful "pink champagne bottle and glass" drawing in her hand, outlined by hearts. An all-but-pristine copy to boot of this elusve, self-published 2013 memoir by the legendary downtown proprietess and doyen of the East Village hot spot "Fun Gallery". Lasting only 4 years (1981-1985), Fun Gallery quickly developed an outsized reputation and influence on the New York art and cultural scenes. And this primarily because of Patti Astor herself, who not only offered very early shows to Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Jane Dickson but also actively courted leading hip-hop and graffiti artists such as Dondi, Futura 2000, FABS FREDDY, Lee Quinones and others to take part in the scene. By moving hip-hop and graffiti artists into a physical gallery space --no matter how modest-- she was "bringing uptown sensibilities downtown". A scarce memoir of the nascent --but fast-moving-- art scene in SoHo and the East Village, among other downtown spots, authored by one of the scene's principal actors.

Scarce thus. In the 1990s, a loose-knit group of American artists and creators, many just out of their teens, began their careers influenced by the popular underground youth subcultures of the day, such as skateboarding, graffiti, street fashion, and independent music. Artists like Shepard Fairey, Mark Gonzales, Spike Jonze, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Phil Frost, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, and Ed Templeton began to create art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Many had no formal training and almost no conception of the inner workings of the art world. They learned their crafts through practice, trial and error, and good old-fashioned innovation. Not since the Beat Generation have we seen a group of creative individuals with such a unified aesthetic sense and varied cultural facets. The world of art has been greatly affected by their accomplishments as have the worlds of fashion, music, literature, film, and, ironically, athletics. Beautiful Losers is a retrospective celebration of this spirit, with hundreds of artworks by over two dozen artists, from precursors like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Larry Clark, to more recent adherents Ryan McGinniss, KAWS, and Geoff McFetridge. Work in all conceivable mediums is included, plus reproductions of reams of ephemera. The accompanying essays are contributed by half a dozen writers who have championed these beautiful losers from the start.
