Car c'est le paradoxe principal qui le fait à la fois fragile et si puissant ; fragile parce que consommé, surconsommé de toutes parts il risque de disparaître dans la banalisation de l'industrie des programmes ; puissant puisque pour le moment il en est le joyau, l'étoile principale: la seule vraie star de l'audiovisuel. Le mot cinéma est porteur lui-même de son ambiguïté ; à la fois le lieu, la salle de cinéma, il désigne aussi le produit, le film, l'uvre : on peut ainsi dire ajuste titre que le cinéma est en crise baisse de fréquentation des salles en même temps qu'en plein développement comme spectacle favori des chaînes de télévision (ceci explique cela). Les enjeux qui l'entraînent le dépassent financièrement et le menacent économiquement alors qu'il est devenu la distraction préférée des jeunes du monde entier. Fait au départ pour amuser, le voici maintenant partie prenante de toute vie culturelle, et ses bouleversements sont les signes avant-coureurs de tout grand changement de mentalité (Godard et Mai 68, Tarkovski et la Perestroïka), à tel point même que le concept moteur d'industrie culturelle s'applique d'abord à lui, avant même la littérature, la musique, la peinture, arts nobles s'il en est. En moins de cent ans, il s'est inventé la plus belle saga du siècle et a fait de sa propre histoire son plus beau scénario: de Feuillade à Orson Welles, de Griffith à Woody Allen, il a donné au monde le miroir de son siècle, brisé dans la violence des cahots qui l'environnent, comme dans l'admirable scène finale de La Dame de Shangaï. Mais il ne s'est pas contenté de refléter ce qui l'intéresse: il est devenu le monde lui-même en le précédant loin devant lui. Messager prophète, il donne le meilleur et le pire : éducateur génial, il a en lui la capacité de faire voir la vérité par-delà l'ambiguïté des mots : Statyajit Ray nous a fait «voir» l'Inde, comme Kurosawa le Japon, comme tout le cinéma américain l'Amérique si profondément confondue à lui qu'on peut se demander lequel a inventé l'autre. Le pire aussi puisque montrant le crime, il est parfois devenu le crime lui-même mettant en images réelles ce que le marquis de Sade avait à peine osé rêver. Le cinéma a ses héros, ses victimes, ses enfants, ses pères, ses fondateurs. Le destin m'a mis un jour dans la voiture qui emmenait Rossellini à l'enterrement de Langlois. Rossellini tenait à la main un télégramme qu'il me tendit en silence: c'était Jean Renoir qui écrivait d'Hollywood à Mary Meerson: «Désormais, nous sommes seuls dans la forêt.» Aujourd'hui qu'il nous faut vivre sans ces trois-là Langlois, Renoir, Rossellini il nous reste tant à faire, mais heureusement, ils nous ont beaucoup appris, nous laissant dans la forêt multimédiatique des petits cailloux blancs qui marquent les chemins de l'avenir. One of my earliest assignments involved the development of a piece of labo- tory automation equipment for a major European pharmaceutical manufacturer.Two things stick in my mind from those early days - first, that the equipment was always to be ready for delivery in three weeks and,second,that being able to write well structured Pascal was not sufficient to deliver reliable software performance. Delivery was ultimately six months late,the project ran some sixty percent over budget and I gained my first promotion to Senior Engineer. At the time it puzzled me that I had been unable to predict the John Clarkson real effort required to complete the automation project - I had Reader in Engineering Design, genuinely believed that the project would be finished in three Director, Cambridge Engineering weeks.It was some years later that I discovered Kenneth Cooper's Design Centre papers describing the Rework Cycle and realised that I had been the victim of 'undiscovered rework'.I quickly learned that project plans were not just inaccurate,as most project managers would attest,but often grossly misleading,bearing little resemblance to actual development practice.
