Watercolour illustrations of the objects sent by John Work Garrett's trusted agent, Captain Masayuki Kataoka, for approval before purchase, all contribute to give a fascinating background. The sales led to a greatly increased international interest in this Japanese miniature art form. Neil K. Davey, who has been responsible for the documenting and cataloguing of Sotheby's Japanese sales for over twelve years, has founded his book on the information he acquired while working on the items in the M.T. Hindson collection. He has supplemented this information with a considerable amount of further material based on other collections, so that the coverage of Netsuke is more complete than that of any other book previously published on the subject. Over a period of several years, in addition to forming a collection of fine netsuke, Mr. Lazarnick has been amassing much detailed information on their carvers, searching out fine examples of their work throughout the world and recording the signatures in a systematic fashion. He has been aided in this work by his own natural gift for photography which, together with a large amount of painstaking research and help from other collectors and Oriental art dealers, has gone towards the production of this book. As George Lazarnick mentions in his introduction, one of the most difficult and brain-taxing aspects of reading and interpreting signatures is that the carved or engraved calligraphy used by the artists does not always follow the strict kanji or printed form of the characters represented.
