Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Where did opera begin? Why are wine, women and song so important to the Italians? What is the connection between Italy and the fastest tractor in the world? This book answers these questions, and many more, in a concise and lively overview of Italy: the country, its languages, its people, their way of life and culture and what makes them tick. If you are studying for examinations which require a knowledge of the background of Italy and its civilisation, or if you are learning the language, in, for example, an evening class and want to know more about the country, this is the book for you. If your job involves travel and business relations, it will provide valuable and practical information about the ways and customs of the people you are working with. Or if you simply have an interest in Italy for whatever reason, it will broaden your knowledge about the country and its inhabitants. The book is divided into three sections. Chapters One and Two deal with the forces historical, geographical, geological, demographical and linguistic that have brought about the formation of the country we know as Italy and the language we know as Italian. Chapters Three to Seven deal with the wealth of creative aspects of Italian culture from the beginnings to the present day. These chapters take a look at the main areas or works of literature, art and architecture, music, traditions and festivals, science and technology, fashion, and food and drink, together with the people who have created and are still creating them. Chapters Eight to Eleven deal with aspects of contemporary Italian society and the practicalities of living in present-day Italy: the way the political structure of the country is organized, education, the environment, the workplace and how people spend their leisure time. The final chapter looks at the country s relations with the wider world, and takes a glance at the future. Each chapter ends with a section entitled Taking it Further , where you will find useful addresses, websites, suggested places to visit and things to see and do. The new edition takes into account any developments in Italian culture and society, such as the introduction of the euro, which have occurred since first publication. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'Moorehead paints a wonderfully vivid and moving portrait of the women of the Italian Resistancean excellent book She depicts a tragic fate that is timeless, of dreams forged in adversity, shattered by collisions with practical politics' MAX HASTINGS, SUNDAY TIMES A Spectator Book of the Year The extraordinary story of the courageous women who spearheaded the Italian Resistance during the Second World War In the late summer of 1943, when Italy changed sides in the War and the Germans now their enemies occupied the north of the country, an Italian Resistance was born. Ada, Frida, Silvia and Bianca were four young Piedmontese women who joined the Resistance, living clandestinely in the mountains surrounding Turin. They were not alone. Between 1943 and 1945, as the Allies battled their way north, thousands of men and women throughout occupied Italy rose up and fought to liberate their country from the German invaders and their Fascist collaborators. The bloody civil war that ensued across the country pitted neighbour against neighbour, and brought out the best and worst in Italian society. The courage shown by the partisans was exemplary, and eventually bound them together as a coherent fighting force. The womens contribution was invaluable they fought, carried messages and weapons, provided safe houses, laid mines and took prisoners. Adas house deep in the mountains became a meeting place and refuge for many of them. The death rattle of Mussolinis two decades of Fascist rule with its corruption, greed and anti-Semitism was unrelentingly violent, but for the partisan women it was also a time of camaraderie and equality, pride and optimism. They had proved, to themselves and to the world, what resolve, tenacity and, above all, exceptional courage could achieve. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The starving population has devoured all the tropical fish in the aquarium, respectable women have been driven to prostitution and the black market is king. Lewis finds little to admire in his fellow soldiers, but gains sustenance from the extraordinary vivacity of the Italians. There is the lawyer who earns his living bringing a touch of Roman class to funerals, the gynaecologist who "specializes in the restoration of lost virginity" and the widowed housewife who times her British lover against the clock. "Were I given the chance to be born again," writes Lewis, "Italy would be the country of my choice." However Lewis regards his greatest achievement to have been the reaction to his article Genocide in Brazil, published in The Sunday Times in 1968. Suicide in Italy from National Unification to World War I, 1860-1915. This work examines the bases for the widespread belief among Italians during their first fifty years as a unified country that suicide was a growing epidemic. The story of this concern over the rise in suicide is told within the context of related debates over Italy?s emerging national identity and what it meant to be Italian. Many commentators saw suicide in this period as a «safety valve» peculiar to Italy?s late political and economic development. Popular «Degeneration» theories gave scientific credibility to such sociological analyses, while the Roman Catholic Church linked the rise in suicide to the secular unification of the state. Controversies over a resurgence of dueling and a fascination with war as «indirect» suicide are examined in this overview of Italian social, cultural, and legal history. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,3, Heidelberg International Business Academy, language: English, abstract: In 2007, the Dolce and Gabbana print advertisement campaign triggered different reactions in Germany. Some ethnic entities, such as Italian citizens tended to react intensely to the provocative advertising, in their country of origin there were even grave protests against Dolce and Gabbana.German citizens however did not seem to be impacted in such an intense way. This seems to be due to the fact that the basic elements of culture, which are social structure, language, communication, religion and values and attitudes differ between ethnic entities. Moreover these different norms and values are affected by the affiliation of a collective, signifying that within an ethnic entity, Italian citizens, who live in Germany, norms and values of individuals are similar. In particular the elements religion, values and attitudes seem to be of crucial importance as Dahl et al. (2003:269) state that 'shocking advertising content is that which attempts to surprise an audience by deliberately violating norms for societal values and personal ideals'.In order to examine how effective shock advertisement is applied on Germans and Italians in Germany a literature review on shock advertisement and the respective culture was conducted. The outcome of the literature review are several hypotheses, which were verified or confuted respectively. Therefore primary data was quantitatively, through questionnaires, and qualitatively, through semi-structured interviews, collected. This led to pivotal findings and conclusions, which are ascribable to cultural differences of Germans and Italians. The conclusion and findings of this research might be crucial for organisations and companies, which do not intend to communicate exclusively to their standard target group, Germans, but also to an ethnic minority, Italians, in Germany. This ethnic minority seems to be crucial for the German domestic market as in 2004 an average net wage of 1470 EUR per month was reached, consequently this target group features a considerable purchasing power, which can only be capitalized if this target group is advertised adequately, taking into account cultural particularities.

Located on the far south-easterly tip of the country, it offers breathtaking views of Gibraltar and Africa. In fact, it was an American by the name of McMicking who, in the early sixties, launched Sotogrande as a private resort for aristocrats and bankers, providing them with a discrete hideaway where they could shirk the trappings of their position. Nowadays, Sotogrande has become a melting pot of jet setters who flock to this exclusive resort from the far corners of the world. And little wonder, for its stunning avenues, wonderful marina, luscious greenery and typical cork oaks all contribute to the uniqueness of this resort. During the month of August, however, this little part of Andalusia becomes the epicentre of polo. Sotogrande is also acclaimed for its magnificent golf courses, take the mythical Valderrama Golf Club, for instance. This book offers you a guided tour of the architectural masterpieces and variation Sotogrande has long been known for. Now North American readers can enjoy the novel that has won over the world. It begins in late autumn 1992 as an elderly Italian woman, prompted by the knowledge of her encroaching death, sits down to write a letter to her granddaughter now grown and living in far-off America. Through these moving reflections, we see one life laid bare--joys, sorrows, regrets, and all. And through the eyes of a woman nearing the end of her days, we come to understand what life experience has taught her: that no matter what the stakes, we must look within ourselves and gather the courage to follow our hearts. [4], CLIX, [1] ll.First edition of a famous biography of the national hero of Albania, Georg Kastriota or Castriota, known as Skanderbeg (1405-1468), by the only Albanian historian before the nineteenth century, Marin Barleti or Marinus Barletius (Shkodra ca. 1450 - Rome 1512), an historian, author and priest from Skhodra. Skanderbeg became a national hero in Albania as the national leader in the struggle with and wars against the Ottoman Empire, fighting for Albanian independence. The book s Latin title refers to the region using the name of the ancient kingdom Epirus in what is now south Albania.Skanderbeg was born into an Albanian noble family, but as a young boy in 1415 and again as a young man in 1423 he was sent as a hostage to the Ottoman Sultans, Murad I and II respectively, in Constantinople, where he converted to Islam and took the name Iskender (Skanderbeg is derived from that name). In the 1440's Murad II sent Skanderbeg with the Ottoman army to his native Albania. Once there, he left the Turkish army in November 1443 and abandoned the Sultan to become the leader - and hero - of the struggle for Albanian independence, rebelling against the Ottomans and leading a successful military campaign that expelled them from Albania. He managed to maintain Albania's independence for 25 years, but after his death the country fell back under Ottoman control. Barleti's work highlights Skanderbeg's influence on the political landscape of Albania, the Balkan peninsula and Europe. The double-headed eagle in the left woodcut of the frame on the title-page may allude to Skanderbeg s Castriota family coat of arms. Barleti s name does not appear on the title-page but does in the detailed table of contents and preface. The book includes a woodcut portrait of Skanderbeg and was published at Rome, the colophon noting that it was printed there by "B.V.", meaning the Venetian printer Bernardino de Vitali, who appeared in at least four Roman imprints as well, though based primarily in Venice. The book gained widespread popularity throughout Europe and was translated into several languages, serving as the basis for other works about Scanderbeg's life, such as Jacques de Lavardin's Histoire de Georges Castriot surnomme Scanderbeg, Roy d'Albanie, published in France in 1576 and reprinted in numerous editions. Barleti s work remains the basis for all research on Skanderbeg and for the Skanderbeg cult that played such an important role in the awakening of Albanian nationalism in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Barleti is best known for his present biography of Skanderbeg, but the date of its printing remains uncertain. Little is known of Barleti s life: he was still living in Shkodra during its 1477-1478 siege by the Ottoman Empire. In 1479 he went to Italy to study history. In 1504 he published his history of the siege of Shkodra (De obsidione Scodrensi), printed in Venice by Bernardino de' Vitali or Vitalibus, the "B.V." named as printer at Rome in the colophon of the present biography: "Impressum Romae per B.V.". De Vitali had set up in Venice by early 1495 and continued there to 1539. He had at least four Roman imprints, the present one undated and the others in 1507, 1508 and 1522, though he remained active in Venice during these years as well. The present book has usually been dated ca. 1508/10, but Norton argues that its printing materials suggest a date after 1515, perhaps in 1520 or 1522. The two USTC descriptions appear to describe a single edition and should probably be merged. With a manuscript note on the front board "3971" in brown ink and a few marginal notes. With the bookplate of Jean Michel Cantacuzène (b. 1933), Romanian-born industrial chemist, professor and government advisor in France, on the front paste-down. The binding shows very slight signs of wear, internally only occasionally lightly stained without affecting the text. (with a few others, including one partly with original smudge, the rest excellent), on a silk fan with dark wood spokes and the owner's fine silver monogram 'H [von] G' under a heraldic coronet of five pearls, the fan was made in Vienna where most of the signatures were collected, a few at St Moritz, Gastein, Salzburg or Munich, they range from Sarah Bernhardt in 1893, Mark Twain in Vienna 1897 through to Felix Dahn in 1901, Gebrüder Rodeck, Vienna, circa beautifully framed and glazed with museum glass Mark Twain (Nov. 8 1897) and his family had settled in Vienna for the winter at the Hotel Metropole, where their apartment became a kind of 'social clearing house' for literary and artistic people. At a time when tensions in the Empire were growing, Austrians of progressive thought were not exactly encouraged, and the signatures reflect the welcome given in society to distinguished foreigners. Sarah Bernhardt (1893) had made extended tours since 1891 to Australia, North and South America, and the chief capitals of Europe. In October 1893 she took over the Renaissance theatre in Paris under her reforming management no prompter, no claque. Pietro Mascagni (9th November 1895) was only 26 when he wrote Cavalleria Rusticana (1890). He brought a new 'realism' to the stage, (revolutionary in the Italian opera), as did Gerhart Hauptmann (28th December 1895) and Hermann Sudermann (12th November 1895) with their plays. The latter's Heimat ('Home', 1891) had questioned unfeeling traditional morality. Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse performed it as Magda in London in 1895 in rival productions. Ruggero Leoncavallo (7th December 1897) had shot to fame in 1892 in Milan with Pagliacci, a tribute to verismo with his own libretto. His second opera, his version of La Bohème, competing with Puccini's but reflecting the whole story of the original novel, had premièred in Venice on 6th May 1898. Now he was trying to arrange a performance in Vienna, which took place in February 1898, rather against the wishes of Gustav Mahler, who was standing in for director Jahn. Bronislaw Huberman (St Moritz, 23rd September (?) 1895) had outshone Patti at her farewell concert in Vienna on 22nd January 1895. He returned to Vienna in October 1895 and there, on 29th January 1896, Brahms was overcome by the 13-year old's playing of his Violin Concerto. Ernest van Dyck (14th November 1895), following an outstanding appearance at Bayreuth in 1888, was engaged by the Vienna Opera, where he stayed for nine years. Vasily Vereshchagin (November 1897) was one of the first Russian artists to be widely known outside his country. Living in Germany, he painted symbolic pictures with almost photographic realism. Von Moltke, after seeing his 1882 exhibition in Berlin, forbade German soldiers to visit it, and the Austrian government reacted similarly. Franz von Lenbach (Munich, 1896) was the accomplished 'realist' painter and portraitist of some of the most famous people of the time. He signs within a flourish shaped like a palette and brushes. Felix Dahn (22nd December 1901), now rector of the university at Breslau, capital of Prussian Silesia, was a household name for his historical romances and his poems, epics of the German peoples from the mists of time. Meticulously researched, they gave an immediacy to what were previously disjointed memories. The slightly smudged signature (Salzburg, 23rd September 1901) we think is (Gustav) Adolph von Meng-T[rimmis], (1865-1957, Swiss Artist), or a near relation.
