Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. My Family and Other Animals is the bewitching account of a rare and magical childhood on the island of Corfu by treasured British conservationist Gerald Durrell, beautifully repackaged as part of the Penguin Essentials range. 'What we all need,' said Larry, 'is sunshine.a country where we can grow.' 'Yes, dear, that would be nice,' agreed Mother, not really listening. 'I had a letter from George this morning - he says Corfu's wonderful. Why don't we pack up and go to Greece?' 'Very well, dear, if you like,' said Mother unguardedly. Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family - acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long-suffering mother and Roger the dog - take off for the island of Corfu. But the Durrells find that, reluctantly, they must share their various villas with a menagerie of local fauna - among them scorpions, geckos, toads, bats and butterflies. Recounted with immense humour and charm My Family and Other Animals is a wonderful account of a rare, magical childhood. 'Durrell has an uncanny knack of discovering human as well as animal eccentricities' Sunday Telegraph 'A bewitching book' Sunday Times Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India, in 1925. He returned to England in 1928 before settling on the island of Corfu with his family. In 1945 he joined the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper, and in 1947 he led his first animal-collecting expedition to the Cameroons. He later undertook numerous further expeditions, visiting Paraguay, Argentina, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Mauritius, Assam and Madagascar. His first television programme, Two in the Bush which documented his travels to New Zealand, Australia and Malaya was made in 1962; he went on to make seventy programmes about his trips around the world. In 1959 he founded the Jersey Zoological Park, and in 1964 he founded the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. He was awarded the OBE in 1982. Encouraged to write about his life's work by his brother, Durrell published his first book, The Overloaded Ark, in 1953. It soon became a bestseller and he went on to write thirty-six other titles, including My Family and Other Animals, The Bafut Beagles, Encounters with Animals, The Drunken Forest, A Zoo in My Luggage, The Whispering Land, Menagerie Manor, The Amateur Naturalist and The Aye-Aye and I. Gerald Durrell died in 1995. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Sprache: Deutsch Broschur 4;; 449 Seiten + 61 Seiten Anhang; Bibliotheksstempel auf Rückseite Haupttitel, sonst wohlerhaltenes Buch; Tabellen; - The African Development Report 1995 is the seventh in an annual series, covering recent economic developments in Africa; an in-depth analysis of a major development policy issue of critical importance to Africa; and updated statistical information on the African economies. Part I of the Report contains four chapters and is devoted to a survey of the global economy in 1994; the performance of African economies; the major domestic policy developments during 1994; and the medium-term outlook and prospects for the African economies. Chapter 1 reviews the most recent trends of the global economy, the dominant features of which in 1994 were the relatively high output growth rates achieved by most of the industrialized and a few developing countries; the surge in the volume of world trade; and the success recorded in controlling inflationary pressures. The second chapter highlights the performance of African economies in 1994, with special emphasis on the analyses of output growth, regional patterns of growth, sectoral performance, inflation, the balance of payments, external debt, and employment; and reviews the major macroeconomic developments in the region. It also presents a survey of internal conflicts and their costs to African development; and economic profiles of a few selected countries -- Botswana, Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia. In Chapter 3, a comprehensive analysis of the major domestic policy developments in 1994 is presented. It examines fiscal policy developments, public sector reforms and privatization; monetary and financial policy developments; and exchange rate and trade policy developments. It also examines the question of Central Bank autonomy from the Treasury in Uganda; and recent measures adopted by Kenya in pursuit of greater convertibility of its currency. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the medium-term outlook for Africa, taking in.

Zustand: very good. Chicago : University of Chicago Press, 2009. Paperback. 304 pp.- Despite being told that we now live in a cosmopolitan world, more and more people have begun to assert their identities in ways that are deeply rooted in the local. These claims of autochthony-meaning "born from the soil"-seek to establish an irrefutable, primordial right to belong and are often employed in politically charged attempts to exclude outsiders. In The Perils of Belonging, Peter Geschiere traces the concept of autochthony back to the classical period and incisively explores the idea in two very different contexts: Cameroon and the Netherlands. In both countries, the momentous economic and political changes following the end of the cold war fostered anxiety over migration. For Cameroonians, the question of who belongs where rises to the fore in political struggles between different tribes, while the Dutch invoke autochthony in fierce debates over the integration of immigrants. This fascinating comparative perspective allows Geschiere to examine the emotional appeal of autochthony-as well as its dubious historical basis-and to shed light on a range of important issues, such as multiculturalism, national citizenship, and migration. • Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: none, University of Sussex (Institute of Development Studies), language: English, abstract: This paper makes a brief introduction of the human rights movement, its evolution from the US and French revolution to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Vienna Conference, and to present day practice of the Rights-Based Approach (a citizen-centered approach). In the following pages, the paper critically explores the newly conceived approach of human rights: the rights-based or citizen-centered approach. The Human Rights-Based Approach (RBA) places or sees human rights as an integral component of all human development programming, be it at the local or international level. The paper go along to identify the practicality and added value in the application of the RBA. In particular it looks at some of the strengths (community empowerment, local ownership, inclusion, etc) of the RBA, how that makes the RBA different from other development concepts. According to the paper translating this complex approach into practice is a big challenge to development experts, agencies and international organizations involving tensions and contradictions. Using the Chad-Cameroon Pipeline Project as a case study the paper brings to light some of the limitations of the RBA in today's highly politics-driven world. It reveals how some other materialistic accomplishments can be placed high above citizens' freedom and at the expense of the environment on which they depend on for their survival.

  • Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: A, University of Ibadan, language: English, abstract: The institution responsible for electoral management is called electoral management body. They are solely responsible for organising an election with the assistance of other government bodies, most importantly, the Police. This paper aimed at making a comparative analysis of the different systems (Nigeria and Cameroon) of election management through institutions called Electoral Commissions. A qualitative study, data were sourced from secondary sources. The study tried to identify some trends. In the word of Fukuyama (1992), democracy is the 'endpoint of man's ideological evolution'. At the end of Cold War, the world saw transition of hitherto authoritarian military/ monarchical states to democracy. Between 1990 and 1994, about thirty of one forty-one African states that had not held multiple party elections did so. Eligible citizens expressed their right to air their opinion through voting on who they so desire to govern them. It is not only in national elections that voting has a special importance, but also in many institutions, private and public domains. As experience has shown so far in many of these countries, elections become not day activity, rather they are complex set of activities with different variables that act and feed on one another.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, grade: 1,0, Ewha Womans University, language: English, abstract: In this paper, we will focus on breast ¿ironing¿ in Cameroon. After brief information about the country, we will discuss the methods and the consequences of this practice. Subsequently, we will talk about the international and national policy and legal framework to finally see what is done to stop the further practice of breast ¿ironing¿. Violence against women is still a serious issue all around the world. Although the perpetrators are mostly men, there are also cases where the offenders are female. This is the case in some Western and Central African countries like in Chad, Benin, Guinea-Bissau, Guina-Conakry, Togo, Côte d¿Ivoire, Kenya and Zimbabwe and mostly in Cameroon (Tapscott, 2012), where women do harm to their daughters in the form of breast ¿ironing¿. This method consists of massaging, pressing or pounding the breasts flat with different objects like hot stones. The victims are mostly between eight and 12 years old (Tapscott, 2012) when their breasts begin to grow. The reason behind this practice is to prevent the young women to look feminine as long as possible to protect them from teenage pregnancies. Latter would mean no fully completed education and a social exclusion.

  • Originalbroschur. Zustand: Sehr gut. XIX, 268 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - This book in a diagnostic approach looks at the problems plaguing Africa, a continent rich in human and natural resources yet the poorest in the world. The main question is: what is the purpose of government in Africa? As illustrated by different empirical examples, the study argues that the creation of states and governments after colonialism was a «false start» and was not impacted by the social contract principle of men forming government to preserve the common good. The result is a leadership culture of government against the people with weak institutions in favour of strong autocratic rulers. The core of this study is a solution seeking approach with alternative political forms. ISBN 9783631629338 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 383.

Map : 'Westafrikanische Kolonialkarten'. (West African colonies.) This map shows several colonies in West Africa. Colour lithograph on a vellin type paper. Rear blank. Print originates from atlas. 100% authentic. Description: This large antique map is taken from; 'Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas in 126 Haupt-Und 139 Nebenkarten', Bielefeld; Leipzig: Velhagen & Klasing 1899. Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas was a major cartographic work published in several German and foreign editions 1881-1937. It was named after Richard Andree (1835-1912) and published by Velhagen & Klasing, Bielefeld and Leipzig, Germany. By using chromolithography, rather than copper plate engraving, but reproducing the maps from zinc plates that were etched in relief (just like letterpress printing), V & K was able to offer detailed maps at a much lower price than competing works, such as the 7th and 8th editions of Stielers Handatlas.Artists and Engravers: Richard Andree (1835 - 1912) was, like his father Karl Andree, a German geographer noted for devoting himself especially to ethnography. His main work, however, is his Allgemeiner Handatlas (Leipzig, first edition 1881, final edition 1937), one of the most comprehensive world atlases of all times. The early editions of the Times Atlas of the World (1895-1900) are based on this atlas, as was Cassell's Universal Atlas.
