Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine in yellow, yellow endpapers, top edge dyed purple. With the illustrated dust jacket. Very minor rubbing to ends, a very good copy indeed with the dust jacket only slightly chipped and creased at the edges and mildly dust-soiled, price clipped a little roughly. Illustrated title page. First US edition, sole printing, of this thriller by Princess Paul Troubetzkoy. The first edition was published in London in the preceding year - both US and UK versions are rare, with only 3 copies of each recorded in institutional holdings worldwide. The sensational jacket must, of course, be rarer still. The author was British novelist Rhoda Muriel Boddam (b. 1898), second wife of the Russian sculptor Prince Paul Troubezkoy (1866-1938). He was a prominent figure of the Belle Epoque, acquainted with Tolstoy, whose daughter Alexandra said of him: "Trubetskoy, a Russian educated in Italy, did some splendid little statues of Tolstoy - one of him on horseback. Father was very fond of him. A sweet and childlike person in addition to his great gifts, he read practically nothing, spoke little, all his life was wrapped up in sculpture. As a convinced vegetarian he would not eat meat but cried: 'Je ne mange pas de cadavre!' if anyone offered him some. In his studio in St. Petersburg there was a whole zoo: a bear, a fox, a horse, and a vegetarian wolf." Rhoda Muriel Boddam married the elderly Prince Troubetzkoy in 1931, and lived with him at 53 St James Square. She published a number of novels between 1933 and 1942, one of which is a dystopian fantasy Exodus A.D. (1934), produced in collaboration with the futurist artist C.R.W. Nevinson. Buch. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Little Man is a clumsy little man. He is always bumping into walls, stepping on toys, tripping over his own feet, and knocking things on the floor. But through a series of short misadventures--and with the help of those who love him--he learns that making mistakes is an important part of being human and that laughing at those mistakes is what helps a little boy grow into a little man.''Little Man's Misadventures is a heartfelt collection of inviting tales filled with humor and meaning that promises to grasp interest and spark imagination. Little Man's silliness is relatable, as are the lessons learned from his misadventures. Clemente reminds readers of the magic and innocence of childhood and the importance of paying attention to our families, our traditions, and the stories that will span generations when a sense of wonder is instilled in children.''--Julianne E. Riley, MA, Kindergarten Teacher''In Little Man's Misadventures, Crazy Uncle tells Little Man, 'If you can learn to laugh at the silly stuff you do, you won't feel so embarrassed. You may even realize that there's something good about things not going right. Sometimes things going wrong can be good too.' Throughout the book, this message and a supportive family validated how Little Man's misadventures helped him to become resilient, confident, and loving! A very relatable and enjoyable read for families with young children!''--Sara Humiston, Coordinator, Milford Family & Community NetworkM. Saverio Clemente is a husband and father of three: a little man, a little monster, and a little princess. He lives and writes in Massachusetts, where he and his brother grew up. R. L. Clemente is a proud (and crazy) uncle. He lives in New Hampshire where he is pursuing a career in nursing. In his free time, he enjoys the simple pleasures of reading, writing, drawing, and reflecting. 62 pp. Englisch. Neu. Artikel-Nr.: 9781532652318.

Octavo. Contemporary orange plain cloth. Front hinge repaired, split starting at bottom of rear hinge. A good copy. First edition, sole impression, a truly rare production of the Obelisk Press, with only three copies showing in institutional holdings worldwide (all in America). Petersburg there was a whole zoo: a bear, a fox, a horse, and a vegetarian wolf." The author of this rare novel married the elderly Prince Troubetzkoy in 1931, and lived with him at 53 St James Square. She published a number of novels between 1933 and 1942, one of which is a dystopian fantasy Exodus A.D. (1934), produced in collaboration with the futurist artist C.R.W. Nevinson. Neil Pearson gives a flavour of this novel in his book Obelisk: "Half O'Clock in Mayfair was published in 1938. Kahane had been introduced to the author in the Castiglione bar. Troubetzkoy's book was (according to Kahane) 'the record in novel form of a famous scandal, involving a murder or at least some form of homicide or suicide, which had shaken London a year or so before '. [It] is a highly competent dissection of London's atrophied high society of the late 1930s, ten years on from the zenith of the Bright Young Things. No longer bright or young, yesterday's debutantes rush round London from party to party in an increasingly desperate search for a husband, usually finding nothing but a short-lived oblivion in drink and drugs. Troubetzkoy can write and she understands her characters in all their sad vacuity." Pearson A50. Artikel-Nr.: 143574.

Scarce first edition with Jessie Willcox Smith's illustrations. With a whimsically decorated title-page and eight colour plates by Jessie Willcox Smith. 8vo, publisher's original beige cloth with a pictorial paste-down on the upper cover, framed in gilt and blue with blue lettering, and with gilt lettering to the spine, pictorially decorated endpapers. 203 pp. A good copy, internally still quite clean, the plates are all fine and bright, the binding a bit shaken, the front hinge weak, and mellowed with some rubbing and edge wear. FIRST EDITION WITH THESE ILLUSTRATIONS. A WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK BY JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH, and it is little wonder Scottish author George MacDonald is best remembered for his children’s stories. Having eleven children of his own no doubt gave MacDonald a great deal of practice with this sort of thing. PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN is his best known work other then AT THE BACK OF THE NORTH WIND. Anne Thaxter Eaton writes in 'A Critical History of Children's Literature' that The Princess and the Goblin "quietly suggest in every incident ideas of courage and honor." Artikel-Nr.: 29376.

8°, circa 16,8 x 10 cm. 3 ff., 172 pp., 2 ff., 6 pp. Half-calf with gilded spine and decorated covers (bound maybe around 1850) "Rare only edition of these letters (supposedly?) written by Elizabeth Craven (1750-1828) to one of her sons. We are unable to find an English edition and there is no mention of this book in the study on her literary work by Hans Ley, Die litterarische Tätigkeit der Lady Craven (Erlangen 1904). The anonymous editor claims to have found these letters "dans un porte-feuille, sur le chemin qui conduit de Fulham à Hammersmith". - Lady Craven at the time was rather notorious, her marriage to William Craven, 6th Baron Craven had fallen apart in 1780, she was rumoured to have entertained several affairs long before the divorce and in 1783 she was apparently the mistress of Charles Greville. As a young girl she had met Charles Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach who then invited her to his residence in Frankonia in 1786 where she became effectivly the first lady. When the wife of Charles Alexander died in 1791, the two got married in Lisbon and settled in England. Apart from plays and successful travel books she did later on publish memoirs and her letters to the last Margrave. - Our copy has the leaf C3* exchanged on slightly whiter paper. The relevant sentence is here: "Ce n'est pas ma faute si le mariage détruit tout principe même de son origine, de l'amour, la plus charmante de toutes les passions.". " "- Title a little darker, with a small scratch in the lower white margin (removed ownership entry), else only a little browned, mostly clean, rubbed. Artikel-Nr.: 6073.

A little rubbed at the extremities, front and rear blanks a little browned, toning to the text-block, overall very good. Lithographic portrait frontispiece of Luther by Black after Holbein, printed on india paper. First edition, this a presentation copy from the author to Victoria, the Princess Royal (1840-1901), Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, inscribed by the author and in an attractive presentation binding. Massie has inscribed on the first blank: "Her Royal Highness the 'Princess Royal' from the Translator"; with Victoria's attractive bookplate to the front pastedown, inked pressmarks verso of the front free, and ink stamp "Bibliothek der Kronprinzessin" from her period as Crown Princess of Germany 1861-88, verso of title page. Victoria married Prince Frederick William of Prussia, later Kaiser Frederick III, in 1856. Her father, Prince Albert, had himself been baptized into the Lutheran Evangelical Church. Victoria "was her father's favourite child and not unlike him in her clear mind, faith in logical argument, and intellectual, artistic, and scientific interests. Her father paid great attention to her education and to that of the next child, the future Edward VII: she responded, whereas he rebelled. A French governess, Mme Charlier, gave her fluent French, in addition to the German and English she naturally spoke. Her much loved English governess, Miss Hildyard (a parson's daughter, known as Tilla), gave her wide general reading. She never lost the respect for learning and scholars or the power of concentration which her education gave her. She was taught music, drawing, and watercolour painting, and performed with some skill in all" (ODNB). The author, Richard Massie (1771-1854) came from a distinguished Cheshire family, was educated at St Johns, Cambridge (BA 1794, MA 1805), and held the rectories of Eccleston, Aldford and St Bridget's, Chester. Martin Luther's Spiritual Songs played an important part in the dissemination of German hymnology in England, a process which could be said to have started with Thomas Carlyle in the 1830s. Massie would, no doubt, have presented his book to the young Princess Royal on publication. Artikel-Nr.: 133638.

1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Ornate letterhead printed in red and black, with engraving of a rising sun ('The Mark of Excellence'). Addressed to 'Messrs. Marcus Adams Ltd. | Child Photographers, | 43, Dover Street, | W.1.' The letter begins: 'I have in hand the production of a film somewhat of a national character, including all the episodes in the reigns of our Royal Family, from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee onwards, and I thought it would be a very nice idea to finish the film with a short length of little Princess Elizabeth. | I am sorry to say that the Duke and Duchess of York think that the Princess is too young to be filmed yet, but they are quite willing for me to reproduce the Princess from a still photograph, stating that you have the latest copies of the single photographs of Princess Elizabeth, and they have given me the rights to reproduce this in a short length of film.' He asks for 'one or two photographs of the little Princess' to be submitted, with a bill, adding that 'B. W. Brooke, Esq., The Comptroller of the Duke of York's household asked me to state that I have his authority to obtain this photograph from you.' From the Adams family papers. Artikel-Nr.: 17557.

Buch. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - EXCERPT FROM THE BOOKI was born in 1864 at the old house known as 'Sen's House' which my great-grandfather built at Coolootola, a part of Calcutta where many of our family lived. My birth was always remembered in connection with a storm which occurred when I was six days old, a most important time to a Hindu baby, for then the Creator is supposed to visit the home, and write upon its forehead the little one's fate. Perhaps people will think the stormy weather in the beginning signified a stormy future for me.No girl could have been more fortunate in her parents than I. My father, the great Keshub Chunder Sen, is considered one of the most remarkable men India has ever produced, and my dear mother belonged to the best type of Hindu woman. Gentle, loving, and self-denying, her whole life was beautiful in its goodness and its simplicity. The story of a great religious movement is not one which can be told at length in a book of memories. The religion for which my father suffered and which will be for ever connected with his name is the Brahmo or Religion of the New Dispensation, a religion of tolerance and charity. To quote my father's words, 'The New Dispensation in India neither shuts out God's light from the rest of the world, nor does it run counter to any of those marvellous dispensations of His mercy which were made manifest in ancient times. It simply shows a new interpretation of His eternal goodness, an Indian version and application of His universal love.' 154 pp. Englisch. Neu. Artikel-Nr.: 9781774810293.

8vo in fours, pp. [xii], 74,[2] epilogue; disbound. First edition. First performed at Covent Garden in March 1775. The plot is borrowed from Aphra Behn's The Young King, or the Mistake (1683). The play is dedicated to 'Mrs Verelst', no doubt the wife of Harry Verelst (d. 1785), recently returned as Governor of Bengal. She was Ann, daughter of Josiah Wordsworth of Doncaster; they lived at Aston Hall, near Sheffield. John Hoole was a good friend of Samuel Johnson, who contributed in greater or lesser measure to many of his works, and in December 1774 he sent this tragedy to Johnson for his opinion, because he was having trouble with the 'Managers and Performers' - presumably they wished to alter or cut sections against his will. Johnson's response is recorded in his letter returning the MS to Hoole, apparently the same day he received the MS: 'I have returned your play which you will find underlined with red where there was a word which I did not like. The red will be washed off with a little water.' He goes on to praise the plot as 'well formed', the suspense 'affecting' and 'the passionate parts so properly interposed, that I have no doubt of its success' (19 December 1774). Alas, Johnson's enthusiasm was unjustified and the play achieved a run of only nine nights; Hoole returned part of the money he had received for the copyright, feeling that the bookseller 'ought not to be at a loss'. Although the implication is that Johnson merely underlined some words in Hoole's MS, he clearly influenced the composition of the work, so it is arguable that it should be included in his bibliography, but it is not in Courtney & Nichol Smith, Chapman & Hazen, nor even in Fleeman. See Redford, Letters of Johnson II 159-60; and Boswell (ed. Hill-Powell) II 289. Artikel-Nr.: 13680.

Quarto (290 x 238 mm). Mid-19th century half calf, brown bead-grain cloth sides, title gilt to spine on red morocco label, raised bands to spine, red sprinkled edges, light-red endpapers. Binding a little rubbed, some spotting to leather around the spine, a little peeling to leather at tips, light browning to text block. A very good copy. Hand-coloured stipple engraved frontispiece and 11 similar plates. First edition, signed by "Elizabeth" on the half-title. Published at the height of the Georgian volunteer movement for the war against Napoleon, this book contains a series of engraving based on drawings by Princess Elizabeth, daughter of George III, showing cupid training to fight the French. Each picture depicting scenes of "Genius, Loyalty, and Patriotism" is accompanied by a short poem by Thomas Park, an antiquary and bibliographer, who had published his Sonnets and Other Poems in 1897 and was admired by the poet Southey, who said his "knowledge of English bibliography, and English poetry in particular, have never been surpassed" (ODNB). In the period 1803-04 almost 400,000 people enrolled as volunteers to fight for Britain. This books is a good illustration of the patriotic fervour in the time "when every Briton who handles the sword or pen, is loudly called upon to exercise them in defence of all that can be held dear" (Preface). At the time, Princess Elizabeth was living a secluded and sedentary life, confined to what was known as the "Nunnery" as her father's madness grew worse. She occupied herself with art, and drawing pictures of Cupids became something of a speciality. In 1804, Edward Harding, the royal librarian, published this book, with engravings by his protegé W. N. Gardiner, a man of great "eccentricities of dress, behaviour, and conversation" (ODNB) and, for a while, a successful bookseller and engraver with a shop on Pall Mall. Eventually marrying in 1818, Elizabeth escaped the royal home at the age of 48. Park devoted himself to antiquarian work and parish life. This book was to be Gardiner's last work. He gave up his work due to eye trouble and then "his wife and child having died, lost interest in his appearance and became a recluse", finally committing suicide in 1814 (ODNB). Abbey, Life, 441. Taschenbuch. Neu - George MacDonald, ein enger Freund Lewis Carolls, geb. 1824 in Schottland, studierte Theologie und arbeitete als Lehrer und Prediger, bevor er sich ausschließlich der Schriftstellerei widmete. George MacDonald starb 1905 an Tuberkulose.[^]3{#}Princess Irene lives in a castle in a wild and lonely mountainous region. One day she discovers a steep and winding stairway leading to a bewildering labyrinth of unused passages with closed doors - and a further stairway. What lies at the top Can the ring the princess is given protect her against the lurking menace of the boglins from under the mountain [^]23{#}CHAPTER 1 Why the Princess Has a Story about Her There was once a little princess whose father was king over a great country full of mountains and valleys. His palace was built upon one of the mountains and was very grand and beautiful. The princess, whose name was Irene, was born there, but she was sent soon after her birth, because her mother was not very strong, to be brought up by country people in a large house, half castle, half farmhouse, on the side of another mountain, about halfway between its base and its peak. The princess was a sweet little creature and at the time my story begins was about eight years old, I think, but she got older very fast. Her face was fair and pretty, with eyes like two bits of night sky, each with a star dissolved in the blue. Those eyes, you would have thought, must have known they came from there, so often were they turned up in that direction. The ceiling of her nursery was blue with stars in it, as like the sky as they could make it. But I doubt if ever she saw the real sky with the stars in it, for a reason, which I had better mention at once. These mountains were full of hollow places underneath, huge caverns and winding ways, some with water running through them and some shining with all colors of the rainbow when a light was taken in. There would not have been much known about them had there not been mines there, great deep pits, with long galleries and passages running off from them, which had been dug to get at the ore of which the mountains were full. In the course of digging the miners came upon many of these natural caverns. A few of them had far-off openings out on the side of a mountain or into a ravine. Now in these subterranean caverns lived a strange race of beings, called by some gnomes, by some kobolds, by some goblins. There was a legend current in the country that at one time they lived above ground and were very like other people. But for some reason or other, concerning which there were different legendary theories, the king had laid what they thought too severe taxes upon them, or required observances of them they did not like, or had begun to treat them with more severity in some way or other, and to impose stricter laws; and the consequence was that they had all disappeared from the face of the country. According to the legend, however, instead of going to some other country they had all taken refuge in the subterranean caverns, whence they never came out but at night, and then seldom showed themselves in any numbers and never to many people at once. It was only in the least frequented and most difficult parts of the mountains that they were said to gather, even at night in the open air. Those who had caught sight of any of them said that they had greatly altered in the course of generations; and no wonder, seeing they lived away from the sun, in cold and wet and dark places. They were now, not ordinarily ugly, but either absolutely hideous or ludicrously grotesque both in face and form. There was no invention, they said, of the most lawless imagination expressed by pen or pencil, that could surpass the extravagance of their appearance. And as they grew misshapen in body, they had grown in knowledge and cleverness and now were able to do things no mortal could see the possibility of. But as they grew in cunning, they grew in mischief, and their great delight was in every way they could think of to annoy the people who lived in the open-air story above them. They had enough of affection left for each other to preserve them from being absolutely cruel for cruelty's sake to those that came in their way; but still they so heartily cherished the ancestral grudge against those who occupied their former possession, and especially against the descendants of the king who had caused their expulsion, that they sought every opportunity of tormenting them in ways that were as odd as their inventors; and although dwarfed and misshapen, they ha 272 pp. Englisch. Her family had been relatively obscure until her father, Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, was chosen with the consent of the great powers to succeed his distant cousin, Frederick VII, to the Danish throne. At the age of sixteen, she was chosen as the future wife of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, the heir apparent of Queen Victoria. They married eighteen months later in 1863, the same year her father became king of Denmark as Christian IX and her brother was appointed to the vacant Greek throne as George I. She was Princess of Wales from 1863 to 1901, the longest anyone has ever held that title, and became generally popular; her style of dress and bearing were copied by fashion-conscious women. Largely excluded from wielding any political power, she unsuccessfully attempted to sway the opinion of British ministers and her husband's family to favour Greek and Danish interests. Her public duties were restricted to uncontroversial involvement in charitable work. On the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Albert Edward became king-emperor as Edward VII, with Alexandra as queen-empress consort. She held the status until Edward's death in 1910. She greatly distrusted her nephew, German Emperor Wilhelm II, and supported her son during World War I, in which Britain and its allies fought Germany. Left to right: Dagmar, Frederick, Valdemar, Christian IX, Queen Louise, Thyra, George and Alexandra Princess Alexandra Caroline Marie Charlotte Louise Julia, or "Alix", as her immediate family knew her, was born at the Yellow Palace, an 18th-century town house at 18 Amaliegade, right next to the Amalienborg Palace complex in Copenhagen.[1] Her father was Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and her mother was Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel.[2] Although she was of royal blood,[3] her family lived a comparatively normal life. They did not possess great wealth; her father's income from an army commission was about £800 per year and their house was a rent-free grace and favour property.[4] Occasionally, Hans Christian Andersen was invited to call and tell the children stories before bedtime.[5] In 1848, King Christian VIII of Denmark died and his only son, Frederick ascended the throne. Frederick was childless, had been through two unsuccessful marriages, and was assumed to be infertile. A succession crisis arose as Frederick ruled in both Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein, and the succession rules of each territory differed. In Holstein, the Salic law prevented inheritance through the female line, whereas no such restrictions applied in Denmark. Holstein, being predominantly German, proclaimed independence and called in the aid of Prussia. In 1852, the great powers called a conference in London to discuss the Danish succession. An uneasy peace was agreed, which included the provision that Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg would be Frederick's heir in all his dominions and the prior claims of others (who included Christian's own mother-in-law, brother-in-law and wife) were surrendered.[6][7] Prince Christian was given the title Prince of Denmark and his family moved into a new official residence, Bernstorff Palace. Although the family's status had risen, there was little or no increase in their income and they did not participate in court life at Copenhagen as they refused to meet Frederick's third wife and former mistress, Louise Rasmussen, because she had an illegitimate child by a previous lover.[8] Alexandra shared a draughty attic bedroom with her sister, Dagmar (later Empress of Russia), made her own clothes and waited at table along with her sisters.[9] Alexandra and Dagmar were given swimming lessons by the Swedish pioneer of women's swimming, Nancy Edberg.[10] At Bernstorff, Alexandra grew into a young woman; she was taught English by the English chaplain at Copenhagen and was confirmed in Christiansborg Palace.[11] She was devout throughout her life, and followed High Church practice.[12] Marriage and family[edit] See also: Wedding dress of Princess Alexandra of Denmark The Landing of HRH The Princess Alexandra at Gravesend, 7 March 1863, by Henry Nelson O'Neil Princess Alexandra of Denmark and t. He began his career as an architectural photographer for the British Archaeological Society and took photographs for books by the antiquarian C.E. Keyser. With fellow photographers Bertram Park and Parks' wife Yvonne Gregory, Adams formed the "Three Photographers" group in 1920. Based at 43 Dover Street, Mayfair, they each worked independently, but shared use of printing, retouching and darkroom staff. Gaining notability for his portraits of children Adams took the first official photographs of the Duchess of York and her daughter Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II). His 1934 photograph of Princess Elizabeth at the age of 8 was used as the portrait for the $20 banknote of the 1935 Series of banknotes of the Canadian dollar. He continued his work as a photographer of royal children until a sitting with Princess Anne in 1956. Other notable children photographed by Adams included Christopher Robin Milne. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Tall 8vo, 228 x 133 mms., pp, xiii [xiv blank, xv "The Persian Dedication," xvi blank], 348, recently recased in blue boards, paper label on spine; text a little browned, but a good copy. This rather laboured satire on Princess Augusta of Wales (1796 - 1817), was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (later King George IV), and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. Had she outlived both her grandfather King George III and her father, she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom; but she died at the age of 21, predeceasing them both. It was reviewed at some length in The Critical Review for 1816, but without ever once disclosing that the work was not a satire: "The author of Gulzara is not deficient in humour, and we are not and then reminded of the stile of the very best writer in this kind [possibly Byron], in any language: but no such pretensions are made: the work is instructive, entertaining, and now and then satirical, and that is all perhaps that the writer intended." The reviewer in The Monthly Review was a bit more forthcoming about the disguised Gulzara: "[A]nd the actions of the Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses of Persia and Tartary, in some former indeterminate age, may be clearly identified with those of the Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses of Great Britain and France in an age not very distant from the nineteenth century." 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To "my dear Black": "Noch nicht! noch nicht! my dear Black! I am a little behind hand - curious aint it! That confounded Peacock Room has nearly ruined me and I have had to work frightfully to make up for it. It will be all right directly of course but I am woefully pushed. - Beseech HRH to be indulgent and appoint some day next week - say Saturday or Friday afternoon at about 5 'o'clock and I will try to be ready for her and shall be so enchanted to see her interest in what I have been doing - I think you will like the pictures - manage this my dear Black for your [xxx] [Whistler's butterfly monogram]. Just write a line to say it is all right". - The letter discusses a proposed visit from Princess Louise, the daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquis of Lorne. The Princess was herself an artist - a sculptor of note - and Whistler's correspondence indicates she took a keen interest in his work. The two pencil sketches appear to have been drawn before the letter was written. If they are by Whistler, we can assume that they have something to do with a commission he was working on for Princess Louise. The drawings seem to be preliminary sketches for a crest, which features a dog and crossed swords. - The stupendously opulent and beautiful Peacock Room was painted by James A. McNeill Whistler during late 1876 and early 1877. The entire room is decorated in oil colour and gold on wood, leather and canvas, its Orientalist theme crowned by Whistler's painting The Princess from the Land of Porcelain. The Peacock Room is now installed in the Freer Gallery of Art (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington D.C., but was originally designed for use as the dining room in the London residence of Frederick R. Leyland, a wealthy English shipping magnate. In 1904, after the house had changed hands, the American Charles L. Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art, was able to purchase the contents of the room, have it dismantled and shipped to his home in Detroit, where it was installed in an addition to his home in 1905. In 1919 it was once more dismantled and transported to its permanent location in the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. - Slightly stained. Artikel-Nr.: 45562.

Letter One: 12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. 75 lines of text. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Expresses regret at 'Morten Edens melancholy death, so young & so clever as he was'. 'There is great talk of Peace. We hardly know if to believe it - few will be sorry should the news prove to be true, as I think most of us have had enough fighting. Apparently refers to his sweetheart under a cypher. She has not written to him, but 'London gaieties have little time for correspondence'. 'The weather here is something awful - cold & wet, fogs & sleet. The place is a sea of mud up to your knees without exaggeration.' His father has sent him food and clothing. The officers are 'getting up a school for the men as the weather is too bad for drill', but 'there is no scarcity of work', with the roads requiring constant repair and 'the Minie Rifle Instruction' going on daily. 'There was a good deal of firing on Sunday night down by the Tchernaya - and we rather expected an attack however it all ended in Smoke.' The docks, which he considers 'the most splendidly finished' he has ever seen, 'built up of that beautiful red & blue granite', have 'all been blown up'. Letter Two: 12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. 67 lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with 6 cm vertical closed tear through both leaves. Containing an interesting description of 'Spring (horse) races' which took place 'in the Valley of the Tchernaya' as a result of an armistice. The allied armies crowded the banks on one side of the river, and on the other 'the Russians let loose for the occasion'. There was much bartering - 'Knifes [sic], Pipes, Tobacco, Money and various other articles [.] thrown across the river attached to a stone, or enveloped in mud. The river is not more than 2 or 3 yards wide at some places, so that we could have plenty of conversation with our Enemies, without breaking the "General order". The French were allowed by their Chiefs to cross and they appeared to get on capitally with the Russian Officers'. The French fired 101 guns in a general salute to the heir to their emperor, and the British returned the salute with the same number. Regarding the outcome of 'the conferences' hears that 'you people in England are very pugilistic and are determined to have war if you can'. Considers that the British Army 'was never in better condition for a campaign', and thinks it 'a pitty to stop just now'. Gibson was still alive in 1864, when he married Georgina Eliza, daughter of William Clarke. Note: "The 49th was at the battles of Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol during which three Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the Regiment." Artikel-Nr.: 8933.
