Blue cloth, spine & upper board titled in silver-gilt. Slightly musty but good-plus in chipped dust-wrapper. "Dan Holland.has fished from the Arctic to Arizona, from the Sierras to the pasture streams of Connecticut. He has taken the eastern brook trout, the Dolly Varden, the brown, the rainbow, the cutthroat, the golden, the steelhead; not to mention sea trout, lake trout, Arctic char, and grayling. And now in his book he tells all that wonderful experience and priceless trout lore, spicing it with stories and illustrating it with his own photographs. Holland describes the different species: what they are like, where they are to be found, what they eat. He relates the life of a trout from the spawn bed to old age. There is a chapter on trout food, and the hatching of aquatic insects. One of the best of all is the chapter on trout habits." .

Sticker ghost to cover. Slightly used but solidly intact second-hand paperback. "The native trout of the continental United States exist today largely as isolated, remnant populations in tiny rivulets beyond the reach of hatchery trucks. Except for Alaska, current fish populations in most primary trout streams are a mixture of exotics and exotic/native hybrids that out-compete and ultimately replace the original, genetically pure endemic strains. To meet the insatiable public demand for more fish in the creel, state fish and game departments feel pressured to continue the policy of stocking trout waters with hatchery-produced trout of questionable lineage, many of 'catchable' size. In .California, for example, in 1979 the Department of Fish and Game planted a total of 12,302,838 catchable trout. .These essays constitute [the author's] revolt." The author tours some of the remaining strongholds of native strains of trout and reports back on his adventures. Chapters include: Geology and the trout; Beginnings; Evolution of an angler; Coastal Cutthroats; Westslope and Mountain Cutthroats; Yellowstone and Fine-Spotted Snake River Cutthroats; Native trout of the Lahontan Basin; Trout of the Boneeville Basin; Native trout of the Alvord Basin; Native Trout of the Central and Southern Rocky Mountains; Rio Grande Cutthroats - 1 and 2; Redband Trout; Golden Trout of the High Sierras; Native trout of the Lower Colorado system; Rainbow Trout - 1, 2, and 3; Trout of the Sierra Madre Occidental; Atlantic Salmon; Lake Trout; Arctic Charr; Dolly Varden Charr and the Bull Trout; Eastern Brook Trout; Mending the cast. .

Zustand: Sehr gut. XXIV, 294 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - People who read magazines backward will agree with John Berendt and David Halberstam. Buckley's frequent New Yorker contributions to the back-page "Shouts and Murmurs" column have been a regular source of hilarity: The Pope's appearance on Oprah to promote his book; letters of recommendation for O. f. Simpson's New York condo application; a review of Peter Benchley's new book, Gills, about a vengeful Dolly Varden trout; the starship Enterprise's most daring and difficult assignment- programming its VCR; and several dozen other delightful New Yorker parodies, satires, and pastiches are all collected here. Buckley also writes for other magazines. Over the years he has written memorable pieces for such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue, Architectural Digest, The New Republic, Condé Nast Traveler, Esquire, and many others. These pieces are also included-at no extra charge. He has occasionally been the source of controversy, as when he perpetrated a highly efficient and successful hoax claiming that the Kremlin was about to auction off the embalmed remains of Lenin in order to raise hard currency. A review he wrote of one of Tom Clancy's novels so infuriated the novelist that he launched fax cruise missiles at Buckley-providing Buckley with ammunition for his counter-strike. When not annoying the Russian Interior Ministry or megaselling thriller writers, Buckley embarks on unusual adventures of his own: steaming up the Amazon in the company of billionaires and deposed European royalty, spelunking in Mayan caves, landing on the deck of the U.S.S. Nimitz, and hurtling about the wild blue yonder with the Thunderbirds (see "How I Went Nine Gs in an F-16 and Only Threw Up Five Times"). These, too, are included- but you must act now. Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - On Christmas Eve, around 1812, Pip, an orphan who is about seven years old, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard, while visiting the graves of his parents and siblings. Pip now lives with his abusive elder sister and her kind husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. The convict scares Pip into stealing food and a file. Early on Christmas morning Pip returns with the file, a pie and brandy. During Christmas Dinner that evening, at the moment Pip's theft is about to be discovered, soldiers arrive and ask Joe to repair some shackles. Joe and Pip accompany them as they recapture the convict who is fighting with another escaped convict. The first convict confesses to stealing food from the smithy.A year or two later, Miss Havisham, a wealthy spinster who still wears her old wedding dress and lives as a recluse in the dilapidated Satis House, asks Mr Pumblechook, a relation of the Gargery's, to find a boy to visit her. Pip visits Miss Havisham and falls in love with her adopted daughter Estella. Estella remains aloof and hostile to Pip, which Miss Havisham encourages. Pip visits Miss Havisham regularly, until he is old enough to learn a trade.Joe accompanies Pip for the last visit, when she gives the money for Pip to be bound as apprentice blacksmith. Joe's surly assistant, Dolge Orlick, is envious of Pip and dislikes Mrs Joe. When Pip and Joe are away from the house, Mrs Joe is brutally attacked, leaving her unable to speak or do her work. Orlick is suspected of the attack. Mrs Joe becomes kind-hearted after the attack. Pip's former schoolmate Biddy joins the household to help with her care. The novel was originally published in monthly instalments in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany, from February 1837 to April 1839. It was originally intended to form part of Dickens's serial, The Mudfog Papers. George Cruikshank provided one steel etching per month to illustrate each instalment. The novel first appeared in book form six months before the initial serialisation was completed, in three volumes published by Richard Bentley, the owner of Bentley's Miscellany, under the author's pseudonym, 'Boz'. It included 24 steel-engraved plates by Cruikshank.Gathered around the fire at the Maypole Inn, in the village of Chigwell, on an evening of foul weather in the year 1775, are John Willet, proprietor of the Maypole, and his three cronies. One of the three, Solomon Daisy, tells an ill-kempt stranger at the inn a well-known local tale of the murder of Reuben Haredale which had occurred 22 years earlier on that very day. Reuben had been the owner of the Warren, a local estate which is now the residence of Geoffrey, the deceased Reuben's brother, and Geoffrey's niece, Reuben's daughter Emma Haredale. After the murder, Reuben's gardener and steward went missing and were suspects in the crime. A body was later found and identified as that of the steward, so the gardener was assumed to be the murderer.Joe Willet, son of the Maypole proprietor, quarrels with his father because John treats 20-year-old Joe as a child. Finally having had enough of this ill-treatment, Joe leaves the Maypole and goes for a soldier, stopping to say goodbye to the woman he loves, Dolly Varden, daughter of London locksmith Gabriel Varden.Meanwhile, Edward Chester is in love with Emma Haredale. Both Edward's father, John Chester, and Emma's uncle, the Catholic Geoffrey Haredale - these two are sworn enemies - oppose the union after Sir John untruthfully convinces Geoffrey that Edward's intentions are dishonourable. Sir John intends to marry Edward to a woman with a rich inheritance, to support John's expensive lifestyle and to pay off his debtors. Edward quarrels with his father and leaves home for the West Indies.

Buch.

First Edition. Small broadside (16x8.5cm.) printed within typographically decorative border on yellow stock. Miniscule loss at top left-hand margin, else Near Fine. Printed at head of title "8 & 7." Reconstruction-era three verse ballad broadside addressed to Dolly Varden (not /the/ Dolly Varden of Charles Dickens' novel "Barnaby Rudge," though the name was hugely popular as a result of the work, and inspired a fashion craze and the name of a trout). The text makes mention of the 1872 Crédit Mobilier fraud; promotes the work of the Patrons of Husbandry ("Dolly, do you love the 'Granges,' / Do you love to be well fed, / Will you shield them from all danger, / While they reap the daily bread?"); and attacks the spread of carpet-bagging in the South ("Search the carpet-bagger well, / And the pack of high-tone stealers, / Judge, and send them all to L.".

Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Folio. Two nested bifoliums making eight pages. Music shop stamp above the music on page three, internal tape repair along the fold of the outer bifolium, offsetting and foxing throughout, soiling and rubbing to the exterior, and light edgewear, still a very good and complete copy. An instrumental piece for piano (with pedal marks). Plate imprint, " Dolly V.S. 13171 - 4." The cover illustration shows women in a type of dress that was popular at the time and known as "Dolly Varden," named after the Charles Dickens character from *Barnaby Rudge*; a quadrille was a popular dance in Europe and its colonies at the time and (for ease of understanding) can be thought of as an early form of square dancing; and a "schottisch" tune can be thought of as a slow polka. Put it all together and you get what must be one heck of a time! *OCLC* locates two holdings of the march and three holdings of the waltz, but no holdings of the schottish.
