Stemma di Bologna con le chiavi di San Pietro incise al frontespizio, numerose incisioni calcografiche nel testo, grande marca tipografica in fine (Ercole con Idra), 6 tavole ripiegate e incise fuori testo. Rari antichi appunti a penna, segno di tarlo alla base per tutto il volume con perdita di due lettere del frontespizio e per il resto è lontano dal testo.

Zustand: molto buono. in-folio (305 x 200 mm), pp. (8), 587, affascinante rilegatura coeva in pelle di scrofa su assicelle, piatti interamente decorati a secco da triplice ordine di bordure con fiori e ritratti, un fermaglio conservato; nota di possesso al contropiatto datata 1546. Impresa tipografica al titolo ed in fine, numerose incisioni su legno, diagrammi ed iniziali ornate. Importante prima edizione di Basilea nella quale si vedono riuniti per la prima volta tutti i testi euclidei; comprende sia la traduzione del Campano, esemplata da una traduzione araba, sia quella dello Zamberti tradotta direttamente dal greco; inoltre l'introduzione di Melantone, che sovente fu censurata. Quest'edizione comprende le maggiori opere euclidee: gli Elementa, Phaenomena, Catoptrica, Data, e l'Opusculum De levi & ponderoso, che appare qui per la prima volta. Non ci è pervenuta alcuna notizia relativamente ad un trattato euclideo di meccanica, in greco. Secondo fonti arabe, Euclide avrebbe scritto un trattato relativo al peso. Al momento della pubblicazione fu consegnato ad Hervagius un frammento del ''De levi et Ponderoso'', come facente parte a tutti gli effetti delle opere euclidee. Nel 1900 Curtze, trovò a Dresda il manoscritto ''Liber Euclidis de gravi et levi et de comparatione corporum ad invecem'' e lo pubblicò. Si tratta della stessa opera espressa in modo differente: spiega con metodi geometrici la caduta dei corpi in movimento, e costituisce la più precisa esposizione della dinamica aristotelica e del moto dei corpi. Estese chiose di mano coeva, alcune in rosso, nei margini. Bell'esemplare su carta forte, nella sua preziosa legatura originale, con alcune chiose marginali, lasciate integre dal rilegatore. Nota di possesso calligrafata ''1546 Ominium rerum Vicissitudo - B.Praun'' ("All things are subject to change") sul contropiatto anteriore. La famiglia Praun è documentata a Norimberga sin dal 1383, dove fece parte del consiglio cittadino dal 1474 al 1806 e prosperò con il commercio degli articoli più svariati, aprì una sede dell'azienda a Bologna per il commercio di tessuti in seta. El libro de matemáticas más antiguo del mundo que todavía se usa y sus teoremas son los que generalmente se aprenden en la escuela moderna (PMM). Elementa Geometrica es una de las producciones científicas más conocidas del mundo, contiene una recopilación del conocimiento impartido en el ámbito académico de entonces. En ella se presenta de manera formal, partiendo únicamente de cinco postulados, el estudio de las propiedades de líneas y planos, círculos y esferas, triángulos y conos, etcétera, es decir, de las formas regulares. Probablemente ninguno de los postulados de Elementa Geometrica haya sido demostrado por primera vez por Euclides, pero la organización del material y su exposición, sin duda alguna se deben a él. De hecho, hay mucha evidencia de que Euclides usara libros de texto anteriores cuando escribía su obra, ya que presenta un gran número de definiciones que no son usadas, tales como la de un oblongo, un rombo y un romboide. La geometría de Euclides, además de ser un poderoso instrumento de razonamiento deductivo, ha sido extremadamente útil en muchos campos del conocimiento; por ejemplo, en la física, la astronomía, la química y diversas ingenierías. Occasional light spotting throughout. Ink title inscribed by early hand on foot fore-edge. In modern blind-ruled calf over boards, spine in compartments with red morocco label and gilt lettering. An excellent copy, fresh and crisp withal. This is the second volume only of this 1574 edition of Euclid's Elementa edited by Christoph Clavius (1537-1612), the Bamberg Jesuit and professor of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum, who supplemented it with his monumental commentary. This Roman publication represents one of the greatest achievements in the history of Renaissance mathematics. "His contemporaries called Clavius 'the Euclid of the 16th century'. "His edition of book V, VI, and VII of Apollonius' conic sections first appeared in Florence in 1661. In 1672 Borelli was forced to fly Messina with a price on his head as the result of political upheavals there; his redaction of Maurolico's edition of Archimedes, in press at that time, was confiscated by the hostile regime.
