Zustand: Gut. XVI, 270 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - the books constituting the Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible, have a complex history of authorship, resulting ina variety of styles, perspectives, and meanings. The authors and editors of the books that became the Bible lived through the political vicissitudes of a region that was a cultural crossroads, subject to successive waves of invasion, settlement, and influence by a variety of civilizations. Consequently, their works reflect the diverse political, intellectual, and literary legacies of the ancient Near East and, in some cases, the incorporation of non-Hebrew texts. -- S. A. Nigosian, a scholar of Biblical and Near Eastern religions, explores the diverse literary antecedents of the Old Testament as well as the Apocrypha - books excluded from the canonical Hebrew text but included in the Sepruagint. Analyzing the formation and contents of these works, Nigosian compares them with the religious, philosophical, didactic, and historical works created by the neighboring Near Eastern civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine, and Asia Minor. Proceeding book by book, he highlights parallels in language, structure, and story among Hebrew and non-Hebrew and non-canonical Hebrew texts. -- From the ubiquity of flood myths throughout the ancient Near East to similarities between seduction tales in Genesis and Egyptian mythology, Job-like stories from Babylonian legend, and the recycling of elements within the Hebrew Bible, this book offers a concise and accessible history of the composition and compilation of the Bible and the complex process of canonization. It also features a glossary, an extensive bibliography, and a chronology of the composition of the Hebrew Bible and the Apocrypha. Maps, colour and black and white photographic illustrations, 143pp, chronology, glossary of Buddhist terms, notes, bibliography, index, very good hardback copy in dustjacket. Due to its unique position as a crossroads between East and West, the Silk Road was never simply a trade route, but rather a conduit at which varied cultures and religions converged and great civilisations flourished. Many of the world's major faiths thrived there, but Buddhism became the unifying influence. For centuries Buddhist monks and devotees hewed scores of cave temples out of the cliffs situated just outside Dunhuang, an oasis town at the fork of the northern and southern trade routes of the Silk Road. In 1900, a secret cave was discovered by a Daoist priest among the many caves dotting the cliff face at Dunhuang. Its entrance had been sealed and disguised but, when opened, it yielded an extraordinary hoard of ancient Buddhist manuscripts, documents and paintings, preserved in the desert climate since the early eleventh century. In early 1907 Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1942), a Hungarian-born explorer employed by the British in India, was the first foreigner to gain access to the secret cave archive. His expeditions, first published in the 1920s and here retold, helped to reveal the long-forgotten history of the Silk Road.

  • Zustand: Gut. 319 Seiten / p., Abb. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar / Cover slightly rubbed, otherwise good copy. - From the beginning of civilization, the Levant, the coastal region of the eastern Mediterranean from Syria in the north to Egypt in the south, was the crossroads of various peoples and cultures. From this important trade region, fundamental social and economic changes began spreading across the Middle East and the Mediterranean, leaving behind a rich heritage of unique material remains. However, not only archaeologists and historians have been fascinated by this blend of Eastern and Western traditions. Combining the ancient oriental culture of Mesopotania and Egypt with European classical antiquity, the Levant has for centuries inspired artists and poets, continuously luring travelers to re discover the power of this region. -- 4000 years of history and archaeology in the Levant - from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages - are presented in this volume. Uncovering buried history, a team of French archaeologists follows the significant cultural developments and their impact on the gate between the Orient and the Occident: relics of the first cities in the Bronze Age, traces of the Phoenician conquests in the Mediterranean, characteristics of the fusion of cultures in the Greco-Roman era, monuments to the kingdoms of the Nabataens and their mythical capitol Petra, evidence of the golden age of oriental Christianity, and finally the manifestation of Islamic conquest as a battle for power during the crusades. -- In his pictures, the photographer Robert Polidori shows much more than just the special highlights of each epoch, but rather the cultural-historical meaning of the Levant as a region in which the face of civilization was dramatically shaped. -- Containing a synoptic chronology presenting the developments of the Levant in the context of the high cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Iran, a glossary of historical and archaeological terminology, a bibliography covering international publications on the topic, and a comprehensive index, The Levant is a culturally and historically engaging work - for both the amateur enthusiast and the expert archaeologist as well as tor the traveler. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - â ¿These guitars have been really good tools; theyâ ¿re not just museum pieces. They all have a soul and they all come alive.â ¿ â ¿ Eric Claptonâ ¿In his own words, Clapton tells his story through the history of his instruments.â ¿Ââ ¿ÂRolling StoneInÂSix-String StoriesÂEric Clapton reflects on a legendary career as told through the tools of his trade: his guitars. Collected together here for the first time are the instruments Clapton sold in three record-breaking auctions between 1999 and 2011 to benefit the Crossroads treatment centre he founded in 1998. Featuring some of the most famous guitars ever played, Clapton guides the reader through nearly 300 instruments as he discusses their provenance, reveals insights about his own playing, and shares anecdotes from each chapter of his spectacular life in music. â ¿One by one these guitars were the chapters of my life. They belong to a very well-loved family.â ¿Ââ ¿ÂEric ClaptonSix-String StoriesÂpresents a â ¿family treeâ ¿ that makes connections between iconic instruments, such as Claptonâ ¿s famous â ¿Blackieâ ¿ Stratocaster, and previously unknown rarities, placing them in the chronology of his career. Clapton recalls the instruments he bought to emulate his heroes, the guitars with unknown origins that became their own legend, the ones that never left his side, and the legacy they left behind. Every piece has been individually photographed, revealing every curve, detail and scratch, while the work of over 80 of the worldâ ¿s best rock photographers shows the instruments in play. See Claptonâ ¿s evolution from the psychedelic Sixties, through the stripped-back Seventies, electric Eighties, and unplugged Nineties, right up to the sale of the last guitar. â ¿As an avid rock or blues fan, I would look at all the pictures in this book.â ¿Ââ ¿ÂEric ClaptonHistorical and technical information for each piece in the collection â ¿ including playlists and concert dates for those instruments used on records and at public appearances â ¿ completes the story behind each guitar. â ¿The guitars are things of great beauty.â ¿Ââ ¿ÂEric ClaptonÂ.
