In den WarenkorbZustand: FINE. First US printing. Continues his autobiography from 1959, when he returned to England from Malaya to a diagnosis that he had only a year to live to 1982, the centenary of James Joyce's birth. "He turned himself into a "busy hack" to earn royalties for his wife Lynne, whose suicide attempt and subsequent death from alcoholic cirrhosis left him with deep-seated guilt. His hectic writing life, 'an agony mitigated by drink,' was uplifted in 1968 when he married his Italian mistress Liana Macellari, who had borne him a son five years earlier. With disarming candor and coruscating wit, the prolific novelist-critic discusses his distaste for the Beatles and the swinging '60s, the writing and filming of A Clockwork Orange, his peripatetic existence from Singapore to Manhattan, the ordeal of teaching and a roller-coaster career. . a joy to read." In den WarenkorbZustand: Sehr gut. Deutsche Erstausgabe. 477 (3) Seiten. 18 cm. Umschlaggestaltung: Atelier Ingrid Schütz. Sehr guter Zustand. Stempel auf dem Fußschnitt. - John Anthony Burgess Wilson (* 25. Februar 1917 in Manchester, 25. Teil seiner 1990 veröffentlichten Autobiographie "You ve had your time" schrieb, war er nicht sonderlich überrascht, dass er ihn nicht bekam: It was evident for me, anyway, that my novel was no Booker material. It was hard reading for the jurors, and it smelt of the wrong properties, one of which was Catholic Europe".

"Blue Movie is a satirical novel by Terry Southern about the making of a high-budget pornographic film featuring major movie stars. It was published in 1970. According to author Stephen Thrower in his book Nightmare USA, Stanley Kubrick considered adapting it for film, but the project never materialized. Thrower speculates that the film-within-the-film Alex is forced to watch in Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (film) is the closest we'll come to a visualization of collaboration." (Wiki). In den WarenkorbFirst printing of the first Ben Jones illustrated Folio edition. Publisher's original black snakeskin textured boards blocked in iridescent brown to the upper board and spine, in the black card slipcase. Illustrated throughout with a frontispiece and six full page colour plates after paintings by Ben Jones. With an introduction by Irvine Welsh. A fine, as new copy. Burgess regularly expressed frustration at the disproportionate attention garnered by 'A Clockwork Orange'. The novel, he later recalled, "fell into a great silence, as many books do" following its publication in 1962, "but then a film was made of it ten years later, and [.] my trouble began". The film, of course, was Stanley Kubrick's infamous 1971 adaptation starring Malcolm McDowell as Alex (Andy Warhol had earlier adapted the book for his film 'Vinyl' in 1965), and the "trouble" was being "accused of fomenting violence, rape, mayhem, as it were, because of this film and because of the book it was based on". Burgess was ambivalent about the very aspects of the book that made it famous. "It was certainly no pleasure to me to describe acts of violence" he recalled in 1972, later expressing the more nuanced view that "I was sickened by my own excitement at setting it down". It is the book's language, however, that makes it so extraordinary, "nadsat", the vivid Anglo-American-Slavic language used by its characters generating its remarkable energy (and indeed violence). Burgess began writing the book upon his return to Britain from Malaya and Brunei in 1960 (he was an education officer for the Colonial Service) and it also reflects the author's reaction to a pop and youth culture (including violent clashes between Mods and Rockers) that he was experiencing for the first time after being away for six years. Near fine condition. First edition by Folio Society of Burgess's iconic, dystopian satirical black comedy. As the publisher's blurb (page i) of the 1962 first edition states: "A Clockwork Orange is the scarifying autobiographical confession of Alex, a juvenile delinquent of the unspecified but not very distant future, who tells the tale of his own criminal excesses and his 're-education' in the peculiar slang of his generation' [. . .] As the genial Alex himself might put it: 'It is a horrorshow story, which will either make you smeck like bezoomny or bring the old tear to your glazzies.'" "A Clockwork Orange" was famously filmed by Stanley Kubrick; both book and film are cult classics, while the book is often considered one of the most important (and influential) novels of the twentieth century.

A Clockwork Orange is a nightmare vision of the future told in its own fantastically inventive lexicon, it has since become a classic of modern literature. Roald Dahl hailed it âA terrifying and marvelous book.â Inspired in part by an attack on Burgessâ pregnant wife, Burgessâ most famous novel is a âcompelling and often comic vision of the way violence comes to dominate the mindâ (Clute & Nicholls, 175). âThe most discussed aspect of this book is the slang Burgess created for his teenaged characters. Called ânadsat,â it combines Cockney slang with Russian⦠A Clockwork Orange serves as a forum for the discussion of the nature of language and the conflicts between free will and determinismâ (New York Public Library, Books of the Century, 164). The cinematic adaptation of Burgessâs haunting tale was accidental. Screenplay writer Terry Southern gave Stanley Kubrick a copy of the novel, but, as he was developing a Napoleon Bonaparteâ"related project, Kubrick put it aside. Soon afterward, however, the Bonaparte project was canceled and, sometime later, Kubrick happened upon the novel. It had an immediate impact. Of his enthusiasm for it, Kubrick said, âI was excited by everything about it: The plot, the ideas, the characters, and, of course, the language. The story functions, of course, on several levels: Political, sociological, philosophical, and, whatâs most important, on a dreamlike psychological-symbolic levelâ. Kubrick wrote a screenplay faithful to the novel, saying, âI think whatever Burgess had to say about the story was said in the book, but I did invent a few useful narrative ideas and reshape some of the scenes.â The film premiered in 1971 starring Malcolm McDowell with a memorable soundtrack composed by Walter Carlos. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century and by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-languange novels since 1923.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression, first issue binding and first issue dust-jacket; 8vo; page stock mildly toned as always, light spotting to prelims and margins, else unmarked internally; publisher's black boards, titles to spine gilt, with the original unclipped pictorial dust-jacket designed by Barry Trengrove priced 16s, typical sunning to spine, minor edge-wear, else a very sharp copy. Three issues exist: two in black boards - the first priced 16s, the second priced 18s; thirdly, in the late '60s the last copies were issued in purple boards with a decimal price sticker. The present copy has all the requisite first issue points. Burgess' best known book and although he was of the opinion that Earthly Powers was his masterpiece, like many authors on the matter he was wrong. Clockwork Orange is far, far more than the source book for a great film, it remains a tremendous work in its own right.
