Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The subject of partial differential equations holds an exciting and special position in mathematics. Partial differential equations were not consciously created as a subject but emerged in the 18th century as ordinary differential equations failed to describe the physical principles being studied. The subject was originally developed by the major names of mathematics, in particular, Leonard Euler and Joseph-Louis Lagrange who studied waves on strings; Daniel Bernoulli and Euler who considered potential theory, with later developments by Adrien-Marie Legendre and Pierre-Simon Laplace; and Joseph Fourier's famous work on series expansions for the heat equation. Many of the greatest advances in modern science have been based on discovering the underlying partial differential equation for the process in question. James Clerk Maxwell, for example, put electricity and magnetism into a unified theory by establishing Maxwell's equations for electromagnetic theory, which gave solutions for prob lems in radio wave propagation, the diffraction of light and X-ray developments. Schrodinger's equation for quantum mechanical processes at the atomic level leads to experimentally verifiable results which have changed the face of atomic physics and chemistry in the 20th century. In fluid mechanics, the Navier Stokes' equations form a basis for huge number-crunching activities associated with such widely disparate topics as weather forecasting and the design of supersonic aircraft. Inevitably the study of partial differential equations is a large undertaking, and falls into several areas of mathematics.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 304 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The most frequently used method for the numerical integration of parabolic differential equa tions is the method of lines, where one first uses a discretization of space derivatives by finite differences or finite elements and then uses some time-stepping method for the the solution of resulting system of ordinary differential equations. Such methods are, at least conceptually, easy to perform. However, they can be expensive if steep gradients occur in the solution, stability must be controlled, and the global error control can be troublesome. This paper considers a simultaneaus discretization of space and time variables for a one-dimensional parabolic equation on a relatively long time interval, called 'time-slab'. The discretization is repeated or adjusted for following 'time-slabs' using continuous finite element approximations. In such a method we utilize the efficiency of finite elements by choosing a finite element mesh in the time-space domain where the finite element mesh has been adjusted to steep gradients of the solution both with respect to the space and the time variables. In this way we solve all the difficulties with the classical approach since stability, discretization error estimates and global error control are automatically satisfied. Such a method has been discussed previously in [3] and [4]. The related boundary value techniques or global time integration for systems of ordinary differential equations have been discussed in several papers, see [12] and the references quoted therein.Springer Vieweg in Springer Science + Business Media, Abraham-Lincoln-Straße 46, 65189 Wiesbaden 176 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -During the week of December 8-13, 1984, a conference on Multi-Grid Methods was held at the Mathematisches Forschungs institut (Mathematical Research Institute) in Oberwolfach. The conference was suggested by the GAMM-Committee 'Effiziente numerische Verfahren fUr partielle Differentialgleichungen'. We were pleased to have 42 participants from 12 countries. These proceedings contain some contributions to the confe rence. The centre of interest in the more theoretical contri butions were exact convergence proofs for multi-grid method. Here, the theoretical foundation for the application of the method to the Stokes equations, the biharmonic equation in its formulation as a mixed finite element problem and other more involved problems were investigated. Moreover, improvements and new attacks for getting quantitative results on convergence rates were reported. Another series of contributions was concerned with the de velopment of highly efficient and fast algorithms for various partial differential equations. Also in this framework, the Stokes and the biharmonic equations were investigated. Other lectures treated problems from fluid mechanics (as Navier Stokes and Euler equations), the dam-problem and eigenvalue problems. The editors would like to thank Professor M. Barner, the director of Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach for making this conference possible. D. Braess, Bochum W. Hackbusch, Kiel U. Trottenberg, St. Augustin v CONTENTS O. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The GAMM Committee for 'Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations' organises seminars on subjects concerning the algorithmic treatment of par tial differential equations. The topics are discretisation methods like the finite element and the boundary element method for various types of applications in structural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to the advanced solution methods. The series of such seminars was continued in 1994, January 14-16, with the 10th Kiel-Seminar on the special topic Fast Solvers for Flow Problems at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. The seminar was attended by 100 scientist from 9 countries. 23 lectures were given, including two invited survey lectures. The central topic of most of the contributions are the Navier-Stokes equations. The authors discuss robust methods, parallel implementations, defect correction techniques, adaptive methods including error estimators, domain decompositions and FEM-BEM coupling. The invited lectures concern the hierarchical multigrid method for unstruc tured grids and structured adaptive finite-volume multigrid for compressible flows.Springer Vieweg in Springer Science + Business Media, Abraham-Lincoln-Straße 46, 65189 Wiesbaden 304 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Despite efforts of more than centuries, turbulence phenomena is categorized as an unsolved problem. Turbulence is part of everyday's life. The majority of flows of industrial and technological applications are turbulent; natural flows are invariably so. There are many important and interesting physical phenomena which are connected with turbulent flows. Turbulence is observed in natural and engineering applications such as in weather prediction, air pollution, water pollution, aerodynamics and heat exchangers. This work considers an accurate and reliable solutions of turbulent flows. It is concerned with one of the most promising approaches to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows, the subgrid eddy viscosity models. We analyze both continuous and discontinuous finite element approximation of the new subgrid eddy viscosity model. This approach has the advantage that the diffusivity is introduced only on the small scales of the flow. Numerical test shows the new stabilization technique is robust and efficient in solving Navier-Stokes equations for a wide range of Reynolds numbers.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 80 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The GAMM-Commi ttee for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics (GAMM-Fachausschuss für Numerische Methoden in der Strömungsmechanik) has sponsored the organization of a GAMM Workshop dedicated to the numerical simulation of three dimensional incompressible unsteady viscous laminar flows to test Navier-Stokes solvers. The Workshop was held in Paris from June 12th to June 14th, 1991 at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts et Metiers. Two test problems were set up. The first one is the flow in a driven-lid parallelepipedic cavity at Re = 3200 . The second problem is a flow around a prolate spheroid at incidence. These problems are challenging as fully transient solutions are expected to show up. The difficulties for meaningful calculations come from both space and temporal discretizations which have to be sufficiently accurate to resol ve detailed structures like Taylor-Görtler-like vortices and the appropriate time development. Several research teams from academia and industry tackled the tests using different formulations (veloci ty-pressure, vortici ty velocity), different numerical methods (finite differences, finite volumes, finite elements), various solution algorithms (splitting, coupled, . ), various solvers (direct, iterative, semi-iterative) with preconditioners or other numerical speed-up procedures. The results show some scatter and achieve different levels of efficiency. The Workshop was attended by about 25 scientists and drove much interaction between the participants. The contributions in these proceedings are presented in alphabetical order according to the first author, first for the cavi ty problem and then for the prolate spheroid problem. No definite conclusions about benchmark solutions can be drawn.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The last decade has seen a dramatic increase of our abilities to solve numerically the governing equations of fluid mechanics. In design aerodynamics the classical potential-flow methods have been complemented by higher modelling-level methods. Euler solvers, and for special purposes, already Navier-Stokes solvers are in use. The authors of this book have been working on the solution of the Euler equations for quite some time. While the first two of us have worked mainly on algorithmic problems, the third has been concerned off and on with modelling and application problems of Euler methods. When we started to write this book we decided to put our own work at the center of it. This was done because we thought, and we leave this to the reader to decide, that our work has attained over the years enough substance in order to justify a book. The problem which we soon faced, was that the field still is moving at a fast pace, for instance because hyper sonic computation problems became more and more important.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at the Fourth European Multigrid Conference, held in Amsterdam, July 6-9,1993. There were 78 registered participants from 14 different countries, and 56 presentations were given. The preceding conferences in this series were held in Cologne (1981, 1985) and in Bonn (1990). Also at the other side of the Atlantic special multigrid conferences are held regularly, at intervals of two years, always in Copper Mountain, Colorado, US. The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods took place in April, 1993. Circumstances prevented us from putting a larger time interval between the Copper and Amsterdam meetings. The next European meeting is planned in 1996, a year later than the next Copper Meeting. When the first multigrid conference was held in 1981 there was no doubt about the usefulness of a conference dedicated specially to multigrid, because multigrid was a new and relatively unexplored subject, still in a pioneering stage, and pursued by specialists. The past twenty years have shown a rapid growth in theoretical understanding, useful applications and widespread acceptance of multi grid in the applied disciplines. Hence, one might ask whether there is still a need today for conferences specially dedicated to multigrid. The general consensus is that the answer is affirmative. New issues have arisen that are best addressed or need also be addressed from a special multigrid point of view.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The method of. fractional steps, known familiarly as the method oi splitting, is a remarkable technique, developed by N. N. Yanenko and his collaborators, for solving problems in theoretical mechanics numerically. It is applicable especially to potential problems, problems of elasticity and problems of fluid dynamics. Most of the applications at the present time have been to incompressible flow with free bound aries and to viscous flow at low speeds. The method offers a powerful means of solving the Navier-Stokes equations and the results produced so far cover a range of Reynolds numbers far greater than that attained in earlier methods. Further development of the method should lead to complete numerical solutions of many of the boundary layer and wake problems which at present defy satisfactory treatment. As noted by the author very few applications of the method have yet been made to problems in solid mechanics and prospects for answers both in this field and other areas such as heat transfer are encouraging. As the method is perfected it is likely to supplant traditional relaxation methods and finite element methods, especially with the increase in capability of large scale computers. The literal translation was carried out by T. Cheron with financial support of the Northrop Corporation. The editing of the translation was undertaken in collaboration with N. N. Yanenko and it is a plea sure to acknowledge his patient help and advice in this project. The edited manuscript was typed, for the most part, by Mrs.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book aims at introducing students to the numerical approximation of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). One of the difficulties of this subject is to identify the right trade-off between theoretical concepts and their use in practice. With that collection of examples and exercises we try to address this issue by illustrating 'standard' examples which focus on basic concepts of Numerical Analysis, as well as problems derived from practical applications which the student is encouraged to formalize in terms of PDEs, analyze and solve. The latter examples are derived from the experience of the authors in research project developed in collaboration with scientists of different fields (biology, medicine, etc.) and industry. We wanted this book to be useful both to readers more interested in the theoretical aspects, and also to those more concerned with the numerical implementation. To this aim, solutions to the exercises have been subdivided in three parts. The first concerns the mathematical analysis of the problem, the second its numerical approximation and the third part is devoted to implementation aspects and the analysis of the results. The book consists of three parts. The first deals with basic material and results provided as useful reference for the other sections. In particular, we recall the basics of functional analysis and the finite element method. The second part deals with steady elliptic problems, solved with finite elements or finite differences, while in the third part we address time-dependent problems, including linear hyperbolic systems and Navier-Stokes equations. Two appendices discuss some practical implementation issues and three-dimensional applications. Each section contains a brief introduction to the subject to make this book self contained.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Progress in the numerical simulation of turbulence has been rapid in the 1990s. New techniques both for the numerical approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations and for the subgrid-scale models used in large-eddy simulation have emerged and are being widely applied for both fundamental and applied engineering studies, along with novel ideas for the performance and use of simulation for compressible, chemically reacting and transitional flows. This collection of papers from the second ERCOFTAC Workshop on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation, held in Grenoble in September 1996, presents the key research being undertaken in Europe and Japan on these topics. Describing in detail the ambitious use of DNS for fundamental studies and of LES for complex flows of potential and actual engineering importance, this volume will be of interest to all researchers active in the area.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The important lapse in the failure of Debye-Huckel theory was established during the last century by detailed theoretical and experimental work of Glueckauff, Pitzer, Buchner, Barthel and the Nobel Prize winners Eigen and Tamm. The omission of incorporation of dielectric permittivity variation with concentration is attributed to be sole cause for several interesting mechanisms observed in electrolytic solutions. This book developed a model to fill the void. A nonlinear equation for Dielectric constant as a function of three different powers of concentration was proposed. Gauss-Newton method was used in curve fitting the Dielectric data. The Poisson-Boltzmann equation provided access to apply the proposed correction to the Debye-Huckel theory. The governing equations for an EOF of an aqueous electrolyte solution were developed by fully coupled Navier ¿ Stokes, Maxwell ¿ Stefan, Poisson - Boltzmann equations. The Finite difference method and Finite element method were used to solve the governing equations.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 196 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - With rapid progress made in employing computational techniques for various complex Navier-Stokes fluid flow problems, design optimization problems traditionally based on empirical formulations and experiments are now being addressed with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To be able to carry out an effective CFD-based optimization study, it is essential that the uncertainty and appropriate confidence limits of the CFD solutions be quantified over the chosen design space. The present dissertation investigates the issues related to code verification, surrogate model-based optimization and sensitivity evaluation. For Navier-Stokes (NS) CFD code verification a least square extrapolation (LSE) method is assessed. This method projects numerically computed NS solutions from multiple, coarser base grids onto a freer grid and improves solution accuracy by minimizing the residual of the discretized NS equations over the projected grid. In this dissertation, the finite volume (FV) formulation is focused on. The interplay between the xi concepts and the outcome of LSE, and the effects of solution gradients and singularities, nonlinear physics, and coupling of flow variables on the effectiveness of LSE are investigated. A CFD-based design optimization of a single element liquid rocket injector is conducted with surrogate models developed using response surface methodology (RSM) based on CFD solutions. The computational model consists of the NS equations, finite rate chemistry, and the k-6 turbulence closure. With the aid of these surrogate models, sensitivity and trade-off analyses are carried out for the injector design whose geometry (hydrogen flow angle, hydrogen and oxygen flow areas and oxygen post tip thickness) is optimized to attain desirable goals in performance (combustion length) and life/survivability (the maximum temperatures on the oxidizer post tip and injector face and a combustion chamber wall temperature).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The material covered by this book has been taught by one of the authors in a post-graduate course on Numerical Analysis at the University Pierre et Marie Curie of Paris. It is an extended version of a previous text (cf. Girault & Raviart [32J) published in 1979 by Springer-Verlag in its series: Lecture Notes in Mathematics. In the last decade, many engineers and mathematicians have concentrated their efforts on the finite element solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flows. The purpose of this book is to provide a fairly comprehen sive treatment of the most recent developments in that field. To stay within reasonable bounds, we have restricted ourselves to the case of stationary prob lems although the time-dependent problems are of fundamental importance. This topic is currently evolving rapidly and we feel that it deserves to be covered by another specialized monograph. We have tried, to the best of our ability, to present a fairly exhaustive treatment of the finite element methods for inner flows. On the other hand however, we have entirely left out the subject of exterior problems which involve radically different techniques, both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view. Also, we have neither discussed the implemen tation of the finite element methods presented by this book, nor given any explicit numerical result. This field is extensively covered by Peyret & Taylor [64J and Thomasset [82].Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 392 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This volume consists of six articles, each treating an important topic in the theory ofthe Navier-Stokes equations, at the research level. Some of the articles are mainly expository, putting together, in a unified setting, the results of recent research papers and conference lectures. Several other articles are devoted mainly to new results, but present them within a wider context and with a fuller exposition than is usual for journals. The plan to publish these articles as a book began with the lecture notes for the short courses of G.P. Galdi and R. Rannacher, given at the beginning of the International Workshop on Theoretical and Numerical Fluid Dynamics, held in Vancouver, Canada, July 27 to August 2, 1996. A renewed energy for this project came with the founding of the Journal of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics, by G.P. Galdi, J. Heywood, and R. Rannacher, in 1998. At that time it was decided that this volume should be published in association with the journal, and expanded to include articles by J. Heywood and W. Nagata, J. Heywood and M. Padula, and P. Gervasio, A. Quarteroni and F. Saleri. The original lecture notes were also revised and updated.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 304 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -In present-day technology the engineer is faced with complicated problems which can be solved only by advanced numerical methods using digital computers. He should have mathematical models at his disposal in order to simulate the behavior of physical systems. In many cases, including problems in physics, mechanics, chemistry, biology, civil engineering, electrodynamics, solid mechanics, space engineering, petroleum engineering, weather-forecasting, mass transport, multiphase flow and, last but not least, hydrodynamics, such a physical system can be described mathematically by one or more partial differential equations. Some of these problems require extreme accuracy, while for other problems only the qualitative behavior of the solution need to be studied. The finite element method (FEM) is one of the most commonly used methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). It makes use of the computer and is very general in the sense that it can be applied to both steady-state and transient, linear and nonlinear problems in geometries of arbitrary space dimension. The FEM is in fact a method which transforms a PDE into a system of linear (algebraic) equations. The following aspects may be identified in the study of a physical phenomenon: (i) engineering-mathematical sciences to formulate the problem correctly in terms of PDEs (ii) numerical methods to construct and to solve the system of algebraic equations; applied numerical functional analysis to give error estimates and convergence proofs (iii) informatics and programming to perform the calculations efficiently on the computer.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 500 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Many mechanics and physics problems have variational formulations making them appropriate for numerical treatment by finite element techniques and efficient iterative methods. This book describes the mathematical background and reviews the techniques for solving problems, including those that require large computations such as transonic flows for compressible fluids and the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible viscous fluids. Finite element approximations and non-linear relaxation, augmented Lagrangians, and nonlinear least square methods are all covered in detail, as are many applications.'Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Variational Problems', originally published in the Springer Series in Computational Physics, is a classic in applied mathematics and computational physics and engineering. This long-awaited softcover re-edition is still a valuable resource for practitioners in industry and physics and for advanced students.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume consists of six articles, each treating an important topic in the theory ofthe Navier-Stokes equations, at the research level. Saleri. The original lecture notes were also revised and updated.
