In den WarenkorbFIRST BRITISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. xxii, 304, [1]. Original brown boards, spine lettered in silver on a red ground, top edge red, dustjacket printed in orange, yellow, and black. Some spotting, particularly to title-page. Dustjacket sunned (especially spine) and soiled with small tears to top. First serialised in The New Yorker throughout June of 1962, ?Silent Spring? is one of the most influential books in the environmental movement, named one of the 25 greatest science books of all time by Discover magazine. Carson first began investigating the use and dangers of pesticides in 1957, though she had harboured concerns since noticing the widespread use of chemical agents during WWII. The book originally began as a collaboration between Carson and journalist Edwin Diamond (the science editor at Newsweek at the time), with Carson planing to contribute the introduction and conclusion. But as she took on extensive correspondence with, as biographer Linda Lear stated in the Environmental History Review, ?every independent scientist who knew something about pesticides and every government scientist who was brave enough to answer her letters?, the project be came her own. Notably, Diamond became one of the quickest and harshest critics upon the book?s release, indicting Carson as ?emotional? and ?alarmist?, and arguing that the book only gained success due to timing (following a recall of all cranberry products due to a herbicide as well as thousands of deaths and birth defects caused by thalidomide) and a leg up from the serialisation in The New Yorker. Extensive scholarship has since characterised the backlash as sexist and financially motivated, which included attacks from DuPont, a major manufacturer of DDT. As a response, JFK ordered an investigation on the science behind Silent Spring, with a full report published in May of 1963, defending the validity of Carson?s arguments and leading to stricter regulations on the use of pesticides. Few books can be so easily traced as a direct agent of change, with David Attenborough reportedly describing Silent Spring as ?the book which has most profoundly shaped the scientific world other than On the Origin of Species? (Economist, 27 September, 2022).

Miss Carson, with the fervor of an Ezekiel, is trying to save nature and mankind" (The New York Times). In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, of Carson's indictment of the pesticide industry; it was of enormous consequence to the grassroots environmental movement, the deep ecology movement, and the rise of ecofeminism. Carson, a nature writer and editor-in-chief for the Fish and Wildlife Service, had long been concerned about the widespread use of DDT and other pesticides, but lack of interest from magazine publishers led her to put aside her idea for an exposé. When the book finally appeared in 1962, only a year before her death, its great strength was not in presenting new information - most of the data she included was already known to the scientific community - but in making the information accessible to non-scientists and instilling a sense of fear and urgency in the public. Not merely an indictment of DDT, her book challenged the very foundations of post-war modernity and forced humans to reconsider their relationship to the world around them. Octavo. Title-page vignette, line-drawn chapter headings. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, green vertical wavy-patterned endpapers, top edge yellow. With dust jacket. Wear to corners and spine ends, cloth and contents clean; jacket unclipped, creasing to extremities resulting in chips and short closed tears, including to centre of spine panel, the same lightly faded: a very good copy in like jacket.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing of Rachel Carson's extremely influential work, which is credited with creating a worldwide awareness of the dangers of man-made environmental pollution. An important and fantastic association copy, signed and inscribed by Carson on the half title page dated one week before publication, "For Alfred Eisenstaedt, a fellow naturalist, with the wish that your assignments may take you always to the earth's most beautiful spots. [signed] Rachel Carson September 20, 1962." Eisenstaedt was an extremely influential photographer who often has been called the "Father of Photojournalism." He photographed Carlson several times, taking one of what has now become the most iconic and famous images of her. He was so invested in her work as a naturalist that even some 16 years after her death he helped produce a limited edition of The Sea Around Us which was illustrated with his photographs and published by The Limited Editions Club in 1980. Eisenstaedt was a German-born American photographer who achieved prominence working as a staff photographer for Life magazine, which featured more than 90 of his pictures on its covers, and published more than 2,500 of his photo stories. Among his most famous cover photographs was "V-J Day in Times Square," taken during the V-J Day celebration in New York City, showing an American sailor kissing a nurse in a "dancelike dip" which "summed up the euphoria many Americans felt as the war came to a close." Bound in publisher's original dark green cloth with gilt stamping to spine and front cover. Near Fine with slight wear to cloth at extremities, pages tanned and several with browning from formerly laid in clippings, and two tiny holes to the front free endpaper. "'Farewell Silent Spring' tells the story of how, in the course of 50+ years of dedicated R&D [research and development], highly toxic broad-spectrum pesticides were removed from the pipfruit orchards of New Zealand. It shows how spraying by calendar, regardless of need, has been replaced by pest monitoring, biological control, and sophisticated techniques like mating disruption and selective chemicals that are toxic to pests and safe to beneficial spsecies. Integrated fruit production, and then Apple Futures, as the new programme became known, is shown to be on a par with organic production in terms of biodiversity and safety to the enivronment and human health, while maintaining the premium fruit quality required by export markets. New Zealand apple growers can say farewell to the 'Silent Spring' predicted by Rachel Carson in her landmark book of 1962." - from blurb on rear cover.

Illustrated endpapers with drawings by Katherine L. Howe. A better than very good copy, the binding firm, the extremities with a little light bumping and wear. The very lightly toned contents, with a previous owner's inscription to the blank reverse of the frontispiece as well as Carson's signature to the title page, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and creased original dustwrapper that has a number of short closed tears to the edges. Signed by Rachel Carson in blue ink on the title page. A poetically written and scientifically scrupulous book on the life history of the sea, ranging from the formation of the oceans to modern discoveries of deep-sea life. Carson's second book, winner of the National Book Award in 1952, and the volume that solidified her success as a writer. Carson's 1962 book 'Silent Spring' described the devastating effects of pesticides on the ecosystem and is credited by many for instigating the environmental movement that resulted in the banning of DDT in the USA. This example is a later [second?] printing of the first edition; the book correctly dated 1951 to the bottom of the title page but the boards glossy rather than matt. The dustwrapper has two reviews to the bottom and three bars to the top of the front flap. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. "In 1878 Wallace published with Macmillan a scientific ode to the living world: 'Tropical Nature and Other Essays.' It anticipates a concern for the environment that would not fully emerge until the twentieth century. No one in English science at the time - and certainly no one of Wallace's stature - showed much interest in the ecological consequences of human encroachment on the natural world. 'Tropical Nature' is the spiritual forerunner of Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring' [. . .] Its main thrust, however, was to provide a detailed response to Darwin's theory of the origin and purpose of coloration in the higher animals. If Wallace's message about the destruction of the environment was lost, it was because he distracted his critics with other issues - in particular, his endless battle with Darwin over the importance of sexual selection." - Ross A. Slotten, "The Heretic in Darwin's Court : The Life of Alfred Russel Wallace" NY: Columbia University Press, 2004, p. 352.

The late author's reflections transcend the mere genre of the environmental essay; the individual pieces form part of a fully realized whole that defined a whole new style of environmental and wilderness writing, inspiring new generations of writers (Barry Lopez and Terry Tempest Williams come to mind) while becoming the author's best known and best loved work in the process, and yes, becoming what Abbey always feared, "a classic".
