In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Persevere is a lonely little biplane. He used to carry passengers, but now they all travel on the bigger planes. Most of the jets look down on little Persevere, but his friend Claude, a big airliner, tries to cheer him up. It's Claude, too, who remembers Persevere when there's a problem that the large aircraft can't deal with. A rescue flight must be flown to a remote mountain airstrip - but the huge jets are too big and clumsy. For Persey, though, the mission is just right. His old pilot, Joe, comes out of retirement to fly him, and after a good check-up by the mechanic they set off. The mountain valleys become tighter and tighter, and the weather worsens, and the flight becomes more and more nerve-wracking; but at last Persey manages to manoeuvre down to the little landing strip. They collect their passenger, and set off on the tricky flight back. Persey and Joe return home heroes. The other aircraft crowd around to cheer and the story of the brave little biplaneis courage and determination is taken up by the media. Best of all, a new future is assured for Persey, for he is taken on by the wealthy owner of Claude's airline. He has proved himself, he is wanted: Persevere is happy at last. A tale of sadness turned to joy, of the underdogis perseverance winning through, this book will capture the imagination, stimulate the emotions, and fuel the will to win through of children everywhere. The text is colourfully illustrated and technically correct, and with the ever-increasing popularity of air shows and museums, visited by more and more youngsters, a lasting market is ensured for this attractive little volume. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. The first flights from Cornish soil were made at Penzance on 23 July 1910 by pioneer airman Claude Grahame-White, who brought his Farman down to Penwith by train. In the years since then the skies above Cornwall have been home to many aircraft, both military and civil. During the First World War airship and flying-boat stations were established in Cornwall to combat Imperial Germany's U-boats. This military activity gave way to displays of aerobatics and joy-riding in the inter-war years, although such entertainment lost its appeal as the public grew accustomed to seeing aeroplanes in flight. During the 1930s the first airlines serving Cornwall appeared. The outbreak of the Second World War brought military aircraft back to Cornwall, as many new airfields were established. Raiders flew from Cornwall to attack the French coast, night-fighters had stations in the county, and ferry flights were made as far as North Africa. After the war, activity slowed, although some airfields did remain open. The military still use Cornwall, mostly for training. In the years since 1960 there has been great growth in aviation in Cornwall, and several original aircraft types have been built in the county. In Cornish Skies charts the history of the Cornwall airfields and contains over 200 photographs with detailed captions. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in aviation history, as well as to those familiar with the county and its people. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"Buried in the archive for almost ninety years, Claude McKay's 'Romance in Marseille' traces the adventures of a rowdy troupe of dockworkers, prostitutes, and political organizers - collectively straight and queer, disabled and able-bodied, African, European, Caribbean, and American. Set largely in the culture-blending Vieux Port of Marseille at the height of the Jazz Age, the novel takes flight along with Lafala, an acutely disabled but abruptly wealthy West African sailor."-- Provided by publisher.

The First UK edition, which includes an original linocut, 'Crossing the Road' by Claude Flight printed from the artist's original lino blocks in red, cobalt blue and black. Flight was educated at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, which had been founded by the Scottish wood engraver Iain Macnab in 1925. It was there that the art of original linocut was first pioneered in the UK and Flight, surrounded by a team of talented young artists and teachers including Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews, soon began teaching there himself. Known for championing MacNab's principles of rhythms, counter-rhythms, sweeping lines and carefully organised sequences of differing colours, Flight is remembered today for developing the art of lino cutting to its full potential. His students later included the artists Margaret Barnard, Leonard Beaumont, Dorrit Black and Diana Drew. Published relatively early on into his career, the present work includes plates by Diana Drew, who at age just 13 and 15 shows "good direct cutting of well-arranged imaginative design" and "a more mature conception based on visual facts". The in-text illustrations further show various tools needed for lino cutting, including oil stones, gouges, burnishers and rollers. Increasingly scarce as the first issue. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. ix, [3], 305, [3] pages. Author's Note. Illustrations. Footnotes. Notes. Glossary of Aviation Terms. Selected Bibliography and Sources. Index. Gavin Mortimer, 38, is an award-winning author, whose narrative non-fiction books have received rapturous reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. His first book, Ernest Shackleton, was published in 1999 and six more have followed, including The Great Swim, which was adjudged the 2009 Book of the Year by the Women's Sport Foundation of America. In addition, the Sunday Times named the Great Swim one of its best reads of 2008. His latest book, Chasing Icarus, was published in the US by Walker Bloomsbury in May, and has already received excellent reviews with the Dallas Morning News describing it as 'a wonderful, absorbing story'. Away from his non-fiction titles, Gavin has written a dozen books for children and contributed articles to publications such as BBC History Magazine, Esquire and the Observer. By 1910, America and the world were transfixed by the danger and challenge of mastering the air. Yet which form of flight would predominate was far from clear--dirigibles, balloons, and airplanes all had their passionate advocates. During the seventeen days in October 1910 that Gavin Mortimer vividly recounts, the question of primacy in the air was on full display, after which the future of aviation was never in doubt. The great dirigible "America," captained by Walter Wellman, lifted off from New Jersey and for several turbulent days attempted to be the first flying machine to cross the Atlantic. From St. Louis, ballooning teams from around the world took off in pursuit of the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Cup, featuring Americans Alan Hawley and Augustus Post. And at the famed racetrack at Belmont Park, New York, huge crowds gathered to watch airplane pilots race above the oval and attempt to set speed, altitude, and distance records.
