Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A deeply original exploration of the power of spontaneity-an ancient Chinese ideal that cognitive scientists are only now beginning to understand-and why it is so essential to our well-being Why is it always hard to fall asleep the night before an important meeting Or be charming and relaxed on a first date What is it about a politician who seems wooden or a comedian whose jokes fall flat or an athlete who chokes In all of these cases, striving seems to backfire. In Trying Not To Try, Edward Slingerland explains why we find spontaneity so elusive, and shows how early Chinese thought points the way to happier, more authentic lives. We've long been told that the way to achieve our goals is through careful reasoning and conscious effort. But recent research suggests that many aspects of a satisfying life, like happiness and spontaneity, are best pursued indirectly. The early Chinese philosophers knew this, and they wrote extensively about an effortless way of being in the world, which they called wu-wei (ooo-way). They believed it was the source of all success in life, and they developed various strategies for getting it and hanging on to it. With clarity and wit, Slingerland introduces us to these thinkers and the marvelous characters in their texts, from the butcher whose blade glides effortlessly through an ox to the wood carver who sees his sculpture simply emerge from a solid block. Slingerland uncovers a direct line from wu-wei to the Force in Star Wars, explains why wu-wei is more powerful than flow, and tells us what it all means for getting a date. He also shows how new research reveals what's happening in the brain when we're in a state of wu-wei-why it makes us happy and effective and trustworthy, and how it might have even made civilization possible. Through stories of mythical creatures and drunken cart riders, jazz musicians and Japanese motorcycle gangs, Slingerland effortlessly blends Eastern thought and cutting-edge science to show us how we can live more fulfilling lives. Trying Not To Try is mind-expanding and deeply pleasurable, the perfect antidote to our striving modern culture.

hardcover w/ dj. Zustand: Sehr gut. 108 Seiten Very good, clean copy! - A Celebration of the Art of the Chinese Craftsman - - Down through the centuries Chinese craftsmen have worked with clay, wood, bamboo, paper, cloth, stone and even gourd to bring humble utilitarian objects to the level of art. The appeal of these objects to the collector - whether birdcage or basket, box or brushpot, plate or bowl, comb or pipe, shadow puppet or wood block print - transcends simple nostalgia, lying as it does in their intrinsic beauty and vitality as much as in the fact that, transmitted from father to son, the skills with which they have been so finely wrought are in danger of perishing. This lavish collection of photographs, richer and more eclectic in examples than have ever been gathered between the covers of a single book before, celebrates the art of the Chinese craftsman. - - LYNN PAN, who was born in Shanghai, is the author of eight books including Sons of the Yellow Emperor and Tracing It Home. - ISBN 9789627283874 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 247.

About the book >.>.> This is the first serious attempt to examine the erotica of the Qing period and to assess the part it plays within Chinese culture as a whole. At considerable personal risk, John Byron has built up a remarkable private collection of Chinese erotic artefacts in Peking. It consists of snuff, opium and medicine containers made of porcelain, glass, silver, pewter, jade and amber; wood-block prints, porcelain figurines, glass paintings, hand-mirrors and amulets. The pieces, most of which are from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, range from the coy to the thrillingly explicit; all of them demonstrate that beneath the Confucian mask of propriety there lies a healthy hedonism, which is also evident in the traditional Chinese institutions of polygamy, foot binding and elegant courtesans. In his text John Byron traces the history of Chinese erotica from its origins 2,000 years ago to its suppression by the communist regime of the present day, and considers the cultural and sociological significance of each stylistic i.

Cambridge (Mass.) & London; Harvard University Asia Center, 2010. (Harvard-Yenching Institute, Monographs 66). 28,5x22 cm. xxx, (1, 1 blank), 378, (2) s. Illustrated. Publisher's cloth with printed dustjacket. Spine ends are slightly bumped. Name on front paste-down (Karl Steinick). A fine copy. "Liu Yuan?s Lingyan ge, a woodblock-printed book from 1669, re-creates a portrait gallery that memorialized 24 vassals of the early Tang court. Liu accompanied each figure, presented under the guise of a bandit, with a couplet; the poems, written in various scripts, are surrounded by marginal images that allude to a contemporary novel. Religious icons supplement the portrait gallery. Liu?s re-creation is fraught with questions. This study examines the dialogues created among the texts and images in Lingyan ge from multiple perspectives. Analysis of the book?s materialities demonstrates how Lingyan ge embodies, rather than reflects, the historical moment in which it was made. Liu unveiled and even dramatized the interface between manuscript and printed book in Lingyan ge. Authority over the book?s production is negotiated, asserted, overturned, and reinstated. Use of pictures to construct a historical argument intensifies this struggle. Anne Burkus-Chasson argues that despite a general epistemological shift toward visual forms of knowledge in the seventeenth century, looking and reading were still seen as being in conflict. This conflict plays out among the leaves of Liu Yuan?s book." (front flap).

First edition. Octavo. xxxiii, (1), 304pp. Index & bibliography. Pictorial buckram with lilac/gray spine lettered in white. Illustrated with numerous color photos and a map of Singapore. A fine but ex-library copy (with minimal markings; i.e. rubber stamps on title page & bottom of text block). This volume explores the religious transformation of each nation in modern Asia. When the Asian people, who were not only diverse in culture and history, but also active in performing local traditions and religions, experienced a socio-political change under the wave of Western colonialism, the religious climate was also altered from a transnational perspective. Part One explores the nationals of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan, focusing on the manifestations of Japanese religion, Chinese foreign policy, the British educational system in Hong Kong in relation to Tibetan Buddhism, the Korean women of Catholicism, and the Scottish impact in late nineteenth century Korea. Part Two approaches South Asia through the topics of astrology, the works of a Gujar?t? saint, and Himalayan Buddhism. The third part is focused on the conflicts between 'indigenous religions and colonialism,' 'Buddhism and Christianity,' 'Islam and imperialism,' and 'Hinduism and Christianity' in Southeast Asia. Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [8], 138, [2] pages. Text included English and Chinese languages. Illustrations (some in color). Glossary. Reference Works. Bibliography. Introduction by Paul Michael Taylor. The cover has some wear and soiling. Back in 1979, diplomats serving at the U.S. Embassy in Taiwan witnessed how members of the Marine Security Guard lowered the U. S. flag for the last time on New Year's Eve, before the embassy ceased operations. The next day, the United States transferred its recognition as the seat of the Chinese government from Taipei to Beijing. The embassy would be replaced by a newly established nonprofit called the American Institute in Taiwan. Neal Donnelly, the embassy's public affairs officer, argued that high attention back home warranted a public ceremony and media coverage when the U.S. flag came down its pole in front of the chancery, but Ambassador Leonard Unger preferred a private ceremony for the embassy staff. Unger even sent Donnelly to kick out the only American reporter who had snuck onto the compound in a Chinese diplomat's car, but the journalist refused to leave. Despite its unusual status as a "nonprofit, private corporation," the American Institute in Taiwan has functioned as a de facto embassy ever since. The main difference is that it's headed not by an ambassador but a director. Donnelly held that position briefly in an acting capacity in late 1980. Dr. Taylor was a Research anthropologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History; Curator of Asian, European, and Middle Eastern Ethnology; and director of that museum's Asian Cultural History Program. Introduction [to] "A Journey through Chinese Hell: Hell Scrolls of Taiwan" (by) Neal Donnelly. (Introductory essay in English & Chinese: pp. 2-5.) Donnelly's "A Journey through Chinese Hell," accompanying the exhibition of the same name, has allowed every reader to undertake a delightful, colorful journey through traditional Chinese folkways, morality, high ethics, guilt, meritmaking, and religion. Its most basic and lasting contribution is that it illustrates two rare and beautiful sets of scrolls, which Donnelly collected while serving as an American foreign service officer in the Republic of China, and which he has generously donated to the Smithsonian Institution. Each series of ten scrolls depicts the ten stages or "Courts," each ruled by a King, in which the souls of the deceased atone for transgressions during life, then pass on to reincarnation. Such scrolls were used in protracted funeral ceremonies to chart the soul of the deceased through its hellish journey, thus reassuring anxious relatives when the shade had cleared the tenth and final court. Hell is presented in attention-arresting fashion. The punishments shown for each kind of sin truly are an almost delightful guide through traditional Chinese ideas of morality and its opposite. Hell Scrolls, a popular art form sometimes disdained by Chinese intellectuals and rarely preserved after their use, are now valuable historic artifacts and records of folk art and religion. Their graphic depiction of tortures appropriate to each transgression, accompanied in these scrolls by over five hundred inscriptions identifying the specific sin for which each punishment is being given, constitute a remarkable record of traditional Chinese moral standards and a rare example of literature for the illiterate. From a exhibition review: "When I first saw these, I thought this was a wonderful introduction to an entire moral and ethical system, succinctly and visually beautifully summarizing a complete folk system," recalled show curator Paul Michael Taylor. "It was like reading Dante when I was studying medieval and Renaissance literature in Padua. Only now I was in 'Asian Ethnology.' " Taylor heads that program at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, where the Hell Scrolls were first shown. No complete set of such scrolls had ever been exhibited in the United States; one of the sets is the oldest known example of the genre. The Ho Scrolls, named for painter Ho Hsin-yen, date to the early 20th century and are brightly colored. The Hsin Chu Scrolls may be as old as the mid-17th century or as recent as the mid-19th century, and, said Taylor, "have a very subdued color scheme, but stay with you longer.".

Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden (?????, Jieziyuan Huazhuan), sometimes known as Jieziyuan Huapu (?????), is a printed manual of Chinese painting compiled during the early-Qing Dynasty. Many renowned later Chinese painters, like Qi Baishi, began their drawing lessons with the manual. The work was commissioned by Shen Xinyou (???), whose mansion in Lanxi, Zhejiang province was known as Jieziyuan, or Mustard Seed Garden. Shen possessed the teaching materials of Li Liufang (???), a painter of the late-Ming dynasty, and commissioned Wang Gai [zh](??), Wang Shi (??), Wang Nie [zh] (??), and Zhu Sheng (??) to edit and expand those materials with the aim of producing a manual for landscape painting. The result was the first part of Jieziyuan Huazhuan, published in 1679, in five colours. It comprises five juan (?) or fascicles. Li Yu, as the publisher, wrote a preface for this part. The first fascicle deals with the general principles of landscape painting, the second the painting of trees, the third that of hills and stones, the fourth that of people and houses, and the fifth comprises the selected works of great landscape painters. This substantial book set represents an exceptionally important publication in the history of both Chinese and Japanese art. They are a Japanese Edo Period printing of The Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual, known as Jieziyuan huazhuan in Chinese and Kaishien gaden in Japanese. The manual made its way over to Japan in the early Edo Period, where woodblock printed copies became relatively easily accessible in all the major cities and becoming a crucial part of the training of many Edo Period artists. Over the centuries, the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual has become one of the most influential art publications in both China and Japan. The Mustard Seed Garden Manual came to be used by Japanese nanga (bunjinga) artists and was an important element in the training of nanga artists and the development of nanga painting. "The Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual", the first collection has 5 volumes (A Brief Introduction to Qingzaitang Painting, A Manual of Trees, A Manual of Mountains and Rocks, A Manual of Figures and Buildings, and A Manual of Imitating Various Artists' Paintings); ---- the second collection consists of 4 manuals on orchids, bamboo, plum blossoms, an.

8vo; folding wood-block map; modern half-calf binding with gilt title to spine, small holes and old tape repair to title and p.1, old ink notes to p.57; lacking 2 ll (pp. 79-82); staining to some pages; text in English, Chinese and occasional Hebrew; xii, 78 pp. A very scarce work, with an Introduction by the Right Revd. George Smith, D.D. Lord Bishop of Victoria (Hong Kong), which sketches out Western knowledge of the Chinese Jews, whose presence was first noted by Matteo Ricci. In 1850 two Chinese Christians travelled to K'ae-Fung-Foo following an appeal to the British Consul at Amoy and found the small Jewish community in very impoverished circumstances. There had been no Rabbi in the community for fifty years, and their understanding of Hebrew had been lost: 'During the past 40 or 50 years our religion has been but imperfectly transmitted, and although its religious writings still exists, there is none who understands as much as one word of them. It has been our desire to repair the synagogue, and again to procure ministers to serve in it; but poverty prevented us'. It was assumed that this Jewish community originated in Persia in the tenth century, and on a second journey the Hebrew manuscripts from the synagogue, which was built in 1163, were purchased and brought to W.H. Medhurst in Shanghai. Some of the manuscripts were to sent to the London Society for Promoting Christianity Among Jews, whilst several of the manuscripts were given to the Canton office of Sassoon & Co. and remained in the celebrated Sassoon Collection for decades. Two other manuscripts ended up in the collection of the Hebrew Union College in Cinncinati. For further information see J. Preuss, The Chinese Jews of Kaifeng-Fu, Tel Aviv, 1961.

Hardcover. Zustand: vg+ to near fine. First edition. Folio. Unpaginated. 100 plates. Full period brown leather boards with blind-stamped decorative ruling and tooling, as well as gilt lettering on the front cover. Raised bands on the spine, with gilt lettering and tooling. Gilt edges of book block. Dentelles. Lustrous white endpapers. This beautifully bound book serves as visual documentation of artwork and crafts shown at the American Exhibition of the Products, Arts and Manufactures of Foreign Nations (aka the "Boston Foreign Exhibition"). The event was international exposition held at the Mechanics Hall in Boston, from September 3, 1883 - January 12, 1884. It featured the largest number of foreign exhibitors at any major exposition until that point, and notably included exhibitors from China and Japan. There are a total of 100 plates: 97 are finely printed b/w collotype reproductions after original paintings, sculptures and decorative art pieces. 3 plates are chromolithographs: One shows a rug from Dagestan, one displays an antique church vestment, and the third is a glass vase created by the Count Harrach Glassworks of Bohemia. The most represented countries among the pieces shown here are Italy (45 plates) and France (16 plates) respectively. There are 11 plates from Germany, 7 from Austria, 5 from Japan, and 4 from England. The remaining 12 plates contain work from Spain, Russia, Denmark, Sweden and Turkey among others. The selections included works from artists such as Albert Moore (1841 -1893), Raffaello Sorbi (1844 -1931), Pietro Lazzarini (1842 -1918), Otto Grundmann (1844 -1890), Louis Émile Benassit (1833 -1902), Paul Merwart (1855 -1902), Oreste Costa (1851 -1901), Donato Barcaglia (1849 -1930), Nazzareno Cipriani (1843 -1925), Georges Jean-Marie Haquette (1854 -1906), Francesco Vinea (1845 -1902), Carl Schweninger the Younger (1854 -1912), Annibale Gatti (1828 -1909), John Lewis Brown (1829 -1890), Salvatore Albano (1841 -1903), Alessandro Milesi (1856 -1945), Arnaldo Tamburini (1843 -1901), Luigi Mion (1843 -1920), Karl Rettich (1841 -1904), Achille Glisenti (1848 -1906), Hugo Salmson (1843 -1894), Pietro Gabrini (1856 -1926), Stefano Bruzzi (1835 -1911), Willhelm Nabert (1830 -1904), Tito Conti (1842 -1924), and Antonio Frilli (1860 -1902), among many others. Generally the works are roughly contemporary with the period of the exhibition although there a few older works such as those by Corregio and Teniers. In addition to the many works by individually named artists, the book includes decorative art, textiles and/or furnishings created by a number of acclaimed companies or manufacturers, including Limoges porcelain from Haviland & Co., a Pre-Raphaelite tapestry by Morris & Co. (England), ceramics from P. Ipsens Enke (Denmark), an elaborately carved wood fireplace from George Trollope and Sons (England), and Japanese art and handcrafts (including metalwork and ceramics) exported by the pioneering company Kiriu Kosho Kaisha (??????, 1873-1891). Each plate is printed on heavy stock paper, and is preceded by a page of text description and protected by a captioned tissue guard stating the name of the piece and artist. A table of contents at the front of the book lists each plate in order, with the name of the piece, artist, type of artwork, and country origin stated. Binding with minor rubbing to extremities. Covers with some minor scratches and smudges. Minor smudges to the interior covers, endpapers and a few sporadic instances on some of the text pages. Light age toning to text pages throughout. Image plate all clean and vibrant. Binding in very good+, interior in near fine condition overall. Extremely scarce. The work is quite scarce, with only three holdings worldwide on OCLC. Around this time the publisher James R. Osgood went bankrupt, and itis not known how many copies were printed. In 1883, at the outset of the exhibition a different 448 page text catalog was published by G. Coolidge for the show, titled "Official Catalogue Foreign Exhibition, Boston, 1883".

Softcover. Zustand: Near fine. Katsushika, Hokusai [illustrated by] (illustrator). A complete twenty volume set of the Ming dynasty text `Xi Han Tong Su Yan Yi`, heavily illustrated by Hokusai and translated into Japanese. `Xi Han Tong Su Yan Yi` was a work about the Chu_Han Contention (206_202 BC), a bloody civil war that occurred in the aftermath of the collapse of the Qin dynasty. In this translation of the Chinese text Hokusai depicts the war in bloody battle scenes dynamic with movement along with landscapes, dragons, giant snakes, beautiful women, court rituals, and so on. Some scholars believe that, as Hokusai was in his eighties at the time of publication, some (or all) of the illustrations may have been painted by his daughter, Ei, a renowned artist in her own right. While the title of this work reads `Re-carved and Corrected edition` (`Teisei Hokoku`), this is actually the first edition with illustrations by Hokusai (an earlier work with the same title was published in 1787 with illustrations by Kitao Masayoshi). Complete in two parts, with ten volumes to each part. A rare complete set of this work on the most famous war in China`s history, illustrated by Japan`s most renowned artist. Original Japanese wrappers, very lightly worn, with original title slips. Slight scrape to text-block head of v.1-7. Occasional small marks and stains to text. Foxing to leaves 8 and 9 of volume 1, otherwise near fine. 20 v., complete. First part (in ten v.): 2, 9, 27, 26, 20, 21, 20, 19, 20, 22, 21, 21 leaves.
