In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Good. The 50th anniversary edition of this classic World War 2 adventure set in south-east Asia. February, 1942: Singapore lies burning and shattered, defenceless before the conquering hordes of the Japanese Army, as the last boat slips out of the harbour into the South China Sea. On board are a desperate group of people, each with a secret to guard, each willing to kill to keep that secret safe. Who or what is the dissolute Englishman, Farnholme? The elegant Dutch planter, Van Effen? The strangely beautiful Eurasian girl, Gudrun? The slave trader, Siran? The smiling and silent Nicholson who is never without his gun? Only one thing is certain: the rotting tramp steamer is a floating death trap, carrying a cargo of human TNT. Dawn sees them far out to sea but with the first murderous dive bombers already aimed at their ship. Thus begins an ordeal few are to survive, a nightmare succession of disasters wrought by the hell-bent Japanese, the unrelenting tropical sun and by the survivors themselves, whose hatred and bitterness divides them one against the other. Written after the acclaimed and phenomenally successful HMS Ulysses and The Guns of Navarone, this was MacLeans third book, and it contains all the hallmarks of those other two classics. Rich with stunning visual imagery, muscular narrative power, brutality, courage and breathtaking excitement, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of South by Java Head offers readers a long-denied chance to enjoy one of the greatest war novels ever written. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. One of the most remarkable fossil finds in history occurred in Laetoli, Tanzania, in 1974, when anthropologist Andrew Hill (diving to the ground to avoid a lump of elephant dung thrown by a colleague) came face to face with a set of ancient footprints captured in stone-the earliest recorded steps of out far-off human ancestors, some three million years old. Today we can see a recreation of the making of the Laetoli footprints at the American Museum of Natural History, in a stunning diorama which depicts two of our human forebears walking side by side through a snowy landscape of volcanic ash. But how do we know what these three-million-year-old relatives looked like? How have we reconstructed the eons-long journey from our first ancient steps to where we stand today? In short, how do we know what we think we know about human evolution. In The Fossil Trail, Ian Tattersall, the head of the Anthropology Department at the American Museum of Natural History, takes us on a sweeping tour of the study of human evolution, offering a colourful history of fossil discoveries and a revealing insider's look at how these finds have been interpreted -and misinterpreted-through time. All the major figures and discoveries are here. We meet Lamark and Cuvier and Darwin (we learn that Darwin's theory of evolution, though a bombshell, was very congenial to a Victorian ethos of progress), right up to modern theorists such as Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould. Tattersall describes Dubois's work in Java, the may discoveries in South Africa by pioneers such as Raymond Dart and Robert Broom, Louis and Mary Leakey's work at Olduvai Gorge, Don Johanson's famous discovery of "Lucy" (a 3.4 million-year-old femail hominid, some 40 per cent complete), and the more recent discovery of the "Turkana boy", even more complete than "Lucy" and remarkably similar to modern human skeletons. He discusses the may techniques available to analyse finds, from Flourine analysis (developed in the 1950s, it exposed Piltdown as a hoax) and a radiocarbon dating to such modern techniques as electron spin resonance and the analysis of human mitochondrial DNA. He gives us a succinct picture of what we presently think our family tree looks like, with at least three general and perhaps a dozen species through time (though he warns that this greatly underestimates the actual diversity of hominids over the past two million or so years). And he paints a vivid, insider's portrait of paleontology, the dogged work in the broiling sun, searching for a tooth or a fractured corner of bone amid stone litter and shadows, with no guarantee of ever finding anything. And perhaps most important, Tattersall looks at all these great researchers and discoveries with the context of their social and scientific milieu, to reveal the insidious ways that the received wisdom can shape how we interpret fossil findings, that what we expect to find colours our understanding of what we do find. Refreshingly opinionated and vividly narrated. The Fossil Trail is the only book available to general readers that offers a full history of our study of human evolution, A fascinating story with intriguing turns along the way, this well-illustrated volume is essential reading for anyone curious about our human origins. spin resonance and the analysis of human. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. You're not alone. At any given moment, somewhere in the world someone struggles with the same software design problems you have. You know you don't want to reinvent the wheel (or worse, a flat tire), so you look to Design Patterns--the lessons learned by those who've faced the same problems. With Design Patterns, you get to take advantage of the best practices and experience of others, so that you can spend your time on.something else. Something more challenging. Something more complex. Something more fun. You want to learn about the patterns that matter--why to use them, when to use them, how to use them (and when NOT to use them). But you don't just want to see how patterns look in a book, you want to know how they look "in the wild". In their native environment. In other words, in real world applications. You also want to learn how patterns are used in the Java API, and how to exploit Java's built-in pattern support in your own code. You want to learn the real OO design principles and why everything your boss told you about inheritance might be wrong (and what to do instead). You want to learn how those principles will help the next time you're up a creek without a design paddle pattern. Most importantly, you want to learn the "secret language" of Design Patterns so that you can hold your own with your co-worker (and impress cocktail party guests) when he casually mentions his stunningly clever use of Command, Facade, Proxy, and Factory in between sips of a martini. You'll easily counter with your deep understanding of why Singleton isn't as simple as it sounds, how the Factory is so often misunderstood, or on the real relationship between Decorator, Facade and Adapter. With Head First Design Patterns, you'll avoid the embarrassment of thinking Decorator is something from the "Trading Spaces" show. Best of all, in a way that won't put you to sleep! We think your time is too important (and too short) to spend it struggling with academic texts. If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect--a visually-rich format designed for the way your brain works. Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science, and learning theory, Head First Design Patterns will load patterns into your brain in a way that sticks. In a way that lets you put them to work immediately. In a way that makes you better at solving software design problems, and better at speaking the language of patterns with others on your team. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

First edition of this superb selection from the candid works of photojournalist Gotthard Schuh, with 128 rich full-page and double-page photogravures of everyday people, including his famous âEnfant javanais jouant.â Schuhâs early work as freelance photojournalist for several magazines, including "Paris Match" and "Life," led him throughout Europe and as far as Indonesia (which resulted in the photobook "Iles des Dieux: Java, Sumatra, Bali" in 1954). From 1941 to 1960 he served as photo editor at "Neuen Zürcher Zeitung" and in 1951 he and Swiss photographers Paul Senn, Werner Bischof and Jakob Tuggener co-founded the College of Swiss Photographers. In this work, Schuh presents the realities of daily life through a selection of his early photographs, including his two most famous: âEnfant javanais jouantâ (a boy stretched out playing a game), and âDanseuses sacrà es de Baliâ (temple dancer), both taken in Indonesia in 1938-39 and first published in "Insel der Gà tter" (1940). Third edition (first 1900) of this ethnological study on female clothing and dress, by the controversial German physician Carl Heinrich Stratz (1858-1924). Stratz came to prominence with his controversial and complex work of 1897, 'Die frauen auf Java'. The result of a five year stay on the island of Java, his gynaecological work of 1897 has come under critical review by academics, as an example of several works at the turn of the century termed as 'pornographic racial taxonomy'. It was to be the first of several ethnological works published by Stratz. As in his previous works, several of the photographs seen in the present work depict naked or semi-naked women, often fully exposed. Contained as they were within a strictly scientific study, contemporary readers were reassured the images could be viewed without fear of censure. His work of 1901, Die Rassenschönheit des Weibes, continued his interest in the study of ethnicity in terms of 'beauty', concluding that none could measure up against the standard of white, feminine beauty. This work has also become the focus of recent academic criticism and censure.

In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: gut. 2009. I was tasked, at short notice, to develop an Android application in a couple of weeks and pretty quickly turned to Amazon to see what books I had available to me to help after seeing the state of Google's existing documentation. And frankly I'm glad I did. This book is well layout, simple to understand and great for getting an existing Java developer up to speed with Android's unique application model - without spending hundreds of hours banging your head against the Google documentation. Not only that but I noticed a (pretty minor) error in my printing and got a 6 month subscription to the CommonsWare e-print site - which has given me at least 2 updated versions of the book so far! With code examples online and a writer who's clearly very involved with the Android community - I can't see a reason not to recommend this book to an developer with experience of Java. However, if you don't fall into that category - I would suggest getting some experience with Java first (there are plenty of books which can help there) - before getting hold of this book. If you're new to mobile development or new to cell phone development, The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development will get you started fast. It covers all of the basics, and gets you far enough to be able to be productive using Google's documentation. What more could you ask? Android, the next-generation open mobile platform from Google and the Open Handset Alliance, is poised to become a significant player in the mobile device market. The Android platform gives developers a fair bit of control while still supporting a familiar programming language. However, the frameworks, GUI widgets, and development model is different than any other mobile platform out there. That's where this book comes in. Spanning 466 pages, The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development covers a wide range of Android capabilities and APIs, from creating simple user interfaces, to supporting long-running background processes, through the advanced location tracking and mapping features. Along the way, it covers how to embed the WebKit Web browser in your application, how to have your application use data from other installed applications (and vice versa!) or off the Internet, and how to integrate with the built-in on-device search engine. It will help you more quickly climb the Android learning curve, so you can create the "killer app" you've dreamed ofor perhaps just a quick-and-dirty application for you and your friends. In englischer Sprache. 468 pages. 23,2 x 19 x 2,6 cm.
