Title within woodcut border printed in red and black, and over 1600 woodcut illustrations in text of plants, animals, minerals. An encyclopaedia of medieval beliefs and the first natural history encyclopaedia. Since God had created the natural world to be of use to humanity, animals and plants were there to provide cures for diseases. So therefore, the book is entitled Hortus Sanitatis, The garden of health . The Ortus Sanitatis describes species in the natural world, from plants, to animals and minerals, along with their medicinal applications (the operationes). It was also a world filled with wonder and belief in extraordinary creatures. Mythical creatures are included, and the pages are filled with creatures such as the phoenix, dragon, mermaid and other monsters. The work includes tracts on medicinal plants, animals, birds, fish; mining and gemstones; and a work on the analysis of urine. This last tract is illustrated by a woodcut showing medical men examining phials of urine in a shop.

The tract De facile acquisibilibus is added for the first time as a supplement to the section De urinis. Folio (11 7/8 x 8 1/8 inches; 300 x 205 mm). With…367 (of 368) leaves, bound without the final blank which is common. Printed in double columns, with over 1000 column-width woodcuts within the text. Title page within an elaborate woodcut border and three full-page woodcuts. Two of which are of physicians, and the third is of a skeleton. The illustration cuts are reverse copies of those by Johann Prüss. from the c.1496 Strasbourg which were copies from the first edition printed in Mainz by Jacob Meydenbach in 1491. Newer full calf. Boards stamped in black and blind. Spine lettered in gilt and incorrectly dated 1497. Title-page is slightly remargined from the top and bottom. A few leaves with some very minor worming, all to the edge of the bottom margin, not affecting text. Some light spotting to a few leaves. Overall a beautiful and clean copy. In reference to an earlier edition "The full-page woodcut of the human skeleton appears here for the first time in an edition of the Herbals, and was added to nearly all the following Latin, French, and also to some German editions of the Hortus up to about 1540. This skeleton picture represents, from a graphic viewpoint, the best that was published of this kind before Vesalius" (Klebs, 46). According to Mortimer, the title-page border with dolphin motif was divided between Benalius's and Tacuinus's shops, the former setting thirty of the quires, and the latter twenty-eight. The fine four-part title-page border with dolphins was part of Tacuinus's stock, first used by him a few months earlier for his edition of Vitruvius."it was one of the most influential pieces of [book] ornamentation of the sixteenth century", being copied in several formats by many other Renaissance printers. (Mortimer Italian 238). In reference to an earlier edition, this early encyclopedia of mediaeval science, Hortus Sanitatis, "The Garden of Health," is the "third and most extensive of the fundamental botanical compilations which are generally now called herbals. The first was the Herbarius of 1484, and the second was the enlargement called Gart der Gesundheit. The third form, though based in part on the Gart der Gesundheit, was almost entirely rewritten and elaborated upon, especially in the parts on animals, birds, fishes, stones and minerals, and in the treatise on urines; the text on herbs too is quite different, each chapter beginning with a description of the plant, its synonyms, and often something about its geographical origin, and ending with a list of the plant's medicinal virtues in a separate section headed "Operationes" (Hunt, p. 12). This volume provides transcriptions, translations, and commentary on the Latin texts on the map, particularly their sources, as well as the place names in several regions. This leads to a demonstration of a very close relationship between the Martellus map and Martin Waldseemüller's famous map of 1507. One of the most exciting discoveries on the map is in the hinterlands of southern Africa. The information there comes from African sources; the map is thus a unique and supremely important document regarding African cartography in the fifteenth century. This book is essential reading for digital humanitarians and historians of cartography.

Gesamthaft gutes, kaum gebrauchtes Exemplar. - Reprint nach dem Exemplar der Originalausgabe in lateinischer Sprache von 1511 in der Civica Biblioteca di Bergamo.…Eines von 500 nummerierten Exemplaren. Ohne jegliche weitere editorische Angaben. - Die dem Reprint zu Grunde liegende Ausgabe war in Venedig erschienen (vgl. u.a. Brit. Libr.). Dabei muss es sich um eine Bearbeitung oder Variante des Hortus Sanitatis von Jakob Meydenbach (Mainz 1491) handeln, die ihrerseits von dem lateinischen Herbarius (Maguntiae impressus, i.e. Mainz 1484) bzw. dem deutschen Gart der Gesundheit (Mainz 1485; beide gedruckt von Peter Schöffer) inspiriert war. Wie bei diesen frühen Werken üblich entstanden in relativ kurzer Folge zahlreiche, teilw. bearbeitete Nachdrucke, die die Übersicht erschweren. Möglicherweise fusst die Ausgabe Venedig 1511 auf einem Meydenbach-Nachdruck von 1497 durch Johann Pryss in Strassburg. Dessen ?Werk ist kleiner als das Meydenbach?sche Original, die Druckbuchstaben zierlicher. Vieles ist weggelassen. Zur Illustration benützte Pryss Holzschnitte von Grüninger, andere sind Meydenbach nachgeschnitten. Die sieben grossen Einblattbilder fehlen (was hier auch der Fall ist), dafür sind einige Bilder aus der Brunschwyg?schen ?Chirurgia? eingefügt.? (K. E. Heilmann, Kräuterbücher in Bild und Geschichte. Allach 1966, p. 138, vgl. auch p. 141 für eine Ausgabe Venedig 1538 mit dem gleichen Satzspiegel von 24.5 x 16.5 cm wie im vorliegenden Exemplar). Heilmann scheint bevorzugt die Drucker quasi als Verleger oder gar Autor zu nennen; in Bibliothekskatalogen findet man als Verfasser jedoch gelegentlich den wohl anonym aufgetretenen Johann von Cuba, i.e. Johannes Dronnecke od. Wonnecke von Kaub als Verfasser des ?Herbarius? oder ?Gart der Gesundheit? genannt (vgl. dazu bes. auch ADB u. Provenance: Krasnoff Collection of Western Americana. First edition and an ATTRACTIVE COPY of and important account "showing the French claims to the Southern territory now occupied by several states, but claimed also by the English under the name of "Carolana." The author resided in Louisiana fifteen years, and it is from his relation that most of the details of the life of the Natchez and other Mississippi tribes of Indians have been derived. Later historians have availed themselves of his materials. The plates are barbarous; indeeed, the "Monthly Review," XIX. 296, remarks, "they remind one of the cuts in the old 'Hortus Sanitatis.' The author appears to have been a very sensible and a very worthy man, but with very little talent as a writer. His stile is unequal and diffuse, and his work wants method."
