Engraved invitation, printed on stiff card stock. Vignette of sailing ships, pictured within a seashell on the upper portion of the invitation. Laid down on the lower right corner is a printed list of students names, including Delano Ames, Pres.; F. Howard Seely, V. Pres.; Harry B. Mason, Sec'y; and several others. Small rubbed spot on the card, slightly affecting the date; verso shows traces of glue, perhaps removed from a scrapbook. The Preparatory School was "designed to afford a thorough preparation for the [Columbian] College. It furnishes also a High School Course, occupying two years, for pupils who have completed their studies in the common English branches, either in the Public Schools or elsewhere," according to the 1883 Catalogue of the Officers and Students of the Columbian University [Washington, DC: Rufus H. Darby, Printer, 1883]. Delano Ames won the Janus Gold Medal in French from the prep school in the 1884-1885 session, and he and F. Howard Seely also won Gold Medals for Punctuality and Deportment. Columbian College, originally incorporated in 1821, was renamed Columbian University in 1873 and moved to 15th and H Streets, NW. In 1904 the University changed its name to The George Washington University in an agreement with the George Washington Memorial Association. The University moved to its current Foggy Bottom location in 1912.
