Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Shortlisted for the 2012 Orwell Prize 'As soon as we abandon our own reason', wrote Bertrand Russell, 'and are content to rely upon authority, there is no end to our troubles.' For over forty years, Christopher Hitchens has proclaimed truth where others have spun falsehood and written, with passionate commitment, on matters that others fear to broach. This volume of essays encompasses Hitchens' writing over the past decade on politics, literature and religion. In Arguably Hitchens explores a wide range of cultural and political issues, past and present. His fresh perceptions of figures as diverse as Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, Rebecca West and Philip Larkin are matched in brilliance by his acerbic discussions and intrepid observations, gathered over a lifetime of travelling and reporting from destinations such as Iran, China and Pakistan. Hitchens' life has above all else been one of defiance and wit, courage and humility: in an age of digital punditry and twenty-four hour hucksterism, he has been a voice of reason amid the clamour, making an indelible mark on politics and literature on both sides of the Atlantic. Arguably is the indispensible companion to the Anglosphere's pre-eminent political writer. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Kartoniert. Zustand: Gut. 16. Auflage. 156 (4) Seiten. 18 cm. Guter Zustand. Vorsatz herausgetrennt. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Deutschen Jugendbuchpreis 1976, Kategorie Jugendbuch. England, 21. No Blade of Grass, 1970, verfilmt.

Paperback. Zustand: Fine. In the shade of the Giant's Throne Mountain, and on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Port St. Christopher is home to Apley Towers; a riding school for girls and boys, young or old, who learn what it means to be a true horse rider. Angela has got herself a secret admirer all thanks to Kaela playing the stable cupid. But for both girls, this has disastrous consequences: Kaela has become too wrapped up in the excitement to see the stressful decisions her friend is facing. Will Kaela's meddling pay off in the end? It's time for Angela to stop trying to please others and start thinking about herself. As the series continues, love is in the air at Apley Towers, and the kodas each have to confront their feelings. Trixie thought she wanted Russell to leave her alone, so why is she so upset when he finally does? Meanwhile, after his recent romantic gesture to Kaela, Bart seems to have vanished off the face of the earth, and Angela is brought face to face with her idol thanks to a magazine interview. What do you do when reality fails to live up to expectation? With each other's support the kodas can work it out! In the third novel, Angela is forced to face up to her former bully, Gemma Larkin, when she finds out that she's set to compete against Sagittarius Stables in an upcoming competition. With the support of Apley Towers, Angela is desperate to beat Gemma once and for all. But how can Angela prove herself to anyone else, if she can't even convince herself? Luckily, the kodas are there to help her deal with a past she thought she'd left behind. Apley Towers is a six-book horse and pony series set in South Africa. These coming of age stories have a strong focus on close friendships and are ideal for readers aged 11+. Shortlisted for the People's Book Prize 2017.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Including his most memorable pieces -- his 'Postcard from Rome', his observations on Margaret Thatcher, his insights into Heaney, Larkin and Orwell -- this book also contains brilliantly funny examinations of characters like Barry Humphries, as well as showcasing James's more thoughtful, analytical side. From Germaine Greer to Marilyn Monroe, from the nature of celebrity to German culpability for the Holocaust, Reliable Essays is an unmissable collection from one of the best writers of our time. 'He has widened the "tonal range" of criticism, permitting it to be both sober and skittish, learned and lewd, rhetorically rambunctious and epigrammatically concise .an intellectual as well as a joker, a wise man as well as a wit' Peter Conrad, Observer 'His writing is impeccably witty, flexible and urbane .immensely enjoyable to read. It's a pleasure to see the metropolitan critic back in action' Christopher Taylor, Sunday Telegraph 'He can both get to the heart of a subject and raise a laugh' Nicholas Lezard, Sunday Times. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Of all the great novelists writing today, none shows the same gift as Martin Amis for writing non-fiction his essays, literary criticism and journalism are justly acclaimed. The Rub of Time comprises superb critical pieces on Amiss heroes Nabokov, Bellow and Larkin to brilliantly funny ruminations on sport, Las Vegas, John Travolta and the pornography industry. The collection includes his essay on Princess Diana and a tribute to his great friend Christopher Hitchens, but at the centre of the book, perhaps inevitably, are essays on politics, and in particular the American election campaigns of 2012 and 2016. One of the very few consolations of Donald Trumps rise to power is that Martin Amis is there to write about him. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'So charming' Marian Keyes From the highly-acclaimed author of SMALL PLEASURES - winner of the 2022 British Book Awards Page-Turner When aspiring novelist Christopher Flinders drops out of university to write his masterpiece (in between shifts as a fish delivery man and builder's mate), his family is sceptical. But when he is taken up by the London editor Owen Goddard and his charming wife Diana it seems success is just around the corner. Christopher's life has so far been rather short of charm - growing up in an unlovely suburb, with unambitious parents and a semi-vagrant brother - and he is captivated by his generous and cultured mentors. However, on the brink of realising his dream, Christopher makes a desperate misjudgement which results in disaster for all involved. Shattered, he withdraws from London and buries himself in rural Yorkshire, embracing a career and a private life marked by mediocrity. Twenty years on, a young academic researching into Owen Goddard seeks him out, and Christopher is forced to exhume his past, setting him on a path to a life-changing discovery. Praise for Clare Chambers: 'Thoroughly enjoyable and very clever' Sunday Express 'Effortless to read, but every sentence lingers in the mind' Lissa Evans on Small Pleasures 'Beautifully observed and achingly funny' Woman & Home 'Chambers' eye for undemonstrative details achieves a Larkin-esque lucidity' Guardian on Small Pleasures 'Reminds us of the rare pleasure that an intelligent tale with a happy ending brings' The Sunday Times. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Faber poetry list, originally founded in the 1920s, was shaped by the taste of T.S. Eliot, who was its guiding light for nearly forty years. Since the sixties, each passing decade has seen the list grow with the addition of poets who were arguably the finest of their generation. In recent years the creation of the Poet-to-Poet series has further broadened the scope of Faber poetry to include the work of great poets from the past, selected and introduced by the contemporary poets they have inspired. The 2017 edition includes poems by: Simon Armitage; William Blake; Burns Robert; Lord Byron; Thomas Campion; John Clare; Samuel Taylor Coleridge; Wendy Cope; Emily Dickinson; John Donne; T.S. Eliot; Lavinia Greenlaw; David Harsent; Seamus Heaney; George Herbert; Robert Herrick; Gerard Manley Hopkins; A.E. Housman; Ted Hughes; Emma Jones; John Keats; Philip Larkin; Toby Martinez De Las Rivas; Marianne Moore; Andrew Motion; Paul Muldoon; Daljit Nagra; Wilfred Owen; Don Paterson; Tom Paulin; Sylvia Plath; Christopher Reid; William Shakespeare; Jo Shapcott; Percy Bysshe Shelley; Alfred Lord Tennyson; Edward Thomas; William Wordsworth; and, W.B. Zustand: Muy bueno. Of all the great novelists writing today, none shows the same gift as Martin Amis for writing non-fiction ? his essays, literary criticism and journalism are justly acclaimed. As Rachel Cusk wrote in the The Times, reviewing a previous collection, ?Amis is as talented a journalist as he is a novelist, but these essays all manifest an unusual extra quality, one that is not unlike friendship. He makes an effort; he makes readers feel that they are the only person there.? . The essays in The Rub of Time range from superb critical pieces on Amis?s heroes Nabokov, Bellow and Larkin to brilliantly funny ruminations on sport, Las Vegas, John Travolta and the pornography industry. The collection includes his essay on Princess Diana and a tribute to his great friend Christopher Hitchens, but at the centre of the book, perhaps inevitably, are essays on politics, and in particular the American election campaigns of 2012 and 2016. One of the very few consolations of Donald Trump?s rise to power is that Martin Amis is there to write about him. Zustand: Bueno. This extraordinary novel gives the reader the heart-to-heart testimony of one of our finest writers - a wonder of literary invention and a boisterous modern classic. *Shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction*. His most intimate and epic work to date, Inside Story is the unseen portrait of Martin Amis' extraordinary life, as a man and a writer. This novel had its birth in a death - that of the author's closest friend, Christopher Hitchens. We also encounter the vibrant characters who have helped define Martin Amis, from his father Kingsley, to his hero Saul Bellow, from Philip Larkin to Iris Murdoch and Elizabeth Jane Howard, and to the person who captivated his twenties, the alluringly amoral Phoebe Phelps. . What begins as a thrilling tale of romantic entanglements, family and friendship, evolves into a tender, witty exploration of the hardest questions: how to live, how to grieve, and how to die? In his search for answers, Amis surveys the great horrors of the twentieth century, and the still unfolding impact of the 9/11 attacks on the twenty-first - and what all this has taught him about how to be a writer. . The result is one of Amis' greatest achievements: a love letter to life that is at once exuberant, meditative, heartbreaking and ebullient, to be savoured and cherished for many years to come. 'The Mick Jagger of literature . Amis is the most dazzling prose stylist in post-war British fiction.' 752 pp. Deutsch.
