He was also the first Russian Grand Duke of Finland and Lithuania. Alexander argued that the outcome of the war was not to be only the liberation of France, but the universal triumph of "the sacred rights of humanity". To attain this it would be necessary "after having attached the nations to their government by making these incapable of acting save in the greatest interests of their subjects, to fix the relations of the states amongst each other on more precise rules, and such as it is to their interest to respect". A general treaty was to become the basis of the relations of the states forming "the European Confederation"; and this, though "it was no question of realising the dream of universal peace, would attain some of its results if, at the conclusion of the general war, it were possible to establish on clear principles the prescriptions of the rights of nations". Politisch waren die beiden mecklenburgischen Herzogtümer Schwerin und Strelitz mit ihrer Einbindung in die Kontinentalsperre, ihren Beitritten zum Rheinbund und ihren Bündnispflichten für den französischen Feldzug gegen Russland faktisch Vasallen Frankreichs. Das Mecklenburger Militär erfuhr eine Umstrukturierung, und das Militärrecht wurde nach französischem Vorbild grundlegend verändert. Die Sorgen und Nöte der Bevölkerung, die Fritz Reuter in seiner Erzählung »Ut de Franzosentid« humoristisch gefärbt, aber eindrücklich schildert, verschlechterten die Stimmung gegenüber den Franzosen zunehmend. Christian Daniel ERHARD (1759-1813) studierte ab 1778 die Universität Leipzig und promovierte 1782 zum Doktor der Rechte. Anschließend wurde er zum Oberhofgerichts-Advokaten ernannte und nahm 1783 eine Stelle als Beisitzer im Niederlausitzer Landgericht an. Im Jahre 1787 wurder er zum Extraordinarius und schließlich 1793 zum Ordinarius für Rechte an der Universität Leipzig ernannt. Seine juristischen Publikationen bezogen sich vor allem auf das sächsische und preußische Recht, herausragend etwa das von Carmer angeregter "Versuch einer Kritik des allgemeinen Gesetzbuchs für die preußischen Staaten" (1792). Seine Übersetzung zum "bürgerlichen Gesetzbuch Napoleons I., so Erhard im Vorwort, erscheint später als angekündigt, weil er den bislang fünf erschienenen Übersetzungen nicht einfach eine sechste anreihen wollte. Dies wäre jedoch schon deshalb nicht geschehen, weil er eine Reihe von Übersetzungsfehlern bei seinen Vorgängern entdeckt habe. Bei schwierigen Stellen habe er deshalb Anmerkungen hinzugefügt. Daneben fügte Erhard Parallelstellen aus dem Handelsgesetzbuch und der Gerichtsordnung hinzu. En droit de l'Ancien Régime, la substitution héréditaire désignait une disposition par laquelle on indiquait plusieurs héritiers successivement. He explains that the Code Napoleon in Mauritius was amended and passed last year and this has proved to be most unpopular. He encloses a copy of the debate and the amending Ordinance which he does not rate highly. Pages 48-50 include J. E. Chancellor's contribution to the debate. First leaf folded. Erstausgabe. - Der Jurist Christoph Christian Frhr. von Dabelow (1767-1830) studierte in Rostock und Jena Rechtswissenschaft und ließ sich nach dem Examen 1787 als Anwalt nieder. 1789 wurde er an der Univ. Bützow -- damals Teil der Univ. Rostock -- promoviert, nach der Habilitation lehrte er seit 1792 als o.Prof. der Rechte an der Univ. Halle. Während der vorübergehenden Schließung der Hochschule durch Napoleon unternahm er Reisen durch Österreich, Italien und Frankreich, nach Wiederaufnahme des Lehrbetriebs kehrte er kurz nach Halle zurück, nahm 1809 seinen Abschied und wurde 1811 Staatsrat und Staatsminister beim Herzog von Anhalt-Köthen. Nach dessen Tod lebte Dabelow ohne feste Anstellung in Heidelberg, Göttingen und wieder in Halle, ehe er 1819 als o. Prof. nach Dorpat berufen wurde. In seinen zahlreichen Schriften bearbeitete er fast alle Gebiete der Rechtswissenschaft, Schwerpunkte waren das römische und französische Recht (Ausführlicher theoretisch-praktischer Commentar über den Code Napoléon, 2 Teile, 1810). - Umschlag gering berieben. Erste Ausgabe. - Spangenberg (1784-1833) war Sohn des Professors Georg August Spangenberg, studierte in Göttingen bei Georg Jacob Friedrich Meister bis 1806, war dann bis 1808 Privatdozent an der Universität. Er entschied sich letztlich gegen eine Universitätslaufbahn und wählte den Staatsdienst bei Gericht. In verschiedenen Funktionen war er so in Göttingen, Verden, Hamburg und Celle aktiv, als Hof- und Kanzleirat und dann als Oberappellationsgerichtsrat, zuletzt als Beisitzer des königlichen Geheimratskollegiums in Hannover. Bekannt wurde er für seine Werke zum französischen Recht, insbesondere durch seinen 3-bändigen Kommentar zum Code Napoléon. Nach der Franzosenzeit standen freilich das deutsche und römische Recht im Fokus, wie auch die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt. - Mit gedruckter Widmung "Seinem hochverdienten Chef, dem Herrn Canzleydirector, Dr. Theodor Hagemann. von dem Verfasser".
