Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Of all the colourful horsemen in history, perhaps cowboys exert the most enduring fascination. People seem to need these archetypal heroes, even if many of them were drunkards, rapists and murderers. The first cowboys arrived in the Americas with Columbus. They were wild cattle hunters and were truly the lone frontiersmen of myth. Over the centuries, though, their freedom to roam the range and live like Indians between earth and sky has gradually been eroded, so that the modern cowboy is simply a working horseman. Even so the legend endures. Seeking this legacy, Hank Wangford set off on a long journey across the Americas. From the Gauchos of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay to the Llaneros of Venezuela and the Vacqueros of Mexico, Wangford encountered them all and heard their stories, discovering in the process a rich vein of myth, folklore and unexpected truth. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Patrick O'Brian's first novel about the sea, The Golden Ocean, took inspiration from Commodore George Anson's fateful circumnavigation of the globe in 1740. In The Unknown Shore, O'Brian returns to this rich source and mines it brilliantly for another, quite different tale of exploration and adventure. The Wager was parted from Anson's squadron in the fierce storms off Cape Horn and struggled alone up the coast of Chile until she was driven against the rocks and sank. The survivors were soon involved in trouble of every kind. A surplus of rum, a disappearing stock of food, and a hard, detested captain soon drove them into drunkenness, mutiny, and bloodshed. After many months of privation, a handful of men made their way northward under the guidance of a band of Indians, at last finding safety in Valparaiso. This saga of survival is the background to the adventures of two young men aboard the Wager: midshipman Jack Byron and his friend Tobias Barrow, an alarmingly naive surgeon's mate. Patrick O'Brian's many devoted readers will take particular interest in this story, as Jack and Toby form a kind of blueprint for Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, the famed heroes of the great Aubrey/Maturin series to come. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Thor Heyerdahl, explorer, anthropologist and adventurer, is well-known for his daring expedition around the globe. Almost half a century ago he risked his life sailing from Peru to Polynesia on a balsa raft, the story immortalized in his book "The Kon-Tiki Expedition" (1948). Since then similar voyages have taken him across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and the most remote corners of the world, in a lifelong quest for knowledge, adventure and excitement. In recent years his travels have led him back to Peru, where he learned of the colossal pre-Columbian site of Tucume, containing 26 pyramids. Who had built these pyramids, and when? What discoveries lay in store for the investigator wishing to probe their mysteries? Heyerdhal set up camp, and in this narrative describes his experiences and the ambitious programme of excavations his team undertook. Numerous burials have been uncovered, revealing grave goods, including Inca silver figurines and featherwork textiles. They discovered a mud-plaster frieze depicting reed boats of exactly the type Hererdahl had foreseen. This, together with lapis lazuli from Chile and shells from Ecuador and Panama, provided confirmation that the people of Tucume were experienced voyagers who traded over long distances. This book is a first-hand account of Hererdahl's discoveries. Weaving together archaeology, myth and history with portraits of the present-day community, it should be of interest to travellers, archaeologists, anthropologists annd adventure-lovers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The second book Patrick OBrian wrote about the sea and a brilliant sequel to The Golden Ocean. As in The Golden Ocean, The Unknown Shore tells the tale of another ill-fated ship on Ansons expedition round the world the Wager. Parted from her squadron in the fearful storms off Cape Horn, the Wager struggles on alone up the ironbound coast of Chile, before she is driven onto rocks and sinks. The survivors include Jack Byron, a midshipman, and his eccentric protege Toby, an alarmingly naive surgeons mate with a single-minded devotion to zoology. Faced with a surplus of rum, a disappearing stock of food, and a hard, detested captain, the survivors soon descend into trouble of every kind, including drunkeness, mutiny and bloodshed. As they make their way northwards under the guidance of a band of stony and depraved Indians, they at last find safety and good treatment in Valparaiso. Admirers of OBrians Aubrey-Maturin novels will see in Jack Byron a matter-of-fact, bluff precursor to the great Jack Aubrey. Whilst Toby, raging in Greek against a corrupt Member of Parliament, stripped by thieves in the Farthing Pie House, asking the Commodore to carry his snake, arousing the darkest suspicions in the Chilean Inquisition, is an amiable companion whose vagaries afford endless diversion on a hard and dramatic journey. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The author of The Land That Lost Its Heroes, an award-winning study of Argentina and the Falklands War, embarks on journeys of discovery to the South American countries of Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, relating his adventures with the diverse people who make up this continent. He conducts us by steam train up the Andes and down to the depths of a Bolivian tin mine. We find a hotbed of Argentine loyalties in Tierra del Fuego, beaches of bodies beautiful in Brazil and Peruvian streets where fanantical Sendero Luminoso guerrillas wage a permanent power struggle with the military. Burns introduces us to Sixto Vazquez, Indian intellectual with an unshakeable faith in legend and animism; to Tina, White Russian Duchess of Platinov, who now presides over a domain of moths in the Ecuadorean rain forest; and to Father Renato Hevia, editor of a Jesuit magazine in Chile who is harassed and detained if he fails to mention Pinochet in every edition. Jimmy Burns is a journalist who works for the Financial Times. He is the recipient of the 1988 Somerset Maugham Award for Non-Fiction. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Following Rivers of Gold and The Golden Age, World Without End is the conclusion of a magisterial three-volume history of the Spanish Empire by Hugh Thomas, its foremost worldwide authority World Without End is the climax of Hugh Thomas's great history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. It describes the conquest of Paraguay and the River Plate, of the Yucatan in Mexico, the only partial conquest of Chile, and battles with the French over Florida, and then, in the 1580s, the extraordinary projection of Spanish power across the Pacific to conquer the Philippines. More significantly, it describes how the Spanish ran the greatest empire the world had seen since Rome - as well as conquistadores, the book is people with viceroys, judges, nobles, bishops, inquisitors and administrators of many different kinds, often in conflict with one another, seeking to organise the native populations into towns, to build cathedrals, hospitals and universities. Behind them - sometimes ahead of them - came the religious orders, the Franciscans, Dominicans, Augustinians, and finally the Jesuits, builders of convents and monasteries, many of them of astonishing beauty, and reminders of the pervasiveness of religion and the self-confidence of the age. Towering above them all, though moving rarely from the palace of the Escorial outside Madrid, is the figure of King Philip II, the central figure in the book. The Venetian ambassador thought him 'the arbiter of the world'. Once the Philippines had been consolidated, Philip's advisors contemplated an invasion of China: the Jesuit Father Sanchez called it 'the greatest enterprise which has ever been proposed to any monarch in the world'. It was an enterprise never undertaken, but never explicitly abandoned. Was it a great or a terrible empire? In contrast to other empire builders, the Spaniards entered upon arguments with each other about their right to rule other peoples, and their ruthlessness was often tempered by humanity. Hugh Thomas's conclusion is unequivocal: 'The speed with which the sixteenth-century conquistadores conquered such large territories on two vast continents, and the comparable success of missionaries with large populations of Indians, stands as one of the supreme epics of both valour and imagination by Europeans.' 'One of the most productive and wide-ranging historians of modern times' New York Times 'The greatest historian of the Spanish speaking world' Guardian (Year Ahead in Books 2014). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Guter Zustand. . . . . Aus: wikipedia-Cowboy. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 265.
