Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Staffordshire boasted one of the first dedicated aerodromes in Great Britain when, in 1910, Dunstall Park, Wolverhampton, hosted the first ever All British Flying Meeting. Since then, flying has always featured in the county. In the First World War Dunstall Park was joined by other aerodromes at Perton and Halford Lane, Smethwick, and even during the demise of flying in the 1920s, itinerant joy flight operators and flying circuses still operated. During the 1930s municipal airports were established at Walsall, Stoke and Wolverhampton, where the new Boulton Paul Aircraft Factory was built. The Second World War saw an explosion of airfield construction across Staffordshire as important training bases were built. After 1945 only RAF Lichfield remained in use, although RAF Hixon was used as a sub-site for the RAF Depot at Stafford. Then, in 1956, Boulton Paul reopened disused airfields in the area when they made RAF Seighford their Test Flight Centre. Since then, although the three municipal airports have closed, private flying is becoming ever more popular and airfields such as Tatenhill, Penkridge and Halfpenny Green are thriving once more. This fascinating collection of over 200 photographs vividly chronicles the highs and lows of flying in Staffordshire and the Black Country. From pictures of an early aviation meeting at Burton on Trent to the frenetic activity of the Second World War and the microlights of today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Good. Hertford, first documented in 673 AD, grew up beside a shallow ford across the River Lea, and was founded in 912-13 AD as a royal borough by Edward the Elder, who built twin fortifications on either side of the river. The surrounding county was named after it, and William the Conqueror built a motte-and-bailey castle, which later became a royal palace. But medieval Hertford suffered a reversal of fortunes when its lucrative monopoly of road and river tolls was taken by Ware, prompting a bitter feud which continued down the centuries, and the town went into economic decline. From the end of Tudor times, Hertford and its environs began to attract a wealthier upper class, some building grand mansions and parks and acquiring great influence. The external and internal conflicts of the 17th century were accompanied by the first stirrings of Nonconformism, but the contrasts between rich and poor were deepening. As population and poverty grew, Victorian Hertford experienced a great outpouring of charitable activity, educational and religious outreach. Modernisation began with the coming of the railway, but progress was hampered by intractable social problems in the slums of Bircherley Green. Both world wars impacted heavily on the county, its proximity to London bringing numerous bombing raids, but post-war Hertford developed as a popular commuter town, spoilt only by the building of a divisive relief road in the 1960s. Population has grown slowly, from about 10,000 in the early 1900s to over 24,000 today, and there is still an enduring sense of community and a high quality of life in this immensely attractive, busy and vibrant place. The author's detailed yet accessible exploration of its long history places the emphasis on the lives of the ordinary people. This well written, fully illustrated, chronological account is a significant contribution to the published history of Hertford. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. No outfield player has played more games for Sunderland than Len Ashurst. In his fascinating autobiography Len details the extraordinary ups and downs of his career, including his fall out with Brian Clough, rejection by his home town club Liverpool, drinking with Jim Baxter, taking Newport County to promotion and a European quarter-final, winning promotion with Cardiff City, the pie-selling thief of Ninian Park and surviving a murder attempt whilst manager of an Arabian football team. After 458 games at a 'Left Back' for Sunderland, his managerial career took him from Hartlepool through to Gillingham, Sheffield Wednesday, Newport and Cardiff before returning to his beloved Roker Park and taking his team to Wembley. Then it was on to coaching in the Middle East and Malaysia where he met Princes, Tariq Aziz and Yasser Arafat when he took his team to the Gaza Strip. His career wasn't all a bed of roses. The tiff with Clough led to Len refusing to play in Old Big 'ead's testimonial match. He also presided over difficult times at Sheffield Wednesday as the club almost suffered relegation to the Fourth Division and saw Sunderland slide out of the top flight under his tenure. The highs and lows of his career provide an undulating backdrop for tales of the many personalities Len has met and also worked and played with and against, including Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Malcolm Allison, Sir Alex Ferguson, Don Howe, Ron Atkinson, Dave Mackay, George Best, Nobby Styles, Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter and John Aldridge. Throughout the latter history of the Premier League Len has been deeply involved in its evolution, including being instrumental in the foundation of the Premier League Academies. As a Premier League Match Delegate he has witnessed many notorious incidents including the fight between Newcastle United team-mates Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer. In a 'Left Back In Time', which looks back at a remarkable career which has spanned six decades, Len pulls no punches as he controversially speaks his mind in revealing the many issues which he feels face the FA in righting the wrongs he feels they may have created in the modern game. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Zustand: Gut. Deutsche Erstausgabe. 506 (6) Seiten. 22 cm. Sehr guter Zustand. (« Brigitte »). - Jane Hamilton (born July 13, 1957) is an American novelist. Early life: Jane Hamilton grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, the youngest of five children. She won prizes for poetry and short stories throughout high school and college, but was always told that being a writer would not be a viable career. Because she was not a good speller, she did not believe she could be a copy editor or editor either.[1] Hamilton graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1979 as an English major. Career: Hamilton was accepted as an intern with Dell Publishing for Children after college and set out for New York with intention of becoming an editor. She reports that she stopped to visit a friend's apple orchard in Rochester, Wisconsin. It was there that she met her future husband, a partner in the orchard operation. Soon after, she moved to the orchard farmhouse, which allowed her the freedom to write during the off-season for harvesting. Despite rejection from the graduate programs she applied to, Hamilton kept writing in her spare time. In 1983, her short story, "My Own Earth" launched her career when an intern pulled it from a slush pile and passed it up to Harper's Magazine editor, Helen Rogan.[1] The publication of "My Own Earth" was soon followed by more success when her short story "Aunt Marj's Happy Ending" was published by Harper's Magazine in December 1983. "Aunt Marj's Happy Ending" later appeared in The Best American Short Stories 1984. Her first novel, The Book of Ruth, was published in 1988 and won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, Great Lakes College Association New Writers Award, and the Wisconsin Library Association Banta Book Award in 1989.[3] The Book of Ruth was an Oprah's Book Club selection in 1996, and it was the basis for a 2004 television film of the same title. In 1994, she published A Map of the World, which was adapted for a film in 1999 and the same year was also an Oprah's Book Club selection. Her third novel, The Short History of a Prince, published in 1998, was a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 1998.[4] This book was also shortlisted for the 1999 Orange Prize.[5] In 2000, Hamilton was named a Notable Wisconsin Author by the Wisconsin Library Association. All of her books are set, at least in part, in Wisconsin. "A Map of the World" is set in Racine County, Wis. Of her writing, novelist Laura Moriarty says: "I like Jane Hamilton for her compassionate portrayals of characters most people would ridicule, and the way her books show the beauty of rural life without romanticizing it." In a November 2006 interview with The Journal Times, Hamilton talked about her early inspiration for writing novels. As a student at Carleton College, she overheard a professor say she would write a novel one day. Hamilton had written only two short stories for the professor's class. Overhearing the conversation gave her confidence. "It had a lot more potency, the fact that I overheard it, rather than his telling me directly," she said. Hamilton is an alum of the Ragdale Foundation. . From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 850 Rosa Pappband mit Schutzumschlag, farbigen Vorsätzen und Lesebändchen.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This brand new title in Bradt's acclaimed UK regional Slow series is the only full guide to Cheshire, a county known for its abundance of black-and-white timbered buildings and which was put firmly on the map in the 1990s thanks to then-resident stars Posh and Becks. Cheshire is a county that confounds expectations, from the Cheshire Plain to the hills and moors of the Pennines and Peak District in the east and surprisingly dramatic sandstone ridges in the west, not to mention the Wirral Peninsula, flanked by the major estuaries of the rivers Mersey and Dee flowing into the Irish Sea. Home to premier league footballers it may be, but it is also a largely rural landscape and an area of farm shops, forests and falconries; meres, marinas and marshes. There is industrial and scientific heritage, too, ranging from Bronze-Age mining sites to the internationally important astronomical observatory and mighty Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. With this new Bradt guide, discover all of this and more: the county town of Chester with its fascinating Roman history, unique double-decker medieval shopping arcades and the most complete city walls in Britain; ruins of ancient castles; and reminders of the salt and silk industries that have been so important in the past. For a truly slow experience, Cheshire also offers a network of canals, perfect for waterside strolls or pootling along in a narrowboat, while Bradt's Slow Cheshire details information for walkers and cyclists, too. Also included in this guide are gardens and parks, grand stately homes and structural legacies of the past (such as Port Sunlight), engaging museums, attractions and events. Local food and drink is covered, along with all types of accommodation, from B&Bs and self-catering cottages to guesthouses and hotels. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

History of the historic Van Kampen Inn located in Walpack Township, Sussex county, New Jersey. The fieldstone inn was first built as a private residence circa 1746 by Harmon Rosekrans of the early Dutch settler family. While it was called an "inn" it was actually a "yaugh house:, that is a rural residence licenced under colonial law to provide food and shelter to travellers. During the French and Indian War, some 150 settlers found shelter at bthe inn at some point from Indian attacks. During the Ameircan Revolution, John Adams reportedly stayed there overnight on his way from Massachusetts to Philadelphia and General Gates quartered his troops on the land during a 1776 snowstorm on his way to the Battle of Trenton. The Inn is today operated under a jointg agreement between the National Parks Service and the Walpack Historical Society.

The magnificent country houses built in Britain between 1890 and 1939 were the last monuments to a vanishing age. Many of these great mammoths of domestic architecture were unsuited to the changes in economic and social priorities that followed the two world wars, and rapidly became extinct. Those that survive, however, provide tangible evidence of the life and death of an extraordinarily prosperous age. This book recounts the architectural and social history of this era, describing the clients, the architects, the styles and accoutrements of the country houses. The people who could afford them - the Carnegies, the Astors, the Leverhulmes - had grown rich by exploiting the new economic opportunities of the age, and the houses they built in the years before the First World War reflect the desire for two contrasting ways of life. The social country house was the setting for the opulent world associated with Edward VII. The romantic country house was simpler, more genuinely rural, for those who wanted to be in closer contact with the countryside and the vanishing rural crafts, or who wanted an idyll of the past that did not suggest the world of the motor car. These traditions lost coherence after the war, and the period ended with a number of spectacular, and often eccentric, houses. Some of the most remarkable were those that not only replicated the look of old buildings, but used genuinely old materials and even incorporated whole Tudor buildings moved from other places. This fascinating world, so vividly depicted in Evelyn Waugh's 'Brideshead Revisited', can now be viewed from a new perspective. 'The Last County Houses' will enlighten and entertain all those interested in glimpsing the lost life style of another age. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Pride: The Inside Story of Derby County in the 21st Century is the fascinating story of one of Britain's most tumultuous football teams, as told by the people at the heart of the club. Ryan Hills gained exclusive access to almost 50 former players, managers and board members to bring you the Rams' modern history. The move to Pride Park in 1997 was supposed to mark an exciting new chapter for the club. But despite initial success, things started to go wrong. Relegation from the Premier League caused huge financial strife, leading to the arrest of three board members. On the pitch, a single promotion brought the worst season in Derby's history and a 362-day wait for a win. Since that fateful season, the club have been on a cyclical and so far fruitless mission to return to the Premier League, while dressing-room turmoil, car crashes and a man named Bobby have stood in their way. Pride gives you the inside track on a football club that refuses to accept obscurity, as revealed by those who know it best. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
