Ma è pessimismo del poi, di chi guarda con amarezza a quanto è scomparso, travolto dalla bufera bellica. A rileggerli oggi, infatti, quel che colpisce in questi reportage parigini è semmai l'insolente ironia, lo humour acuminato con cui Savinio osserva Parigi - «dama dal passato brillantissimo» che, incapace di rassegnarsi, continua a credere che al di là della sua cinta daziaria gli uomini, «vestiti di rozze pelli», combattono ancora le fiere «con zagaglie di silice» - e i suoi vecchi e nuovi dèi. Fatta eccezione per Apollinaire, «il poeta più profondamente classico che onori di sé il primo quarto del nostro secolo», e per Georges Simenon, un «Dostojewski minore», l'indomabile impertinenza di Savinio non risparmia nulla e nessuno: Max Jacob e Colette, Jean Cocteau e René Clair, l'Opéra e i Salons d'Automne. E tantomeno i surrealisti, il cui carattere dominante è «la puerilità, la quale, di là dalle frontiere dell'infanzia, si chiama scemenza» - non già l'intelligenza satanica. Ma colpiscono soprattutto, e incantano, il talento digressivo, l'erudizione nonchalante, e una scrittura insieme classica e aspramente inventiva, che disegna uomini e paesaggi con visionaria precisione: come nella splendida descrizione della baia del Mont-Saint-Michel, dove il mare «invade le praterie di tozze erbe salate, onde i montoni dagli occhi perlacei e feroci fuggono spaventati, con uno stretto galoppo arcuato».
